- The subject of Oscar-winning documentary, 'Searching for Sugar Man' singer/songwriter Sixto Rodriguez passed away recently at the age of 81, and his daughter Sandra Rodriguez-Kennedy and Matt Sullivan, founder of Light in the Attic Records -- the label that reissued Rodriguez's music -- join Morning Joe to discuss his remarkable life story and the success that came to him later in life.

Sixto Rodriguez was also a huge star in Australia in the late 70's as well. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in Sydney in February 2019 and his music moved me as much on that day as it did so many years ago. He was a gift to us all. RIP Sugarman...
I got the opportunity to work with him when the movie came out. I can attest to what everyone has been saying, he was one of the most humble and gentle souls I ever had the opportunity to meet. No Ego Hero.

I was a teenager in Johannesburg South Africa when in 1972 his album " cold fact" became all the rave amongst our generation. It was hard to understand why we suddenly switched off from Led Zeplin, Deep purple, black Sabbath, Bob Dylan and others for that brief moment in our musical history. I think it was partly due to the fact that Woodstock and ban the bomb movement had just run it's course and his music particularly his lyrics struck a chord with us all. I don't believe as you reported here that Apartheid had anything to do with it at all. Finally just to show how big a influence he had on our country, last night our regular Saturday night " The magic bus" 60's 70's rock radio programs played a 30min tribute to Rodriguez covering back to back his most endearing songs.
The anti apartheid narrative seems to be something that has been slapped on to his story in recent years , back in the 80's and 90's it wasn't generally the case . It tapped into the rebellious nature of teenagers more than anything !
I'm a South African living in the US , and just wanna tell Msnbc that Rodriguez and the movement , popularity had zero , absolutely nothing to do with apartheid . Zero , we bought his LP's because of his brilliance. It was about the music NOT apartheid.
Our condolences to his family , he was loved by South Africans .

Rest in Peace Sixto... from a South African admirer. Yes its true, he meant so much to many of us in South Africa. A true legend, even though so few knew of such for so long. I was there at his fist concert in South Africa. I love the man.

He was a truly remarkeable man and I feel blessed to have been touched by his artistry. I am so glad that, towards the end of his life at least, he was recognised for the great man that he was. Rodriguez album Cold Fact went platinum in Australia in the early 70's. Everyone had a copy of his albums. He toured here back then. He did two concert tours across the country in 1979 and 1981 and later returned to Australia in 2014 then again in 2016 for a run of 14 shows . Yes, we knew who he was ..He was very popular from the very beginning.God rest his soul. 🌷

Even the doco about him ''Searching For Sugarman" he said he was really surprised how they hardly mentioned his success in Australia,,He said he was only featured for 8 mins in the movie.
@@funkysouldancer1he said in an interview that he didn't really want his presence in the movie. So his small screen time was pretty much his decision.
He didn't give his money away; rather, he invested in people. Beautiful. I'm ashamed to admit that I had never heard of him. Plan on listening to his music and message now... RIP gentle troubadour.
What a man …listened to him constantly in the early seventies. When he came to South Africa we went to see him and my young adult son came with us. He was told that he was signing autographs backstage but by the time he got there security was no longer letting anyone in When Rodrigues realised he was being turned away he called him in and had the grace and generosity to have a chat with him. Talented, gritty, humble.
Here in the US, I've never heard of him. It's astonishing that a musician can be so influential around the world but so many of us didn't know about him until his death.
He never really made it until two South Africans eventually managed to find a internett site run by his daughter and arranged for him to do some concerts in SA. Then the movie Searching for Sugarman (named after his biggerst hit) came out and that grabbed the worlds attention. Simultainously with SA his albuums did well in Australia.
Listen to both his albums, not just Sugar Man. Sixto Rodriguez music is excellent ❤️🎸🎶🎼

record in their collections...was a fave to roll a joynt, dim the lights and get lost in that magnificent

I saw the Beach Boys a number of times....back in 2017 I was fortunate to see Rodriguez at the Grove in Anaheim, CA. (Approx. 1500 seats...small venue)
Rodriguez was partially blind, and was assisted on stage...but...what a voice.
Great show....he sounded just like he does on his record albums.

He was big in Australia as well. Toured here in the 70’s. Played Bluesfest at Byron Bay about 7 or 8 years ago. A fantastic concert. He’ll be missed.
Funny how that so-called "documentary" didn't mention his fame in Australia. That would have contradicted its premise that Rodriguez fell into complete obscurity until the film crew magically rediscovered him.

In 1981 he played the Tanelorn Festival NSW and did several other shows in Victoria,South Australia,ACT and Hobart.
I think you guys are being disingenuous and missing the point. The documentary was about South Africa's relationship with Rodriguez. The fact that for almost 30 years, due to isolation, a singer that we thought was as big as Elvis everywhere in the world, was practically unknown. It's about the mystery of why we knew nothing about him. About how we tracked him down and brought him here to soldout concerts. Had the same thing happened 20 years earlier in Australia? Yes it had. But that's not the story being told. So no, I don't think the documentary was being misleading. It was simply telling a story that the Australia chapter had nothing to do with. Just another thing, after the 1981 Australia tour, Rodriguez went back into obscurity, still not knowing he was a superstar in South Africa. It took almost another 20 years for that chapter to be finalised. So, yes, I'm glad you Australians knew and loved him as well, but don't hate a documentary that left out your story because... it wasn't telling your story.
Thank you Rodriguez for all the music. I grew up in South Africa and I and my wife will miss you living in this world. You were the sound track to our lives and helped many to think differently from the norm.

