Our Ackie Monitor is arguably the best lizard having had lots of different lizards! He's very inquisitive and has never bitten probably best described as being a puppy dog and likes cuddles.... we got him for free from someone who accidentally put two males together but is the most amazing lizard and lovely to watch
I first saw this video right after it came out, and I immediately fell in love. after a lot of back and forth with my family ("you shouldn't get such a difficult lizard as your first reptile") I finally have gotten two ackies for myself, after a bearded dragon, leopard gecko, corn snake, and a random lizard I got from my neighbor's kid who bought it off morphmarket. I still wish I had gotten the ackie first but this is 100% my favorite thing ever.
"The hardest this about them will be keeping them fed because they do love to eat" *I look at my ackie that refuses to eat almost everything I give her* "You hear that? Stop sleeping all day and eat your crickets!"

A shop owner here in Arizona just hatched a clutch of red Ackies 2 days ago. Only selling two of them though as he's going to keep breeding. Absolutely adorable little things.
I've been trying to hunt my Ackie down for nearly 5 years, finally got my hands on him last weekend and he's wonderful :D Just fed him his first super worm and he ripped it right out of the tongs! At least he isn't scared of everything.
Hello Mr Clint 👋🏻!! After watching you’re vid and doing some homework of my own i took the plunge and got my own ackie (yellow) should be receiving her tues. Amazing job youre doing with the channel very informative especially for a reptile newb like myself keep up the good job sir!! 👍🏻
Ackies are an easy favorite for us. I have worked with reptiles over 25 years now and had many species in that time. A lot of information you gave here is applicable and some not so much. The enclosure and Powersun specifically are not what I'd suggest and I don't use coconut coir with anything. They aren't cheap. That much is true and we typically sell out what we decide to part with super quickly.. like spoken for before they even meet their first bug!(yes, we breed reds and yellows) We aren't the cheapest breeder out there but guaranteed you get what you pay for in quality. We selectively breed them so their colors and patterns are quite vibrant. Stop by and see for yourself.(our videos aren't fantastic but click through to our Facebook and you'll see what I mean) Good effort. Go ackies!
Honestly, a smaller male might work in that but larger is definitely better. If using a 40G breeder we usually suggest covering all lid area where the light isn't coming through with something to hold in heat and moisture. More is always better and they will use every inch provided. Check out our care sheet for my take on keeping. Always do more research but consider the source. Do they keep them or make them? How's the quality? etc.. can be said of any species. www.reptiletalk.net/ridgetail-monitor/
I think I'm in love... I have been looking for a monitor that the wife would be okay with and I think this is the one. Definitely going to look into the ackie more

I just realized this video was from 5 years ago! I have loved watching you progress over the last few years, Clint! I have an ackie and a Savannah, and I’d love to discuss Savannah’s with you some day! My big boy is my baby, and, with enough work, they can be as amazing as tegus. I’m happy to send you some footage and pictures of my Sav (Jabba) and of course my ackie, Frida!
We have a beautiful ackie in our shop and I'll be gutted when he eventually sells, I can confirm as his carer that they are every bit as excellent as Clint has just explained ❤️
Awesome video. I have one (8months old) and it is probably my favorite pet atm 😂 you definitely need to be able to put some time in to build trust but mannnn it is rewarding when it comes together!
I'd say reptiles are the least smelly pets you could potentially get. They don't eat often, meaning they don't have to poop often either. I recently got spotted pythons and the only thing I smell is their substrate.
My boy is in a 120x60x60 Enclosure ... with a 30cm deep substrate ... he’s either jumping around like a kid with ADHD on LSD or he’s buried to China ... no in between hahah
I been bitten by a juvenile Ackie moniter at school where I was holding him, then he ran up my shoulder and bit me on the ear luckily it didn’t hurt because the teacher waited until the class had seen it until he got it off. Honestly a 10/10 experience
You really do read your comments. Thanks so much guys, channel rocks! And out of many opinions I waited for yours the longest because I value your information and this content. Awesome stuff man! Your teams rocks too!
if you live in the charlotte, North carolina area the pet shop "Cold Blooded and Bizzare" sells yellow/red tailed ackie monitors. they have several in their shop. so anyone in that area they have great stuff. i bought mine from them at the Charlotte Repticon back in oct, i go there alot for any reptile enclosure needs and isopods and they still have them in the shop
Luckily for me, I have a reptile shop in my area that breeds ackies, currently has 2 subs and 1 adult for sale. Ill prolly buy one next year when I can.
This is our dream lizard for us too! Working on it now before we get one. Monitor without the size and crazy claws(😂). Can't wait to get one! Handled one once and fell in love. And so active.
Thank you so much for this video. You inspired me and now my ackie "occamy" is part of my Swiss lizard family! He's wonderful! Beautiful! Just as you said it!
@clintsreptiles would love to see some more in-depth "how to" videos for how to set up a system for these little guys and other lizards like them that have slightly unusual requirements. How to set up a basking spot that will have the right gradient? when to use heat tape? how much UVB is enough? how much is too much? Love your review videos, love the build videos. Would love to see your take on the principles of setting up enclosures.
