Hey dude. I'm considering getting myself a 2023 mx5. I live in Toronto. You think I'll manage the winters in a mx5 as long as I got good winters on? Or buy a suv and forget a sports car? lol
I didn't know that "Miata" was old german for "reward" before I bought my first MX5. Funny, 'cause I bought it as a gift to myself for having quit smoking! Cost of cigarettes and the payments on the car were about the same. Quit smoking and buy an MX5.
Totally understand how you feel ! Took me close to 6 months for mine to arrive ! Horrible buying experience with my dealer , Maple Mazda ! I would NEVER recommend them ! But the car is EXCELLENT ! NO REGRETS !
@@WizardTerence Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your dealer. I guess I was very lucky considering our local dealer had never had a new MX-5 on their lot, never had anyone order one from them and they were just as excited to order one of the limited RF's to be manufactured and shipped to New Zealand. They really made the whole experience one to remember. It was interesting talking to the manager of this dealership where he described how quite often the dealers become complacent about selling cars and forget that often it's quite a big deal for the customer and they have to remind themselves of that. At my dealership however it turned out to be quite a big deal for them to handle this transaction from day one. Hope you have a better experience in the future and do enjoy your car! :^)
I'm not as sold on the base spec. I think it's fine if you just want a convertible to cruise in, but if you do any hard driving at all, the body roll on the base model is just excessive. I also feel like the LSD is a must have. That said, I'm less sold on the additional parts beyond that. I like the look of my BBS wheels & Brembo brakes, but the difference isn't large enough to justify the extra cost. Had I not found a good deal, I would've bought a trim without them. Also, small correction: @4:24 the seats in the model you tested are the normal leather seats (standard in US spec GT, & later US spec Club with BBS/Brembo (non-Recaro) package). The Recaro seats are black Alcantara with leather bolsters.
Having driven both, it all boils down to what someone likes the look of more and how much you know to care for convertible soft tops which can be a lot of work if you don't know what you're doing. Both have the same wind noise on normal days. The only time the RF is louder is on windy days with crosswinds, and its not by much. It seems like much because it becomes surround sounds versus just in the front because of the windshield. In USA at least, the base model RF is a club spec. The more expensive with leather seats and fancy features is GT spec. Softop base spec is Sport which has no LSD, standard brake calipers, and standard struts with cloth seats. If you're looking for a sports car in manual, LSD is a must. If you want an auto cruiser, the base is fine. If you're building a car, a base is fine unless you're okay with the oem upgrades of the club and want to save on a bit of money and time. If you like the safety features included extra of the top trim, then go for that I guess.
The Club with the BBS Package gives you BBS Rims, Brembo Brakes, tuned Billsteins, Recaro Seats (Leather Seats before 2019) and the Aroe Package, but not all of the electronic BS of the GT. It's the best of both worlds, one might say. I like the flip mirror instead of auto dimming: I have light sensitive eyes and I use the flip mirror even in the daytime when I have somebody behind me with super bright lights on.
I'm getting an RF because I live in the northwest; 2024 is likely the last manual available, and I plan to keep it forever. I imagine using it as a daily driver for 5 years, taking it out on sunny days, then pulling the cover off when I'm ready to give it to a future kid. I want the waterproofness, the top-notch brakes, the Recaro seats, and ultimately, something that will wow someone when I awaken it from its slumber. The fastback is the clear winner
Nice, thank you... Oh and thank you also for NOT calling it a MIATA! You see I am American born but have lived in New Zealand for just on 50 years, fell in love with the MX-5 in 89 but only just got a brand new 2021 MX-5 RF limited. They have never been called Miata's here... lol So if I was going to do this I really wanted the 6 gear manual, there were none available in the Machine grey so had to order it. Ordered in September, it was built at the Hiroshima plant on the 9th of December and was on a ship bound for New Zealand in early January, we picked it up ready to drive away on the 15th of January... The whole experience was such a buzz that I want to do it again but yeah, probably a once in a lifetime for this old buzzard but now you have me wanting to experience the Roadster.... ;^) Thanks again Brian. Best wishes, stay safe out there.
