Venture off the beaten path to Davis Bayou, nestled within Gulf Islands National Seashore. This serene oasis offers hiking trails, birdwatching, and kayak adventures. Keep your camera ready for herons, egrets, and alligators. At the park welcome center, learn about the delicate coastal ecosystem and the importance of preserving these pristine habitats.

Welcome to Mobile, Alabama, where Southern charm meets coastal allure! Featuring historic streets lined with oak trees draped in Spanish moss and a vibrant culture which encompasses Mardi Gras celebrations and mouthwatering seafood joints - we definitely plan on returning!
🏖️ Visiting Gulf Shores, Alabama 🏖️
Pack your sunscreen and flip-flops! Gulf Shores beckons with its sugar-white beaches and turquoise waters. We’ll soak up the sun and hopefully even spot a playful dolphin or two. We did not get a chance to do so - but you could explore the Gulf State Park Pier, a hotspot for fishing and sunset views and when hunger strikes indulge in fresh Gulf seafood at beachfront restaurants.

Come back to North Alabama and see our gators in the wild. Why do you feel conflicted about the"Deep South?" Did you expect to see big plantation houses with slaves working out in the fields? Civil rights protests with police mowing down protestors with fire hoses? Were you disappointed by the lack of big-bellied sheriff's and chain gangs? I have encountered people from elsewhere in the US (and the world) who are bewildered when they don't find that here.

We would absolutely love to see some gators!
The conflicted feelings come from what we actually did see doing our visit - things like KKK flags flying, and numerous landmarks honoring the confederacy including prominent monuments, state parks, and clubs to join. For us, it's hard to reconcile enjoying our time in a place (the Deep South) while knowing that these things are still celebrated there.