Clint and I share the same fascination with monitor lizards, my dream pet is a black dragon water monitor. But I wont get that until I have a humungous room with an attached outdoor section for the summer time when he can enjoy the sun all the new smells and a big outdoor pond. I'll probably get a pair of ackies one day to get myself ready for a giant monitor. I've had tegus in the past and would love to have another one day too.
Finally an ackie vid!!! Awesome! I'm still looking for a yellow ackie myself, I'd rate them -4 on availability LOL. I already have a Dubia roach colony breeding and waiting to be eaten when I can find the perfect little yellow ackie.
After handling Patrick the yellow Ackie at Clint's Reptile Room my husband said he could see us getting an Ackie monitor. It made me so happy to hear those words! ...I think he's a yellow but I could be wrong.
Speaking of Komodo Dragon... how about "Komodo Dragon, The Best Pet Lizard?" And speaking of lizards that run... how about "Perentie, The Best Pet Lizard?"
I have a Surinam Horned Frog (I named him Jabba) and he is so much fun to have, especially when he eats...I didn’t think I’d ever see a frog eat a mouse, but he continues to amaze me! Plus he’s so easy to take care of too, not needing too much space since all he really does is sit in 1 spot. The only thing I’m unsure about is how to go about handling him...I know generally you aren’t supposed to handle amphibians, but I really want to try handling him. Is it safe for me to handle him? Will it hurt him in any way?
I was surprised to see the 2/5 for availability, the local reptile store I go to for my leopard gecko supplies (and future rosy boa supplies) has two enclosures with a red and yellow ackie monitors respectively
Thank you so much for making this amazing video. Our local reptile store sells ackie monitors. I am saving up to buy one this upcoming summer of 2023. The local reptile store owner knows breeders who have little ackies every summer. I can't wait!!! Komodo dragons have always been one of my favorite animals. I work at a local petland in thier fish/reptile department. My name tag is Komodo Dragon Kayla. 🐉(since you pick out an animal that starts with the first letter of your name!) lol 😆 so an ackie is basically the closest thing I'll have to one of my favorite animals of all time... the komodo dragon! PS: after watching videos on the komodo dragon we went to the zoo next day just so I could see them in person! Lol Anyways sorry for the long comment. I just love anything to do with monitor lizards. Haha Thanks again for the awesome videos as always and stay rad!!! 👌✌️
We call them Ridge-tailed Monitor Varanus acanthurus in Australia where they are found. They reach to 60cm bigger than what he says. There are actually 3 subspecies not 2 also. Can live in colonies.
I was lucky enough to get an ackie from a local reptile rescue here in CA for 50$ of course when I got him I had no idea how expensive and rare they actually are
Loved the vid mate! Getting an ackie this week and you've definitely convinced me I've made the righg choice, I can't wait! Keep up the entertaining vids you've got a sub 🙌🙌
Thanks for inspiring us to get a beautiful red ackie boy! I think it will be interesting to have him and our Uromastyx in our household. My wife is thrilled about the insect farms already 😂
Here I am almost 3 years after the video was published rewatching it yet again. Big difference is this time I have two yellow ackies rather than zero ackies. But yes, they need a ton of space. My pair will be upgraded from a 4x2x2 as juveniles to an 8x2x2 when they are about 9-11 months old.
To note, an ackie will need a large enclosure...prepare to spend between $500-$1500 on the enclosure. The ackie itself will likely cost less than the enclosure. Luckily, they seem to breed well so there is rarely a time where you can't find one from a good breeder. The only "knock" on ackies are they do need a fairly large enclosure for their size. Other than that, they may simply be the best pet lizard period all things considered. I love you Clint but the cage you have linked in the description is NOT big enough for an adult. Min size for 1 adult is 4x2x2 feet(120 gallons), but bigger is always better with monitors.
Is 120 gallons (4x2x2) a comfortable size it will enjoy? There is a place I have so it can run around without restrictions so will it do well in the grand scheme of things?
@@rhysme423 "Comfortable"...debatable. If you have 3 sided ledge to extend the surface area that will help alot. These guys are ACTIVE. My 8 month old uses every square inch of his 6x3x3 with background ledges. That's not to say 6x3x3 is the minimum. Ackies will make you think any size enclosure is too small because of how active they are. If the most you can afford is a 4x2x2 which beyond that is where the price really starts to take off dramatically, a single ackie can do pretty well in one but it's not optimal. The trick will be having enough burrowing substrate(which stays damp at the bottom), and a good thermal gradient. I want to encourage more people to keep ackies as I think they are among the best pet lizards but they do need more space than their size would suggest. If you can wait another few months and save up for at least a 4x2x3 or 5x3x3, I would. Ackies aren't going anywhere. They are very popular and available all the time. One further piece of advice is if handling is part of why you want an ackie, ask the seller specifically what the temperment is. Even skittish ackies can be worked with but it is 10x easier to start with a bold and or calm ackie than have to work with them for 6 months to get them to not run at the sight of you. Also if you see an ackie being sold for really cheap, there is a reason why...be cautious.