Hey mate I'm in nz too, drive a 91NA, looking at getting a ND soon sounds like mazda treated you well and the buyer experience was worth it, enjoy your car. bro...cheers
@@richardflaherty2373 who ever came up with such a silly name? Sound like the name of some weird, strange, alien insect. lol Have a look at even the American imports, the name Miata cannot be found anywhere on the car or documentation. MX-5 Forever mate! hahahaha
Driving my MX5RF all year on snow, if there is any, which is even more fun 🤩 Of course open roof as far as it is not snowing or raining too much. Temperatur is not an issue at all with the great heating and seat heating.
It’s winter and it’s an RF. Why not try it with the top closed. It happens to be pretty quiet and it keeps you snug as a bug. The MX5 is pretty stiff without much noticeable cowl shake. It’s a nice stiff body structure but with the RF if you pay attention the car does stiffen further when the top is closed and that’s a nice thing.
Hey Brian " What do you love " ? Yea its the convertible roadster ! I daily drive a 2016 MX-5 soft top Club down in Illinois with the winter tires on it the car is STILL a blast in snow ! I got the Naughty bits ( Brembo / BBS package ) & I use that limited slip differential constantly in winter. Now tell me I don't need the lighter wheels or the Brembo's ( yes I use the benefits without tracking but don't tell that to the local Police ) ! BTW with the windows up & heater blasting the top comes down often below 32 degrees F. One other thing , during the COVID 19 Pandemic this car has been a total mood changer. Feeling down or just not altogether jump in take a drive ... it cures your mood !
Here in Fairbanks, Alaska winter always comes with a large helping of snow! Come test with us in the Interior where the snow is abundant, the temperatures are frigid, and the people are friendly!
You'll want an lsd and rf if winter driving it. Also, the rf is quieter if doing lots of highway driving. I agree the brake and wheel options i think are a bit pointless unless you like the looks of them and the entry level car is a good value.
Wow, really great review! Loved the video and your voice is very calming. Only 30k subs!? What?! This channel has the same feel and quality as some 500-800k channels. Keep it up!
Sorry man, but I’m on my fourth MX-5 now. I prefer the RF, and it’s got nothin’ to do with security; it’s just real nice having a little coupe most of the time. It just feels quieter and more composed, particularly on long, interstate highway drives. The extra weight? Don’t feel it at all. Buffeting?? Nope. And the best part? With the roof open, it feels every bit like the soft top!
Having owned a 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5, I'm looking to buy the RF. Almost purely because the looks with the roof up is just my cup of tea. It's April, 2024 as I type this and my biggest issue is finding any 2024 vehicles to test drive. I need to know if the RF a) has such visibility issues (blind spots) that it's a deal breaker, b) whether the top-down experience lacks the "full convertible" feel and c) whether the wind buffeting people talk about with the RF at highway speeds is a deal breaker. Just finding one to test drive is difficult!
Great honest review, and well produced video. I hope you gain more subscribers, you deserve it. 1. If you really like the raw experience of feeling the surroundings like wind, noise, temperature change, unobstructed views... the RF is not for you, the RF is like a "targa" 2. Bilsteins, only noticeable on track. 3. Brembos, very useful for spirited canyon driving, zero fade. 4. LSD, makes the car feel different in canyons, maybe is a placebo effect on my mind. Right before Covid I did a 6K miles solo-camping-trip touching all California's National Parks and landmarks driving exclusively on backroads. I couldn't have picked a better car!
Great review Brian. I agree with you on the Roadster as far as the purity of what the MX-5 is supposed to be, but at the end of the day, I still opted for the RF and haven’t so far regretted my decision. In an ideal world, I’d own one of each, but I don’t have the garage space for another one unfortunately. I do think the Club spec is the sweet spot for getting the best bang for the buck. The LSD over the open diff in the base Sport is worth the slight price increase. If I had the option to spec mine like you can in Canada, I would probably opt for the GS-P package you were driving since I would probably take mine to the track or Autocross occasionally.
I share your love of Miatas. I have a 1997 and a 2019. Neither of them have ever been driven in snow. I would love to be driving them now, but I can't bring myself to subjecting them to road salt. Both of mine are soft tops. One advantage to the RF is if you do drive in salt you can go through an automatic car wash. Can't imagine doing that with the cloth top.
