  • Enjoy this drive in 4K heading from SR 431 on the south end of Reno to northernmost Carson City. The route takes us south along Old 395 thorough Washoe Valley where to connect up with I580 which takes us along Washoe Lake. After leaving Washoe Valley we drop down into northern Carson City. Thankfully, some wildfire smoke visible when we start in Reno dissipates shortly into the trip.

I used to take the old 395 thru Carson City, down to Gardnerville, quite often when I'd visit my brother at Fitzgerald's in 91-92, who worked at the "Moonlight lounge' of Sister Act (his roommate and one of his customers were extras in the movie).
I loved the drive down the Carson Valley. Scariest thing that ever happened to me was being alone on the 395 one night and encountering a wrong way driver headed north, who missed me by near inches.
I was reminded of the scene with Steve Martin and John Candy in 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' but since there were no cell phones then, I could not alert anyone.
I wonder what the 395 bypass has done to downtown Carson City's business. I wanted to move to Carson City to have an easier commute to my job as Harrah's Tahoe Controller, since I was also the supervisor of the Reno's Harrah's Controller on the non-gaming and entertainment end, but I finally left after my brother's unexpected passing and after just one season driving in blizzards even with the help of studded snow tires so I would not have to chain up.
I always felt the Carson Valley's scenery, especially the Sierra's above Minden/Gardnerville, was as stunning as Jackson Hole Wyoming, because of the vertical difference between the Sierra Crest and valley floor.
My condo bedroom where I rented had a window where I could lie down, listen to music, and look straight at the Sierras from my upstairs perch. I'd watch as the snowstorms would pass over the crest, or summertime thunderstorms knowing we'd get hit within minutes with severe weather.
My carport kept my car clear of snow however, though my reserved parking space on the top of Harrah's garage did not so my hands would go numb trying to clear my windows for the drive home down Kingsbury Grade.
If the weather was whiteout, I took 50 to 395, then 395 south towards my home.

Thank you for posting this personal story! It must have been so different back then. So much more empty that it is now... I wish I could have seen the area then!

@@tonydrives The area was more open, but the trip to Carson City took much longer and because traffic was forced thru its downtown headed further south, the trip to Minden/Gardnerville took longer still.
I remember where the old 395 connected to the freeway into Reno, there was a nearly 360 degree on ramp, which always amused me when I drove on it onto the freeway portion of 395.
The adding of the freeway thru Carson City I feel was responsible for the sad closing of the Ormsby House hotel, where I stayed once when I traveled to see Kenny Loggins in Tahoe. It was cheaper than the hotels in Tahoe, laid back, and had a nice outdoor pool.
But for me my fav hotel in the region was and is the Nugget because of its wonderful indoor pool. Even though I was an accounting manager for Harrah's Tahoe, I'd sneak to the Nugget so I could visit with my brother at Fitzgeralds and so I could swim and relax.
I never gambled much, feeling it a conflict of interest with my job as Harrah's non-gaming and entertainment controller, but we felt at Harrah's it was better to support our competition, like the distant Nugget, to foster tourism region wide.
My brother knew Bill Harrah well, and when he passed away unexpectedly, despite working at Fitzgeralds, my employees at Harrah's came to his funeral to support me, as did my brother's own ex wife who used to be a Harrah's employee.
Back then Harrah's was owned by Bass who I continued to work for after leaving Harrah's as a systems instructor traveling to Holiday Inns world wide, working for Bass, including time spent with Harrah's, for more than four years.
Reno is still one of my favorite places--I and both of my brothers were married there, wanting our spouses to remember the beauty of the place, like Mt. Rose looking over the city, or nearby Pyramid lake in stark desert contrast, or more distant Lake Lahontan where'd I go swimming with my brother.

I would drive that stretch every day in the early 90s. Haven’t been back in many years. I do miss the natural beauty of the area.

I love this ! I lived in SE Reno for ten years by McCarren and Longley and worked at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Before I-580 was finished, I took this original route several times a week. Living in Phoenix now, but loved Reno and Carson. Thanks for the memories .

Old 395 anyday over the lifeless 580...Thanks for the ride and the memories, only thing missing is "The Waver" his name was Ed Carlson and he would walk between Reno and Carson, it seemed daily, when I lived in Reno in the 70's and 80's.

Pretty soon future I-11 will replace I-580, since I-11 will connect from Las Vegas Nevada to Reno Nevada, as well as Las Vegas Nevada to Phoenix Arizona.

Thanks for posting that David, I had no idea. Badly needed as the drive from Vegas to Reno is very dangerous.

You did not change lanes in Pleasanton Valley for the man walking alongside Old 395 & now the bicycle. Man if the cops Ever catch you. You will be in Big Trouble. The cops can site, Give You a whopping Big Ticket or Go To Jail.

You don't have to change lanes if you have to cross into oncoming traffic. Learn the law before you say stupid things. And also it's not Pleasanton Valley.