@@mattm7798 hmmm ok! I’m deciding whether to wait and save for the very expensive ackie (with enclosure that is) and a Pygmy mulga… I have found good space for mulga’s in terrariums for sale. But as an adult I’m going to keep both of them anyway. Edit: I have decided on an ackie, they are more recommended and far more common, the tank I’m looking at is a 5x3x3 for 1600 or so dollars (I’m in Australia that makes things different) and though it will take me a long long time I hope my parents can help me get the enclosure
@@rhysme423 Ah, you're in Australia, that changes things a bit. Not sure what enclosure options are available down under. Yeah, if this is your first monitor, the gilleni can be tempting because some of them can be bold but ive never heard them described as calm. And most of the other odatria don't share the ackie temperment(which really sucks because they are a great size for pets). There is another dwarf monitor we don't have in the US because Australia has way too strict export laws: v. hamersleyensis . I don't know much about them but heard they have better temperaments than other dwarfs not including ackies. It is native to Australia so check it out. So a tip with your parents helping: Make a deal with them. Get good grades or earn something for them to help you. It shows them you're serious and if they at least tolerate reprtiles, all the more reaosn when you do get the monitor, you confirm with the seller it's calm and tame. Again, Ackies are very common(at least in the states) so don't settle. They are so interactive, it's like have a cat with scales(maybe a bit of an exaggeration but close)

I was actually searching you channel last week for an ackie video, nice timing!
My ackie monitor is just the best! Your video has been so helpful. Thank you:)
U are definitely the top 5 best reptile TH-camr ever thx a lot for the info
Today I adopted a little ackie monitor from a reptile care center. So happy with him.
Thank you so much for this video. You inspired me and now my ackie "occamy" is part of my Swiss lizard family! He's wonderful! Beautiful! Just as you said it!
Is he hand tamed?
@@pixxels-_-1507 not yet. Shes just half a year old. So.. still working on it. 😊
Love your videos and I always enjoy seeing ackies!!!!!
I love your interpretation of a lizard running
@clintsreptiles would love to see some more in-depth "how to" videos for how to set up a system for these little guys and other lizards like them that have slightly unusual requirements. How to set up a basking spot that will have the right gradient? when to use heat tape? how much UVB is enough? how much is too much? Love your review videos, love the build videos. Would love to see your take on the principles of setting up enclosures.
I officially love this channel.
I love your videos so much! I just found them the other day and have been binging them all
After handling Patrick the yellow Ackie at Clint's Reptile Room my husband said he could see us getting an Ackie monitor. It made me so happy to hear those words!
...I think he's a yellow but I could be wrong.
So cool, I might research more into this monitor.
Speaking of Komodo Dragon... how about "Komodo Dragon, The Best Pet Lizard?"
And speaking of lizards that run... how about "Perentie, The Best Pet Lizard?"
Ease of handling- um
Cost
Just got my first ackie 😍😍😍 thank you xxxx
Been thinking of getting one, this is SUPER helpful! thanks a lot man
I have a Surinam Horned Frog (I named him Jabba) and he is so much fun to have, especially when he eats...I didn’t think I’d ever see a frog eat a mouse, but he continues to amaze me!
Rexx Main clean your hands thoroughly before handling and hold him like a cheeseburger
Lol
Anyways sorry for the long comment. I just love anything to do with monitor lizards. Haha Thanks again for the awesome videos as always and stay rad!!! 👌✌️
Can you do a video of you feeding Nagini sometime? It sounds like it would be very fun to watch!
We call them Ridge-tailed Monitor Varanus acanthurus in Australia where they are found. They reach to 60cm bigger than what he says. There are actually 3 subspecies not 2 also. Can live in colonies.
My three hatchling reds are doing great by far the most fun lizard to just sit and watch
I was lucky enough to get an ackie from a local reptile rescue here in CA for 50$ of course when I got him I had no idea how expensive and rare they actually are
yamil I that’s a lick you hit my friend
Great video! I didn't catch a mention of Ackie lifespan in captivity. Did I just miss it? As always, thanks for the great content :)
15-20 years lifespan in captivity
Loved the vid mate! Getting an ackie this week and you've definitely convinced me I've made the righg choice, I can't wait! Keep up the entertaining vids you've got a sub 🙌🙌
I'm binging all your videos right now! Subbed!!
New to your channel and i'm loving it😍....you say its name much, it's making me crave Ackee (the fruit) and saltfish...lol
I would love to see you do a complete Ackie Care Guide. Possibly even with Emily if she thought they were stinking rad too
Thanks for inspiring us to get a beautiful red ackie boy! I think it will be interesting to have him and our Uromastyx in our household.
My wife is thrilled about the insect farms already 😂
They've got a baby yellow ackie in my repltile place currently beautiful little fella. They have also got a yellow headed monitor whos bit of a beast.
I’m gonna get one in a year or so. Gonna be my first monitor, so any tips will be deeply appreciated
I’m legitimately getting an ackie in a week so this video has come at a great time 👌🏻
i have always wanted to get one and am hoping to FINALY purchase one
Older video but thank you regardless Clint. Ackies are available now on morphmarket.
Yea I just Hatched 9 of them between June & July. I have one available on MorphMarket
@@mattm7798 gee whiz! Thank you so much