I went with the Roadster for all the reasons you mentioned, although I ended up with a 30th Anniversary because it was orange. Manual of course. I don't drive it in the winter so watching your review makes me miss it. lol.
It's definitely a keeper and I have it modified for autocross for even more fun. I'm enjoying your reviews which is saying something because a lot of YT reviewers annoy me. lol.
I have a 2017 RF GT. I didn't even expect I'd like a Miata because I'm not into convertibles. I thought I'd end up getting a Subaru BRZ, or maybe the Nissan 370z. The availability of the RF made the difference. My only disappointment was that it didn't include a LSD. After auto-xing it a few times and general driving fun I found I don't miss it. About the only time it would really made a difference for me is driving in snow. I have a perfectly fine truck with 4wd, so that is a non-issue. My fuel economy is approximately 35mpg. I will be keeping this car for a long time. I'm not tempted to trade for a newer Miata or even for any other car. I have seen a few reviews of the new 2022 Subaru BRZ, so I will have to give that a test when they become available. No, not trading the Miata for it. Gonna do it right and save up the cash for a sizable down payment, and work with my bank to set up the loan ahead of time. This's is I buy it. I have 2 vehicles and only me. A third vehicle may seem excessive. Unfortunately I have a number of other things going on so I may not even get around to taking one for a ride.
"Scuddled" lol. Go figure dead of winter and no snow. Fun review! Like you, I get the why of RF however I'd stick with the pure openness of the roadster...like my nb :)
In Germany the roads are full of salt. My Mx 5 got a wax conservation underneath (sorry if it is not the correct word) but I am still anxious to drive it in such conditions.
@@BrianMakse The car came new from the factory with underbody wax protection. I paid 250€ for extra cavity wax protection from WÜRTH. They spray it everywhere possible with a lance. Dealer says it lasts 10 years but I think I will renew it after 5 if I still have the car.
Danke schoen! I’m going to investigate that process further. We have similar protections here, but I think they are much more toxic for the environment.
@@BrianMakse I think the go-to stuff for this is Mike Sanders or Fluid FIlm. It's just the mechanic at my dealership whom I trust and he assured me that the WÜRTH wax is good enough. I have a beater car for bad weather so the MX 5 will not be that much in the snow for now!
@@Fritttenfrau I use Fluid Film before each winter (except on the exhaust- pee-yoo!), and drive my ND all year round. Did the same to my previously owned NC and never had rust issues from the salty roads of New England.
Brian....when i was a kid, i wanted a motorcycle. heck...i STILL want a motorcycle!!! my mother, a specialty nurse, dragged me to the hospital to see a guy all taped up from an accident. she didn't convince me. so I fell a few times...convincing myself this was not the perfect way to enjoy the road. at least not around places where people are given driving licenses yet cannot drive. as I grew older, I realized I CAN enjoy the motorcycle joy of driving in the wind...the convertible. although today I still remember the odd joy of that massive pontiac Bonneville convertible i drove around in...a smaller rag top is still the motorcycle for people who want to live in wind and sun. and the miata is the modern-day triumph or MG, WITHOUT the constant electrical goblins and gremlins. and the BASE cars are the perfect, everyday motorcycle. and IMO, leave out the electronics that are going to look like cassette and DVD players in the years your car is handed down to another. now, as you get older, the driving of the roadster is more difficult. and twisting my left knee while getting once, I decided to approach 70 was a bad time for roadsters. against your advice, I traded in my GXP for a 2008 135i...and although I am not in the adult go-cart, I can get in and out and carry all my tennis gear every day.
@@BrianMakse yup. did detailed inspection with 2 mechanics, both agreeing a solid car, 67,000, engine and tranny solid and slick clean. as my euro friend said...it's puuuuuurfecrt. The only things I had to do was replace dried rear back and broken front shock, and replaced over-sized wheels with beautifu, CORRECT wheels. and of course, changed oil to my fav and started a point in time for my records.
