  • This video shows you in under 5 minutes how to fix the clicking and popping sounds you get when sidechaining sounds in EDM production.
    This happens particularly with bass sounds.
    Well, I have a quick fix…it takes a couple of seconds to do, and you’ll never get that annoying clicking sound again.
    Let me know if it helps in the comments below 🙂

      I know you mainly focus on things like music theory, mixing, an work flow, but can you maybe show us some of the basics, and fundamentals to sound design? Maybe using serum, or something most people are familiar with. I have taken all of your courses, and now I feel that this is the one area in which I am lacking.

    There's also a 'Smooth' setting down at the bottom of the LFO Tool screen which is there specifically to remove clicks without having to alter the actual LFO.
    I use it all the time.

      Not really. Tweaking the attack and release to not be super-fast (or using LFO Tool) always gets rid of the problem for me. Are you positive it's the sub bass causing the clicking? Another option is to Low-pass filter the sub bass.

      have you found a solution for this?

    • @godsick
      @godsick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thozimusic Be careful when EQ'ing groups and master, in certain cases stuff like the reverb tail of an impact may bleed into the response of your EQ giving you a completely different sounding transient each beat, it happens when you boost certain bands around 100-250hz and reverb tails with any mid range get in it, it's not really a good idea to EQ the master because even though nobody is talking about it, there is contamination from trying to process the sum of frequencies, that produce other frequencies at different times.

    You tend to use a hi hat sample as your side chain key. One option if you do that is to use a sample with a slight nonzero attack. I tend to use a simple synth (playing a 5k sine wave) with a desired ADSR to produce the key, rather than a hi hat, and have a slight nonzero attack. The thing with that, compared to e.g. lfotool, is that in lfotool when you fix the click by shifting the node at the top right a bit, the resulting envelope ducks just _before_ the beat, so that it is fully ducked _by the time_ the kick drum hits. Softening the attack of a compressor means that the ducked signal is not ducked at the point when the kick drum starts, but ducks just after it.

    There's another fix for this if you're using Ableton. If you look on the right of the compressor, there is an "RMS" Button. This changes how the compressor reacts to the incoming audio. Works wonders on Bass!

    Thanks for this! Liking LFO tool, but what if my sidechain input is irregular, instead of straight quarter notes? Is there a way to route the sidechain input to trigger the LFO tool graph? I know of the "Note Re-trig" option, but I believe that would respond to the sound that is being compressed. not the sidechain trigger.
    Hope that makes sense

      @@gbigbo_zjebeezjeboo I figured it out! Put the native plugin "external instrument" on your trigger track and use it to send output to the LFO tool instance on the track getting sidechained.
      In LFOtool, toggle the Note Re-trig to the "ENV" setting. That way it will trigger the LFO pattern each time the trigger track tells it to.

    Yeah using kickstart sorted the problem. That compressor is so annoying. Love the sound of it but when you push it hard its always click click click. I think cableguys volume tool probably works as well but that uses more cpu. Wonder if theres a way to just EQ it out

    • @Chalisque
      @Chalisque 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the signal you're applying the sidechain to has significant high frequency content, then eq'ing out the click will remove a lot of this. If you don't, you _could_ try an EQ. But I'd suggest you to experiment and look at the resulting waveforms to see the effect. Especially try it with a low frequency sine wave as this makes it most obvious what is happening with the clicks.
      The other, more technical thing that comes to mind, is that if you consider what is called an 'impulse train', basically a periodic signal made of clicks (very short pulses), its frequency content contains energy at _all_ frequencies, including low ones. So the click created by a fast attacking compressor will have more than just high frequency content, so eq will not remove the entirety of the click.

    • @EDMTips
      @EDMTips  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian Paterson well, not that I know of (apart from with the LFO Tool). You can also low pass filter the click out on a sub bass, but that’s not ideal as it ties you to very low frequencies only

      Try using the lookahead option in compressors. Touching the release in LFOTool is like using lookahead: activating before a real start point, because the LFO repeats its volume automation everytime.
      Try using ducking/manual sidechain.

    • @Chalisque
      @Chalisque 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Close to Will's approach with sidechains.
      Use a sample waveform as the sidechain signal (where Will usually uses a hi hat) and use a sample with a slight nonzero attack (things like hi hats attack _too_ quickly).
      You can easily do this by playing a high note like C6 through a sine wave synth and set an appropriate ADSR envelope, then sample the end result. But the basic idea is a sine wave with an envelope that doesn't start quickly enough to cause a click. If you want the compressor to attack slightly early to compensate for the slower attack, use delay compensation on the sidechain key track. (This is much easier to actually do than it is to explain.)
      If you want to visualise the problem of clicking, make a track with a 100hz sine wave, and apply the sidechain compressor to it. Then use resampling to another track to capture the resulting waveform and then zoom in and take a look. What you'll see is a sine wave that is suddenly abruptly cut off. The more sharply it goes to zero, the more pronounced the click. You have to trade off how fast the signal can be cut to zero with how much clicking is tolerable.

    • @Chalisque
      @Chalisque 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The _problem_ can be explained in 15secs by showing what the compressor does to a lowish frequency sine wave (this makes it visually obvious why the click happens). Explaining the _solution_ fully is not so quick. It depends upon whether you using a compressor or something like lfotool. In the case of a compressor, one solution is to soften the attack of the compressor, but this comes at the expense of the compressed signal not being fully ducked when e.g. the kick drum plays. In the case of lfotool, you make it duck slightly more slowly from slightly earlier (note that the lfotool will be fully ducked _by the time the kick plays_). In the case of softening the attack of the compressor, you have the option of setting a longer attack time, or possibly switching from peak to rms (I have not tested this option). Another thing with a compressor is what you are using as the sidechain input -- the actual kick sample, something like a hi hat sample, or something synthesized (e.g. a 5k sine wave with an ADSR envelope).
      Personally I think 5 mins is a good length for a video discussing the issue. If your attention span doesn't last that long, perhaps music production isn't for you. Of course you're welcome to produce an ultrashort video (under 1m) showing the problem and solution. I have an idea as to how it is done: sample of audio showing the problem for 10secs with captions; picture of a sine wave abruptly cut off by the compressor, showing what an ultrafast attack does to the waveform, hence the click. Then three slides for each of the possibilities above (compressor fixed by adjusting attack, compressor fixed by adjusting key signal, lfotool). Maybe you'd like to knock such a video up?
