Worked great for replacing my starter on my 2000 Camry! I've never done a major car repair, so it took a bit more than two hours. For newbies, word of advice: make sure you have the 14mm socket, because many socket wrench sets (especially the cheaper ones) don't have it. Make sure you have a socket wrench extension. Also, you'll need a 12 mm regular wrench to remove/tighten the power line bolt, as that's a super tight space. Last thing - make sure the air box cover clicks in in the back before tightening the latches on the front. Thanks again for a great video!

At the moment there are about three TH-cam videos up dealing specifically with 97-01 Toy Cams, and this one is the best, because it shows everything from start to finish--granted the finish is just a review of what needs to be done to put everything back together. It's a relatively simple job, but if you're not a mechanic and you don't have much experience, this is quite important. Coupla things I learned that weren't mentioned: WD 40 helps, but not always. A breaker bar is VERY helpful if your bolts are stuck, especially for the bolt in the back side of the starter, because space is cramped so it's hard to get enough leverage. I got a breaker bar for $10 at Harbor Freight, which I figure is good enough, as I'm not a pro. I'll prolly never use it again unless someone tries to car jack me or something...lol!

Nice work good video. I texted you in a different video regarding the timing belt and a crank no start on a 1996 Toyota Camry le 4 cylinder. I replaced the timing belt, water pump, the hole distributor, rotor cap, spark plugs wires, the crankshaft sensor, the camshaft sensor which is the hole distributor, alternator belt and starter. Didn’t get the car to start am getting a crank and no start. I did everything to specs still no start. Any advice will very much help thanks for responding back to my previous text

I literally just did this on a 99 V6. I did not remove the cruise control actuator. You can do this and work around those cables, but why deal with the aggravation? Also, my starter was stuck in place. Nothing a 2x4 and s hammer couldn't fix. Definitely a job easy enough for a diy'er and this video does an excellent job demonstrating what needs to be done. On a different note, you can order parts online and then pick them up 30 minutes later at your local parts store and save money. I used Advanced Auto. The starter was $115. You enter a code that they usually post on the top of the page, and I saved $25. Then there's a $25 core charge. The entire repair cost me under $100. So check your local auto part chain's website and you might be able to save some money. Anyway, awesome video!!

glad I found this video! I have a 2000 camry where the starter is stuck to where even after I took car off it was making a whining soud! Had to disconnect the battery to make the starter stop! I am going to attempt this when the weather gets warmer here in NY!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I put the starter into my car step by step as you did on your video. I also DIY my alternator and replaced my spark plugs. However, I still have some misfiring going on. Any suggestions?
@@JamesJones-uv8qp Thanks for the follow up. By chance, did you apply dielectric grease to the plugs? If so, we recommend cleaning it off and seeing if that helps. If you apply too much dielectric grease, it can work against you.

Excellent video. Very well explained step by step instructions and easy to follow. Currently I have a 1998 Camry with 140K on the car. This morning I was trying to start it but the starter only click. After I came back from breakfast I jumped the car incase the battery wasn't charged. I tried to start it but only click once again. I waited for about a minute or so to start it but it cranked very little and clicked again. I remember my brother hitting a starter with a hammer on the starter bendix and it worked on the cars he worked on. So I did the same thing to the Camry starter and it worked. I hope that it will continue to work, but if it doesn't I will know how to replace to stater. Thank you very much for the video.

Excellent video, my car is doing the exact same thing as you mentioned in the beginning. First video that gave the exact symptoms (multiple turns to engage). 3:00 be careful with multi screwdrivers, the bit may not always stick in the fastener and can fall deep into the engine bay.

My symptoms are exactly the same as yours. However, sometimes it take 20 turns of the key. Lol. It’s much worse when it’s cold. . Although my battery voltage is low in the morning 12.1 volts, jumping it makes no difference. And rapping the starter with a crescent wrench seems to help. After I will replace the starter I will let you know if it fixes it. Thanks
Thanks for watching Michael, definitely sounds like a so-close-to-completely-failing-starter. Looking forward to hearing back from you after you replace it.