The options are needed if you want maximum performance. Less body roll on the bilstein suspension versus the cheaper model trim. Better brakes from the Brembo even when driving normally.
I'm gonna get the 2021 grand touring rf in automatic bc i can still use the paddle shifters if I want to go manual ,the new color deep crystal blue with white interior is soo sexy !!
Great review. I live in NH, so we have winter and I daily drive my RF. You seem to be missing the benefit of the RF, you can put the top up, take your coat off and it is nicer than the ST inside. The whole, it turns into a coupe thing with an insulated hard roof and heated mirrors for winter. Just watching you drive made me cold. My RF hasn't had the roof down in months, because I don't lower it below 55-60 degrees. In the summer, it is down most of the time. Personally think the RF looks better too.
Thanks, AP. There are plenty of reasons to enjoy the RF, but it's still not for me! I had the roof down every day during this test, below freezing, whatever. Got lots of smiles and thumbs up!
Very nice channel, my only thing...your kinda drilling the negative points ( abit too much here )..okay okay..we get it already..." you dont like the *RF model, n for us regular daily drivers here, the nice bembro brakes are not needed...again, once or twice👌🏾..but not through the entire segment..to the end🙄.. othere than that GOOD JOB...i still *subscribed n hit the like 👍🏾...loll #keep up the good work
@@BrianMakse Recaro say Recaro on the seat near the head rest. They are suede and leather with bolsters. What you have there is a GT mx5 ( the colour gauge and silver heating control dials give it away as a GT ). That GT is a GT-S because it includes the performance sport package. Those are the leather Mazda seats in red(saddle brown some say) Only the GSP (Canada)/Club (United States ) gets Recaro. The Recaro also gets the upgraded Bose speakers, also marked on Recaro seat with metal badge.
@@BrianMakse your base is ace 2020 mx5 title video also does not have Recaro seats. Those are basic Mazda seats and that car also does not have the sport package . Sport pack includes BBS rims as you know.
Just pointing out that your test car did not have the Recaros...and did you know that the streering wheel now tilts and telescopes? Might alleviate your complaint on steering wheel reach.
Here’s the thing. I can’t keep repeating the same complaints about the ND2, did that in two previous episodes and that’s like beating a dead horse now. I left the Recaro mistake in the episode for fun, but it’s proven to be more of a hassle for what it’s worth.
Is there any chance you can upload videos in 60fps? Your channel is really great, and I think that would just take it up a notch. Some of these awesome camera shots would benefit from it.
@@BrianMakse it's just a lot smoother of an image. When watching on a large display, you can really appreciate the difference. 30 would be nice too. There is just one part in the video where the frame rate seemed to drop a little.
It was 100% 24fps for sure. I generally check every episode on my home theatre with the big 4K screen through the TH-cam player and don’t have any issues. I’ll tell you what. I’m in the middle of a shoot right now and that’s mostly 24, but I’m shooting XC40 Recharge this week and I’ll do that in 30fps exclusively, so you’ll have to let me know what you think!
Great review, thanks! Looking forward for a rel winter review with snow all over the place. I live in Quebec, and looking forward to drive it all year around (if faisable).
Hey Brian, thanks to you and some other great car enthusiast channels, I finally ordered a Miata! Should be coming in a few weeks, but quick question. I ordered the soft top since I value the classic roadster look. How do you think that one would fare in the cold? I assume it would still heat up well enough inside given how small it is lol
Great video. Looking for your opinion. I have a 2002 S2000 that I love. Unfortunately my knee no longer loves clutches. That situation will not be resolved for a few years. So I am looking at the 2021 MX 5 RF automatic. I love the look and gives the option of all year driving. Is there anything else that you would recommend in the same snack bracket ? Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, Bryan. I've not driven any MX-5 automatics, so it's not fair to comment. Give it a try to be sure. For alternative convertibles, I'll suggest the 2-Series, lovely car.
