Man, nothing better than when you find the tutorial that finally ties together all the other tutorials you've watched. I redid my kick and low end on my newest track based on these suggestions and am sitting in my studio dying laughing from joy. I love that I can move forward on all my future tracks and carry these easy methods with me to find what kind of sound works for what type of track. I was definitely someone who would find a "good enough" kick and bass and then spend ages adding effects and EQ'ing, only to have to come back later and redo it all again. Starting off with strong sounds is absolutely key and got me 95% of the way there before doing any EQ'ing, compression or sidechaining. I was shocked at how good it sounded with no effects on the channels. Thanks so much!
When you want to pitch your kick back down from the high tuning range the quick octave shortcut is : select the pitch parameter then press shift and down. The pitch will transpose down by an octave. Press again for another octave. No need for a calculator.

You're very welcome, Orion, I am glad you found it helpful! Anything else in particular you’re struggling with and would like me to cover on the channel?
I just learned that you have a mixing guide. Thanks for making it free, most people say “IT’S JUST $10” (for example) but when everyone is charging you $10 (or more) for everything + all the money you just dropped on you new equipment you suddenly start feeling like you won’t be a good producer unless you have a ton of money (which is technically not true, but they really are making it that way)
Cheers, Boris! I understand that in order to produce high quality content you need to invest money so if people decide to charge $10 for a useful piece of content, I can see no problem with that. However, my mixing guide is totally free for anyone who wants it.
I think what is very Important too is the Mid/Side Equing especially on the Low End when it comes to the Mastering Process or in the Bass+Kick Bus , a 12dB/Oct Lowcut at arround 150-170 Hz in the Side Signal helps to clean up the Lowend aswell , important to get a Loud Mix and a Lowcut with a 24/36 dB/Oct at arround 30-40 Hz in the Mid Signal makes the Lowend a bit more Solid :) And of Course all Elements which dont are called Bass or Kick with an obligatory Lowcut anyway :)
I made a summary again ;) Thanks for your video :) 02:51 - Mistake 1: Choosing the wrong Kick for you Bass or vice versa. Rule: Sharp Kick - sustained bass and vice versa. Just listen to the low end (low pass on master) for searching the right combination of kick and bass 05:37 - Mistake 2: Forget to tune the kick to the root note of the track or to the 3th or 5th to the root note. Doesn't always work but most times its better to do it. 09:14 - Mistake 3: Frequency masking / clashing of different instruments, e.g. Kick and Bass clash on A0. Solution: Bass at A0 - take away some A0 from the kick and see if it works better. Always take away from the less instrument. 12:19 - Mistake 4: Treating Kick and Bass as one instrument. Ozon Imager to identify face issues (anything < 0). Solution: Separate Sub Bass (simple, mono, sine, adsr and filter as main bass), high pass on main bass (100-120 Hz) 15:50 - Mistake 5: Not sidechaining your kick and bass. Solution: Compressor or LFO Tool 17:22 - Mistake 6: Not Bussing. Solution: Process the Kick and Bass at some stage together and comrpess them together (equal the volumes out, make it more unifying). Add some Limiting or Distortion. 20:50 - Mistake 7: Not adding sub harmonics. Free Plugin: Bark of Dog. Boost it hard, search for the frequency where the bass pops through, then dial in the boost (6-8 db).
Awesome video. I'm curious about how you handle EQ notching for masking prevention across different notes of the bassline? Are you notch EQ'ing the kick drum according to the root note of the bassline and then leaving it at that frequency, or do you automate your EQ notch to follow note changes in the bass?
I am not going to tell a lie BUT this made a 500% improvement to what I am working on! Will, you are the best! WOW, what a game-changing tip right here AND as always delivered in the concise and understandable manner that makes EDM Tips stand out above the rest! Thank you so much for this!

Bro your help is invaluable. I don't have the opportunity to buy your full course but even so I'm extremely grateful to you. You know perhaps this is really one of the best channels on this topic. *THANKS A LOT BRO!*
try reversing the "basic shapes" sine wave so that will actually be a true sine or you can just go into the wavetable editor , left click; hit clear and make your own sine wave by just turning up the very first frequncy bin as high as it goes ... you could even add some more punch to it by slightly turning up the next few bins up and play with the phase offset (the bins underneith the freq. bins to get your prefered sound. but yea... that basic shapes sine is backwards another important thing is to make sure the random knob for the oscillator is off. awesome trick though for sure! also a big thanks for showing the bark of dog plug in. im going to half to check one that out. I love subs with tons of low end. alot of times for my own mixes i wont even cut off the 20hz and just let it jam( i know thats kind frowned upon but its crazy how much a 20hz cut can change a sub)
Stereo-Bass-ISSUE: You can also take a EQ on your bass set it to side mode so you're only touching the side frequencies and cut the lowend to 200+hz that makes the lows mono but keeps the Stereowidth of a maybe interesting Bass. I Hope this is additionally helpful. Thanks alot for your Video it helps to hear those little tips and things over and over to really burn them into the workflow! Hi Will, good video as always! I just have a question regarding your comment at 14:10. In my notes, I have it down that the sub bass doesn't need to match the shape, because that shape quality already provided for by the mid-bass e.g sub doesn't need to be plucky because the mid is
BTW I'd love to se your tips on synthesis with Serum and/or any other ninja moves you have. I spend so much time on sound design and I'd rather get tips from you than search the billion other randos who. put up a video so they can show off their demo tape.
How are you balancing filling up the low mids between your synths and bass, where the bass occupies less time per bar? If your sub occupies up to 120hz, what do you do to fill the gaps between 120hz to about 300-400hz when the bass note isn't hitting and you've HPF'd your pads to about 300 or 400hz to carve out space for the low mids of the bass? I hope this makes sense.
Thanks, Will. I like to get the bass right before the kick so I use a crappy kick that doesn't get in the way until I'm ready to think about it. You know that sort of kick, one that would even be rejected by the Alan Parsons Project.
Awesome video Will ... learning so much from you !!! .....can you show how to miz pianos and guitars like Kygo , Avicii , Alesso , Robin ?....how to actually compress them and how to achieve a good stereo balance with them !
While replacing your sub with a clean sinewave might be beneficial in some cases, it's a trade off because you may loose the charachter of the sound in the lower spectrum. You could also split your synth patch over a couple of bands keeping the lows real tight like that.
Hi! I love your videos and as someone who is starting, this is great! Could someone explain tho the difference between (increasing?) the sub-harmonics and increasing the volume/gain? Thanks a lot :)
use vital, send sine wave direct out (not to filter) that makes a great lowend bass tone which is consistent to the bass notes you play, tune it an octave lower than your played notes, use shaperbox to sidechain the sub frequencies, manipulate overtones with the wave editor instead of the filter can also improve /stabilize phase response, always turn off random phase in your plugin.

