Looking to get my first monitor and it'll probably be an Ackie and I really enjoyed this video. Definitely offered some insights I hadn't heard from other tubers. Thanks for the hard work, my friend!
I have a question for enclosure I know you said air humidity isn’t as important as substrate humidity but is it possible to add a small water feature into a ackie enclosure?
water features are usually hard to maintain and add correctly in reptile enclosures. If you really want to though, do not see why not. Just do not make it big.
I don’t mean any offense by this but are you really a professor because if you are then you seem like on the coolest and best professors. But keep up the good work, after years of wanting a reptile my parents finally agreed on a a lizard and the ackie monitor will be my first. I love reptiles and we have a dog and two cats but reptiles have always been a dream. They are just so interesting and beautiful. Keep up the good work I am going to subscribe.
I was going for my doctorate to become a professor but am settling for a Masters now due to finances being tough! Thanks for watching and subscribing! Best of luck with your Ackie! Make sure youre ready haha!
@@ProfessorHerp that’s cool I’m still in high school and I am planning to get my doctorates through the Air Force because they pay for all of it. But yea finances are tough right now and you need a good plan to get through it. Also I may be getting a tegu if I can convince my mom, she hasn’t decided on either one but for a while it was just ackie until recently.
Great to have such resources, here in my country ackies are one of the 19 species of reptile we are allowed to keep, and in my objective oppinion the most interesting of the lot.
Packing my beardie around on my neck and chest I try to make sure there’s clothing between us, besides I don’t want him getting any of my sweat on him, if he hangs out for a bit I end up getting a rash from his belly scales, so even in summer now when I’m in a strapless or tank top I put a cloth napkin (his nighttime blanket ;) between us
The height of the water bowl will help keep dirt out regardless of how full the water bowl is. The surface area of water is what adds additional humidity. So you could fill up the water bowl and throw a few peices of copper into it to help keep it cleaner longer so you could get away with less water changes.
Height of the water bowl is important in the context of keeping the water shallow. Additionally, a water bowl is not to helpful in boosting humidity in an accurately sized enclosure, especially when it is the substrate moisture that counts. Water bowls usually keep the substrate below it moist. That is the only area I see helpful humidity wise when talking about a water bowl.
This was a great video, thank you! I don't have an acki yet but one day I would love to! I just need more inside space, since I'm in Ohio and winter is a thing. Lol 😆
How much does an adult ackie sleep? Mine seems to sleep or chill out alot. I have home office so I monitor his activity...sort off. The lights go on at around 7 in the morning. He will bask for some time and he/she runs around, digging, hunting and burrowing. Feeding at around 2 and after that is done it seems to just chill out till around 4-5 and just fall asleep
Really helpful vid! This is probably a really stupid question, but I've been looking at getting an ackie as my beardie sadly passed, is there a difference between red and yellow ones or is that purely colour and size and care is the same? Probably a stupid question, but thanks for any help!
this is an old video, but do you remember what age your ackies were at when the finger was bitten off? was it in their weird teenage stage of 3 months to 7 months?
So funny nust last night in achie monitor fan fb grp i had posted about my ackie after almost a year still being skittish and was lookjng for tips. Which all the ansers i got were really just common sense imo but i dint think being new to monitors that even at a year to a year plus they'd still be that skittish .knowing that now i feeling a lil better that im not doing anything wrong i guess id say and that obviously more time is required for my monitor to settle down and realize that im no threat and just want to be his/her friend and socialize
I read a paper about candling varanids to sex them that claimed to be accurate in juveniles and adults of several species, including ackies. It did not specifically mention neonates though. Do you (or anyone else) have any experience or insight on this?
I think youre right on the spoy mate! Maybe add Point 6? if you do not like cats, there is hardly coming anything close than an Ackie. They behave so much like each other. They are nothing like dogs! They do their own thing at their own time never try to tell them what to donor like, they get skittish and stay away from you. If you do it right the even knock on the glass to let you know 'he there its high time for me to see the larger world, I need some adventure and maybe some socializing and a cuddle...
You must have some subscribers of generous means if they are thinking of buying TWO Ackies🤣 I can't speak for everyone else but I really like when you do Ackie information. As soon as I get my beardie to adulthood, I'm likely getting an Ackie next. The information on them is sparse by comparison to Beardies.
Beardie bites are so much worse than ackie bites for me. When my ackie bit me earlier this year I expected a lot worse but it was less painful than dropping your phone on your thumb and she basically learned from that experience that biting doesn't work to scare me away and hasn't done it again since. My young beardie got me twice this month but his are more of a not seeing the food in my hand, deciding to launch in the general direction of the food anyway and getting me instead. They've got serrated little steak knife teeth that draw a surprising amount of blood and the pressure feels like jamming your finger in a door and leaves quite a bit of bruising. Thankfully my biggest beardie is really shy and hasn't got me yet because I KNOW he'd get me a one way ticket to the clinic for stitches if he did what the younger one did. He's got a head bigger than a Repashy bottle and I don't want that clamped onto anything it shouldn't be. When he gets his favourite baby food as a treat, he puts cracks in the plastic spoon. That ain't gonna be any of my bones.
Ackie bits are more shock value than anything to me. I dont ever expect them but when they do I am just shocked by the initial, unanticipated bite but there is relatively no pain. Never got bit by a beardie though!
@@ProfessorHerp Yeah, I don't suggest it. Lol. Especially with how big Max is getting. But any bite from a pet can be a shock. You think you're building up a good relationship and then bam. Launches at you mouth open and clings on until they calm down. My beardie bites were food responses so they weren't like that but my ackie only bit me or tried to bite me out of self defense. Not sure if a bite would be worse or better out of hunger or being scared, but I guess there's a chance that time will tell.
Have you ever dealt with eggbinding in female Ackies? I've read that it's the leading cause of mortality for females, but there isn't much material out there on how to mitigate.
Maybe I can do a video on the topic. I do speak to that a lot in my older Ackie videos. I never dealt with it though. A proper laying site solves the issue. Make sure you have enough substrate depth for laying (I recommend 18" or more), there is a spot 12+" down that hits 86F, and that the substrate 12"+ down is moist. A lay box works as well.
You look like Adam's brother.😀 Also if I would buy an Ackie that's 7months and he's sexed as a male for example. Do I really need to buy another Ackie then? Because I rather have 1. And I need to learn a lot more about them before I get one. Maybe in about 2-3years I'm ready. I really love monitor lizards. But don't have space for the big ones like an Asian water monitor. I prefer the smaller ones anyway.

What feeder did you use at 1:36?
Primarily Dubia Roaches with a lot of other inverts mixed in. Super worms, crickets, hornworms, locust. Variety in diet is key
Put a reeves stack type basking area in their cage. Should help keep the nails from being as fine.

Reds are said to be more temperamental but I have not seen any direct evidence of that. They are also slightly larger than yellows.