The automatic isn't that bad but like all autos is a bit sluggish on shifting in manual mode. The MX5 has a much bigger comfort level in cabin than the S2k, so you shouldn't have an issue with fitting. My best suggestion, go test drive. If you want a differing var I could suggest the Mercedes SLK, specifically the 2.0T 250 or 300. For a heavy car, its engine and transmission choice pushes its fat and heavy self as quick as the MX5 and S2k with only about 200hp in the 250, and 250 in the 300. The 300 can be tuned to 300hp very quickly and easily making it much faster than the MX5. It's also spacious and luxury comfortable for a roadster, easier to get in and out of. The SLK is now out of production, a mistake by Mercedes surely given it does have a large following, so you'd have to settle for trying to find a last year SLC or a used one. Only other roadsters still made is the Boxster and Z4.
Brian, a very honest drive review as usual 🙂👍. About the wind noise... only with open roof or also when is closed? At which speed you noticed to start the noise? About the seats, any feedback about regular seats compared to the Recaro seats for the daily drive or commute? Thanks again!
Brian, very inspiring and informative commentary! About to order my first MX-5, it will be the 2022, test drove a 2017 yesterday and loved it, reminded me a bit of my 1972 240Z. Can you recommend a winter rim/tire combo that can be purchased in Toronto, or if not T.O then a Canadian retailer? Cheers
Hey Peter, you’re gonna love your ‘22 so moloch more than the ‘17. A little more torque and a big bump in power. Covered all of that in a previous episode. Get a 16” package for sure. I’m current on Conti XTRMs which is a Canadian specific winter tire and I do recommend them. Email me at my first name at my last name dot com if I can help with a reco!
Great Video Brian, looking forward to the proper winter video with snow driving impressions. Also If I was going to get this as a daily do you recommend getting the LSD model or the non-LSD model? does that make a different in winter/snow driving? Secondly should I consider an automatic or manual for daily driving in snow as well. Thanks
Great questions. If you’re dailying in winter conditions, then you’ll want the limited slip. You’ll simply have better traction in those low grip conditions. With the base, open diff, you’ll have one wheel spinning on snow and ice, etc. Manual or auto doesn’t matter in winter, but the car is SO GOOD with the manual, you have to get it!
LSD limited the torque steer possible on slick roads, kept me straight and true. Drove through 3 winters on X-ice winter tires with no issues and was doing circles around SUVs equipped with all seasons. Stay away from studs, you want soft tires in the cold, and with studded tires the rubber is harder (to hold the studs) and most of the time the roads are well plowed, just cold. The MX5 will make you a better driver and as your talent grows, at some point you will wish you had a manual with an LSD. I don't believe the auto is available with an LSD.
Didn't know that. You should see the international make up of the audience on our channel. I only mention Canada because I'm here, but it's surprisingly irrelevant to the larger number of viewers.
funny, i was telling my speedster, high HP relatives the reason I don't like spending money on super high horsepower cars the other day. i explained that in our REAL lives, these cars get to use that power exactly never in real life. we live in civilized speed controlled areas. by the time you gey to second, you at the next light. and the great roads still have 55 and 60 MPH limits. so??? this is why the miata lives. you can get your grins THINKING you are going fast but you are not. you are simply feeling it.
Ha, love this review. @brian I'm with you; I probably wouldn't go for the RF, but it's such a great platform (well, duh). If you had your druthers, which Miata/MX-5 would you have NOS?
I do! I do! And we make them look a million times better on film than they are in real life. We don't have any decent roads with adult speed limits in Ontario, which is why I spend a lot of time on race tracks and in So Cal.
Did not talk about performance with the top up! That is the reason one would purchase one. Maybe quieter on freeway, warmer in winter, cooler in summer, etc. Wake up!
You call it a “cold weather test,” a scenario where the RF would, arguably, be better than the soft top. Yet there’s no snow, no ice, no winter storm, not even some Nor’easter-like gale force winds & rain! (I know, not your fault.) What’s worse, you don’t even drive with the more insulated, more secure (and more quiet) top up! Folks who prefer the RF tend to drive with the cabin closed - turning it into a cozy coupe - more than ST owners, yet there you are with the top down for the entire test! We get it; you like the ST better - if you said it once, you said it half a dozen times. But in this “winter test,” you neglected to drive the RF the way most RF drivers drive it, with the top up. The RF is my fourth MX-5. The three previous Miatas were all soft tops and you know what? For cold weather, for snow, for heavy storms (and for long range interstate travel), the RF is simply… better. Having owned three soft tops over a period of 13 years, I oughta know. This test is tantamount to me taking an RF with the top UP to sunny Santa Monica and bellyaching about how I’m not getting that wonderful, open air, California experience. Honestly, now!