I switched from Logic Pro X to Ableton and I’m loving Ableton so far! The only regret is not getting Ableton Suite. I went with the Standard edition for budget reasons but I will update once I get the chance for sure… thanks for the tips 🤘🏻
Thank you Will this is interesting, but I have a few remarks/questions :) - regarding the kick/bass frequencies masking: each time I watch a tutorial about this topic, the guy is looping a bassline with the same key (in your case A so the kick has to be lowered at 110 Hz) but in real like the bassline is made of more than one key so what is the process if want the kick to not mess with EVERY bass notes? - What is the need of doing the "frequencies masking tip" if you also do the "sidechain tip"? because the goal is the same for both tips. it's not clear for me why you are doing both tips... - I notice there is a delay FX on your bass track. But is it not risky to add delay (that adds phase issues) in a bass instrument? I thought the main rule of thumb was to avoid messing with phase when we work with the lowend instruments (kick and bass). What is your opinion? Thanks.
Hi @EDMTips, great vid man. Are there other low end frequency enhancers you would recommend other than Bark of Dog? Perhaps even a step above BoD? I am an Apple M1 user and it currently does not run on M1 Macs.
super helpful ! do you always check for phasing BEFORE adding the sub bass channel? Id think adding a separate sub, while cancelling it out in your bass track, could almost always be beneficial no?
Well, I separate low end inside one bass track using audio effect rack and creating 3 chains in it - LOW, MID and HIGH - EQ end put effects in each chain. Of course there is "Utility=>Bass Mono" before that rack
Hey! I've been following for a while now, great videos and tutorials! I have a couple of questions if that's OK? How would you go about EQ'ing if the kick and bass were in the same key? Also, at 17:45ish, unless I'm missing something, you put the bass bus into the kick bus? How do you do this please? I can only create one bus containing the kick and bass or two individual buses for each. I'm so confused right now!🤣😂 Thanks mate!
Simply route the bass bus and kick bus to a third bus. In ableton, you group two groups. If kick and bass are in the same key it depends on many factors on how to EQ, for example the length of the kick, the presence and higher frequencies of the bass, which instrument is more important, what genre you're playing and so on. Anyway you can do sidechain, multiband compression, mid-side EQ, and surgical EQ cuts.

I switched from Ableton to *Bitwig Studio!* Best decision ever made! 👍
You’re welcome!
How are you finding it? I’ve been using Pro for a couple years but apparently it’s not the best DAW to mix/master music (not including vocals)??
Thank you Will this is interesting, but I have a few remarks/questions :)
- regarding the kick/bass frequencies masking: each time I watch a tutorial about this topic, the guy is looping a bassline with the same key (in your case A so the kick has to be lowered at 110 Hz) but in real like the bassline is made of more than one key so what is the process if want the kick to not mess with EVERY bass notes?
- What is the need of doing the "frequencies masking tip" if you also do the "sidechain tip"? because the goal is the same for both tips. it's not clear for me why you are doing both tips...
- I notice there is a delay FX on your bass track. But is it not risky to add delay (that adds phase issues) in a bass instrument? I thought the main rule of thumb was to avoid messing with phase when we work with the lowend instruments (kick and bass). What is your opinion? Thanks.
great vid - thank you!!!
Why the hell have i only just seen this one...20 mins into trying it on one of my tracks and each step is making such a great difference. 🤓🤓
Haha love to hear that! :)
great one thnx a lot bro:)))))
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful! 🙂🙌🏻
Cant wait till i start the course with you guys! Much love for these tips mate :)
Look forward to working together, Zach!
Well, I separate low end inside one bass track using audio effect rack and creating 3 chains in it - LOW, MID and HIGH - EQ end put effects in each chain. Of course there is "Utility=>Bass Mono" before that rack
Another brilliant video
Thanks, Dean!
@@mariooo88 Thanks mate :)
Amazing value here. Thankyou.