We lost Sixto on the 8th August and Mr Robbie on the 9th August..both musicians beyond definition..both wonderful story tellers and both men made being poor look so cool.
He made one of the greatest albums of all time. I have both of his albums. Both are great. He only had two albums. I wish he made another one. But it's Quality over quantity.

Just a theory, but the "don't count" might be traced to the unique and adorable way your people pronounce M&Ms(the candy). So intriguing, maybe Sixto could have written a song after learning your accent. SMARTIES CHOCOLATE CANDY (a superior version of M&Ms) is not legally allowed to be sold in the USA. The media is aware of this bias and does nothing to encourage another fantastic hard-shelled chocolate candy reaching our shores. So, NZ and the Aussie's need to keep saying "M&Ms" as often as they get the chance, until the Powers-That-Be back in the States accept your accented version of this sweet brand. Only then will the SMARTIES WALL come tumbling down. Chocolate Tounge-in-cheek tribute but Rodriguez wasn't called SUGARMAN for nothin!

Wow! What an awesome person! We could have all learned something from Rodriguez. He never blamed or resented for what had happened to him, you never heard him once say what was owed to him or what he didn't receive. No regrets, no chip on his shoulder! I wish we had more Sixto Rodriguez' in the world!
One of the artists who I had the good fortune to follow since the early 1980s when I was on border duty in Angola. Ive never stopped listening. RIP Rodrigues and thank you for the memories.

In the early nineties as a student in SA, I started buying cds, and without knowing it, I was playing catchup on artists of the past as I made my selections - Lez Zeppelin, Jimmy, Bobby D, Rodriguez, maybe some Doors, Simon and Garfunkel. He was up there and completely in that vein. RIP

Detroit produces Fordite (multicolored, layers of paint unearthed from the old Motor City car companies) used today to create beautiful jewelry and art. Magnificent then, magnificent now. Sixto is Fordite. Alive forever.

His passing should be regarded, and his music should be remembered. Thank you for this segment. I saw the movie in the theater and it is an amazing story. I wonder if his family ever pursued getting him the royalties that he never received from all of his international sales.
There might not be much in the way of "royalties" (from his early records) to collect. Artists sometimes can have a difficult time collecting payments from record labels and music publishers in the best of circumstances - obscure artists more so. Often because their recordings get copied or "pirated' outside of normal record distribution. Sixto probably received a little money when his two records were reissued in recent years. This video does make it sound like he had previously received some royalties that he would give away to family and friends.
One of the documentarians attempted to address that with a movie executive and was treated with an angry response.

Loved Sixto since the first day the needle touched the vinyl still listen to it today. Both albums in my collection. Not sure how they connect his work with ending apartheid though. Anti establishment yes for sure as the government banned his album and that made everyone rebel by playing his music. Everyone I knew at that stage got their hands on an album. Banned but it was everywhere. I suppose some see what they want to see. I see a brilliant artist and a poet with soothing sounds.
I literally discovered Rodriguez last month. Just browsing Spotify I stumbled upon Sugar Man, that whole album brought a tear to my eyes. It was just beautiful.

I came to South Africa for first time in 1992 and the first music I heard in my friends house was Rodriguez Cold fact . I fold in love with his music and from then on I was as intrigued as the rest of South Africans on who was this man. Fortunately I saw him in concert years later. A remarkable man, a legend. Rest in peace Sixto Rodriguez and thank you for your experience on this earth.

Growing up in South Africa, his music was a constant throughout my life. Was lucky enough to meet him on one of his trips over here. He will be missed.
I discovered his music back when the documentary came out and just loved his compositions. I learned a few of his songs on guitar and love them as much as my favorite Beatles and Pink Floyd songs that I play. He was a gift to all of us. Too bad that there were evil people that held this wonderful talent back from us. RIP Master!!

My first impression of his music was that it was too honest for commercial production and he was too honest/sensitive for that kind of commercial music life. Some artists will be sucked dry by lawyers and contracts and agents and demands for hit songs and booking offices. He was the kind of guy who would never tolerate Ticketmaster and would prefer to busk on the street for spare change because it's more honest. If he had stayed in show business he probably wouldn't have survived the '70s. Today we would call what he did a mental health break. But his lasted 25 years. Wise man.

Saw him relatively recently. He performed backwards, that is to say he first appeared on stage overdressed, unrecognisable. As the show progressed he removed an item of clothing. Towards the end he'd stripped down to how he dressed way back when; black jeans, black vest and top hat. The crowd went berserk at the retro-transmogrification. To me, it was a buzz to pick up what was happening. Rest in forever peace. You came good.