Lol, this not fast thing always gets me. Of course it’s fast. All cars are fast today. All of them. That’s why the average cars are not deemed “fast” in relative terms - I get that. But the way people speak it’s as if they’re not fast *in absolute terms*... did you ever check sports cars a couple of decades ago? They were considered fast and these would smoke them. Not fast! Lol, if you’re Hamilton, you can say that, but I’d like to see the average driver handle the roads at top speed in a roadster like this one. Not fast. Lofl.
@@BrianMakse your “context” actually proves my point. This is not slow. You’re just used to faster cars cause... gasp... you’re a race driver... and you’re being a bit of a w4nker about it too. Did you actually read my message? Read it again. Slowly.
@@BrianMakse or are you suggesting that normal 0-60 times were always below 3 seconds for normal cars? Lol, the Aston Martin DB went as high as 7.2 and only as low as 5.6 seconds, and guess what, it was definitely considered a fast car. The Alfa Romeo Spider from the 2000s did it in 7+ seconds. Both these are relatively new. If you go further back in time you’ll find almost ALL road sports cars with slower speeds. And those too were considered fast. This car is raced but its main market is the average driver and yes, most definitely, for the latter it is a fast car. As all cars are. P.s. this “slow” thing is usually an American thing. From drivers who can’t even handle a manual. Right...
The MX5 has both. They don't alienate customers given they know its half and half in most markets. But android doesn't have wireless support yet given some mistakes made by google with updates.
@@BrianMakse : To further your "studies": The Bilstein dampers are available without having to get the BBS/Brembo package. The LSD is useful for driving on the street (not just the track), especially (and ironically, considering the theme of your review) in winter driving. "All of the weight" of the RF is NOT up high; the motors and mechanism are behind the seats.
We waited until winter to drive the Mazda MX-5 RF and guess what happened? It didn't snow...

Also, small correction: @4:24 the seats in the model you tested are the normal leather seats (standard in US spec GT, & later US spec Club with BBS/Brembo (non-Recaro) package). The Recaro seats are black Alcantara with leather bolsters.
Base is ace!
totally agree.
Upgrade what you want with base model. Most the upgrades the manufacturer puts on the car on garbage.

MeeeAhhhTaaaaaa! Forever!
@@richardflaherty2373 who ever came up with such a silly name? Sound like the name of some weird, strange, alien insect. lol Have a look at even the American imports, the name Miata cannot be found anywhere on the car or documentation. MX-5 Forever mate! hahahaha
Miiiiiaaaaaattttaaaaa
Driving my MX5RF all year on snow, if there is any, which is even more fun 🤩
Of course open roof as far as it is not snowing or raining too much.
Love it!
Here in Fairbanks, Alaska winter always comes with a large helping of snow! Come test with us in the Interior where the snow is abundant, the temperatures are frigid, and the people are friendly!
I've been to Alaska once and it's a lovely place. I'd love to visit again!
You'll want an lsd and rf if winter driving it. Also, the rf is quieter if doing lots of highway driving. I agree the brake and wheel options i think are a bit pointless unless you like the looks of them and the entry level car is a good value.
I can't disagree. Enjoy!
I have winter wheels on mine.. it’s amazing. snowed >6” last night and had no trouble getting to work- didn’t even shovel lol
Nice work! I'm jealous!
Wow, really great review! Loved the video and your voice is very calming.
Only 30k subs!? What?! This channel has the same feel and quality as some 500-800k channels. Keep it up!
Thanks! One thing - we don't buy traffic, so we count on people like you to tell your friends!
Enjoy it! (I’d never buy one.)
The wheels and brakes look amazing together.
Red Brembos always look the business behind forged wheels.
