Super helpful… thank you. Especially the tip on distance from vise/heat sink and also the tip about difference between weldable steel vs. the other option in terms of length of time it takes to get it hot enough to bend.
Thanks for this video. I like the idea of mounting your metal vice on a piece of plywood. When I go to the hardware store for the map gas and the metal rod, I will make sure to pick up a grabby thing or two. Thanks for that reminder.
I spent 20 minutes heating my steel short sword with the blue propane but could not get it to glow red. What am I doing wrong? I am trying to harden it and need it to glow red until it loses its magnetic properties before I quench it. Can you offer any advice?

Ya, advice is taking it in to someone who does heat treating. Getting the entire blade to the proper temp and then maintaining that temp for the required soak time with a propane torch is just an exercise in futility. There's a lot more that goes into heat treating than just heating the steel past the Curie point if your goal is a quality edge.
Get yourself a map torch head and youll have that rod heated in 3 min, that tip you have there isnt designed to put out the heat that map is intended to put out
Insightful and helpful video! Can you possibly tell me where I can get a clamp adapter that fits in a workbench hole? I already have enough clamps so I'm hoping it's some type of attachment rather than a special clamp. Thanks much!
Hi I want to bent 3/4 round bar and I have propane bottles is there a torch I can buy that would go on the bottle so I can bend the bar Thank you for any advice Regards Steve UK London

Hey, a really GOOD butane torch can humiliate a propane or even map. Don't believe me? Look up portable bunsen burners. Check out the Bradley, should you see it around. It'll melt borosilicate without batting an eyelash, turned all the way up.
I can't remember: did he say "Grab that with your hand" or "Don't grab that with your hand" ? Kidding aside, nice video. The metal vise on a board has worked well for me. Also I like that you're bending the metal in connection with a shaving horse.
@@Fetherko that has literally nothing to do with why there's no MAPP anymore. The company that made it closed, and it's still under patent until 2028... original mapp was perfectly safe. This new map/pro shit only uses the word map for marketing.
@@Fetherkothat has literally nothing to do with why MAPP isn't around anymore. The company that made it closed, and it's still under patent until 2028. Original mapp was perfectly safe. This new map/pro stuff only uses map in it's name for marketing. It's nothing like mapp.
10 minutes is deplorable next time insulate your vice with 2 pieces of 0.75-1.5 inch boards to avoid heat transfer because the vice is still going to suck up heat unless you can heat the metal to the bending temperature before it reaches the end of the pipe I bet that vice was atleast 400 degrees
That's not MAPP. That's map/pro. They stopped making mapp in like 2008. Map/pro only burns 130° hotter than propane, which for shit like this isn't really gonna make a difference.
The same tip is -not- compatible with map gas and non. They have ratings on the boxes for these and a lot of places only sell a single torch head appropriate for map. Ace hardware has a bundle with the appropriate torch head and a fresh can of gas for like, 50 bucks.

Good one. Even with experience, we tend to forget things. Your tips are educational. Thanks a bunch.
My pleasure!
Very informative. Helped me figure out how to bend steel exhaust hangers that had to be bent so as not to scratch the heat shield.
I’m glad you explained difference between the gas bottle and gases.
We're so glad this helped!
What a Awesome Video Thanks

If you have a piece of pipe you can slide over the rod, it is much easier to bend. Like a cheater bar
and don't have to heat for 10 minutes?
i mean that's a lot
u just saved me for my metal work project thanks!
Thanks!
I want to bend a couple of 1/4-20 threaded rods. Now I don't need to buy a forge!

Would this be the same with steel

Yes, the process is applicable. The rod in this video is made of steel.
Paul
Brilliant, thank u so much
thank you
I'd love to see the plans for the shaving horse! :)
I got a mini butane torch it burns blue and hot enough to melt most alloy. That glows red

The Grippy things look like Channel Locks!
Awesome thanks!
I like how he says grippy things😂
thanks
Quick question. Air cool or water quench the rod after bending?
I just let it air cool.
But that’s galvanized… you know what happens?
The fun fumes come out to play!

he said don't grab it with your hand
There is no MAP anymore. Read the bottle and it’s actually propylene.
Polypropylene is a yarn. You are right, though! Original MAP gas was reformulated for safety or health reasons. 😊

You mean propylene but close.

Please! Never point the torch towards you or anyone else. This is basic stuff.
you must be fun at a party
Also store your torch with an empty bottle ….. in case someone wants to borrow it….

I bought the Mapp gas kit and my flame is much more substantial than his…. I’m not bragging…