Cool thanks if my mechanic friend doesn't get it done guess I will give it a try. Gotta do the valve cover gasket too (probably leaking into the starter).
Question. Does this car also have a high rev after the battery is disconnected, so that it needs resetting? I’ve seen a couple of videos where they say this happens so that the car needs to “relearn” to idle?! Seems here you didn’t have to relearn to idle. I have a 92 Camry I bought and replaced the battery with a new one and was wondering if this is the case on it. Or perhaps it’s an IAC issue. It seems to have a starter issue, so I can’t even try to do the relearn cause it starts intermittently, I have to try it like 10 times.

Great video only thing I wanna say it never set a battery on concrete or the ground it will drain the battery 🔋 👍just a tip always set it in a chair or something
May only need to replace the Solenoid if it is going CLICK CLICK with no motor spin and battery runs headlights on high fine. In a 1981 Toyota pickup I repaired a Solenoid. There are two copper metal contacts a conductive thing presses against when the Solenoid is activated. One of them was mostly worn away and the other was like new. So I put the like new one soldered to where the mostly worn out one was and made a new copper contact with metal from a water pipe and it worked fine after that. Original solder was very high temperature so I had to cut it.
Just took mine out. That was really easy. Didn't see any need to unscrew the cruise control actuator thing. There were two or three things from the air filter plastic case which clipped around it's cable but they just pushed off easy. Copper contacts in Solenoid looking mostly gone at least one of them. I will replace those. May the force be with you!
I have a 98 Camry with 230,000 miles. Every time I want to start it, I have to tap the starter with a small hammer and then it starts right up. I’m guessing I’ll have to replace it, but do you know if the starter can just be repaired instead of replaced?
Thanks for watching and we appreciate you sharing this. That is a definite indication that your starter needs to be replaced. Most will find that it’s more time saving and cost friendly to replace the starter all together as opposed to rebuild it. Keep us posted.

long story but I had to change the wire that connects from the starter to the battery but I bought one that was prob a foot to long kinda tucked it in under the filter will there be any chance of it melting it is not making contact with the engine kinda just floating in there im wondering if I should just strap it to filter or is a 4 gauge wire fine to withstand whatever heat is down there

I need your help. Most of the times my car starts normally, but once in a while, once in about 5 times, the stater is spinning and mashing a slippery noise and it doesn’t engage, And then when I try again, one or two times, it works! I have tried different starters, and they all do the same thing, and then I have ruled out the stater as a problem and I now suspect something else like a relay, the ignition switch or other, causing the starter not receiving enough power maybe once in a while to deploy completely the pignon gear of the bendix to engage the big gear by the flywheel to crank the motor properly. Can that starter slipping and slipping turning noise be caused by not enough power getting it, making it turn but not fast enough to push the pinion gear completely out once in a while and therefore not engaging? But if it was the cause, why would it engage the next time or second next time? I have ran out of explanations, causes, reasons and ways to fix it, please somebody, help me out, thanks so much!
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. We appreciate you sharing your experience. Since you have ruled out the starter, let’s focus on other causes. It’s very possible that you have intermittent voltage coming out of your battery. If your battery is brand new, this is unlikely however if your battery is 5-10 years old, it’s more likely. By chance do you had any type of aftermarket electronics added to the electrical system since you have owned it? Examples would be: * New stereo system/speakers * New alarm system * New horn * New Aftermarket headlights or taillights These are just a few items that can cause spontaneous behavior within the electrical system if not installed 100% properly. These added items to the electrical system can possibly have loose connections or the wrong wiring installed. We recommend inspecting your starter relay and fuse inside your engine compartment in the fuse box. Any type of moisture, rust, or corrosion on the electrical leads can cause havoc to the electrical current. Please keep us posted, us DIY’ers need to stick together. 😎👍

OMG never knew that was the starter. Strange placement and I'm used to starters much bigger and looking different. 😁👍

Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. Sounds like you’ve been busy & learning a lot. Hope all is well.

Examples would be:
* New stereo system/speakers
* New alarm system
* New horn
* New Aftermarket headlights or taillights
These are just a few items that can cause spontaneous behavior within the electrical system if not installed 100% properly.
These added items to the electrical system can possibly have loose connections or the wrong wiring installed.
We recommend inspecting your starter relay and fuse inside your engine compartment in the fuse box. Any type of moisture, rust, or corrosion on the electrical leads can cause havoc to the electrical current.