1. If you really like the raw experience of feeling the surroundings like wind, noise, temperature change, unobstructed views... the RF is not for you, the RF is like a "targa"
That sounds like a brilliant drive! I know many of those roads, so colour me jealous!
Oh... you do NOT have the Recaros! These are the standard Mazda seats.
I have a Club with an LSD, because the whole world is my racetrack.
That’s one way to look at it. You’re one of the few who really benefits from the diff.
Glad you enjoyed, Lee. I can’t disagree!
Thanks, Smedley! You’ve got a great garage there! Salt is the enemy...
I went with the Roadster for all the reasons you mentioned, although I ended up with a 30th Anniversary because it was orange. Manual of course. I don't drive it in the winter so watching your review makes me miss it. lol.
Love the colour of the 30th!
It's definitely a keeper and I have it modified for autocross for even more fun. I'm enjoying your reviews which is saying something because a lot of YT reviewers annoy me. lol.
Glad you enjoy what we do! We don’t know what other channels are doing tbh.
It should have a telescoping steering column...and no Aero Package in Cananda?
Definitely telescoping. I've not seen an aero package here. What's that all about?
@@BrianMakse Aero Package has front and rear diffusers, side skirts and spoiler.
Recaros? Where?
Are these not the same seats that were in my last Club tester?
I mean, how worthy is the sound system on the base level miata? Audio quality is the only thing steering me towards a higher trim
None of them are great because the car isn't quiet.
Great review Brian thanks. Would you still use the roadster in winter however?
Yes, absolutely
"Scuddled" lol. Go figure dead of winter and no snow.
Fun review!
Like you, I get the why of RF however I'd stick with the pure openness of the roadster...like my nb
:)
Manual roadster = perfection!
In Germany the roads are full of salt. My Mx 5 got a wax conservation underneath (sorry if it is not the correct word) but I am still anxious to drive it in such conditions.
We have salt here, too. Tell me more about the wax process!
9:00 Regular MX5 good enough
12:00 RF issues
Agreed! Also, I know you approached BMW ownership with eyes wide open!
Difference in braking is incremental. Maximum braking is dependant upon the tire and the one upside to the Brembos was a more positive brake pedal.
I'm gonna get the 2021 grand touring rf in automatic bc i can still use the paddle shifters if I want to go manual ,the new color deep crystal blue with white interior is soo sexy !!
Paddles aren’t the same as three pedals and a shifter.
Nooooooooo! No No No! Perfect gear changes are so satisfying! Gotta heel and toe, do donuts and power slide! Mx5 is easiest car to learn manual.
Nice review! That car has the stock seats, not the recaros. Also the auburn interior is pretty rare
Stock as in Mazda leather. The stock seats are cloth as well.
“No Sport button” Brilliant!
Ha!
Very nice channel, my only thing...your kinda drilling the negative points ( abit too much here )..okay okay..we get it already..." you dont like the *RF model, n for us regular daily drivers here, the nice bembro brakes are not needed...again, once or twice👌🏾..but not through the entire segment..to the end🙄..
othere than that GOOD JOB...i still *subscribed n hit the like 👍🏾...loll #keep up the good work
Appreciate your feedback. Check out some other episodes!
Those are not Recaro seats in that car your driving.
Are those not the same seats as in my last Club test?
@@BrianMakse Recaro say Recaro on the seat near the head rest. They are suede and leather with bolsters. What you have there is a GT mx5 ( the colour gauge and silver heating control dials give it away as a GT ). That GT is a GT-S because it includes the performance sport package. Those are the leather Mazda seats in red(saddle brown some say) Only the GSP (Canada)/Club (United States ) gets Recaro. The Recaro also gets the upgraded Bose speakers, also marked on Recaro seat with metal badge.
I agree, get the soft top for the full experience !
@@BrianMakse send me a link to your last club test . I'll look. If you had a GSP with sport package then it would have had Recaro
I was considering going to 30fps, but I’d like to understand the appeal of 60fps. Why do you like it?

Copy that! I have another episode ready to go, but I’ll work on running that Volvo 30fps episode next Saturday.
Great review, thanks! Looking forward for a rel winter review with snow all over the place. I live in Quebec, and looking forward to drive it all year around (if faisable).
Glad you enjoyed. I'd love to schedule a test in proper winter conditions.
Should be no prb, I drive my rwd car all year round in Montréal.
Did you say 23 mpg? More like 33 mpg!
You're absolutely right. The cabin heats up in no time, don't worry about it!
What is the color of the mx-5?
I'm getting my Mazda miata Saturday
Congrats!
Yup, embarrassingly low speed limits in our province.
It's really sad, particularly every time I return from California.
Brian, a very honest drive review as usual 🙂👍. About the wind noise... only with open roof or also when is closed? At which speed you noticed to start the noise? About the seats, any feedback about regular seats compared to the Recaro seats for the daily drive or commute? Thanks again!
Old message but I noticed it the most at highway speeds (100 to 110 km/hr) with the top up. That being said my base 2005 Toyota Matrix is worse.
@@BrianMakse Would love a recommend, thank you! Emailing you now
Great Video Brian, looking forward to the proper winter video with snow driving impressions.
I'm getting on average 40+MPG with my 2017 RF GT
Drive harder!
Roadster m/t is the to go MX-5 Entertaining content
Glad you enjoyed!
Just so you know every rf in canada has the bilsteins and the lsd. (On manual cars at least)
It's pure joy, Paul!

Ha, love this review. @brian I'm with you; I probably wouldn't go for the RF, but it's such a great platform (well, duh). If you had your druthers, which Miata/MX-5 would you have NOS?
A base ND2 roadster for me! Or a Flyin Miata ND V8 conversion!
you seem to fit well in there how tall would you be if I may ask
5’10”. My kid who is 6’1” or something fits fine as well.
If you were actually driving the car in the snow you would appreciate having power to both rear wheels.
An open diff doesn't mean one-wheel drive!
MX5 Roadster the way to go ...uhmm drive. Most fun car to drive at almost any price
Anyone know where these roads are in Ontario?
I do! I do! And we make them look a million times better on film than they are in real life. We don't have any decent roads with adult speed limits in Ontario, which is why I spend a lot of time on race tracks and in So Cal.
That car does not have Recaros
Did not talk about performance with the top up! That is the reason one would purchase one. Maybe quieter on freeway, warmer in winter, cooler in summer, etc.
Wake up!
Wake up? As a rule, I don't drive convertibles with the top up.
No it doesn’t but it sure seems that way.
lmmfao 23 mpg... .. what are you doing wrong.. lmmfao.. I get 34 mpg and still rev it hard..lol
Yeah...I'm a racing driver, not the pretend kind.
He looks soooooooo crammed
Not recaros
What?
Ugh. We get it: Base is Ace.
Why would you want to drive in Santa Monica? Clearly you’ve never been.
👍👍😎🇺🇸
Lol, this not fast thing always gets me. Of course it’s fast. All cars are fast today. All of them. That’s why the average cars are not deemed “fast” in relative terms - I get that. But the way people speak it’s as if they’re not fast *in absolute terms*... did you ever check sports cars a couple of decades ago? They were considered fast and these would smoke them. Not fast! Lol, if you’re Hamilton, you can say that, but I’d like to see the average driver handle the roads at top speed in a roadster like this one. Not fast. Lofl.
and to be clear, handling the roads is not driving for a couple of meters and applying the brakes. It’s keeping speed with twists and turns.
For context, I have several racing championships to my name and was driving fast cars decades ago. This is slow. That doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Right...
I'm an android user. Won't look at Apple.
As they say, whatever floats your boat!
The MX5 has both. They don't alienate customers given they know its half and half in most markets. But android doesn't have wireless support yet given some mistakes made by google with updates.
I'm getting one, but an automatic lol
#savethemanuals !
Nooooo! Automatic is really missing the point on this car
stopped watching when you said those are Recaros
please present accurate info in future videos, thank you

@Andrew Brown you missed the point...I retain mistakes to test theories about human nature. It's fascinating.
@@BrianMakse : To further your "studies": The Bilstein dampers are available without having to get the BBS/Brembo package. The LSD is useful for driving on the street (not just the track), especially (and ironically, considering the theme of your review) in winter driving.
