I won $3,500 off of $10. I thought I was in heaven. I kept gambling and kept losing. I probably lost about $6000 since then. It's a trap. You start doing these psychological picks in your mind thinking this is the winning bet right here. You place big bets because in your mind that's the winner( you really dont know). I tried betting small but it takes too long. Tried betting big but you just lose it all again. I could've bought 2 cars with the money i lost. The best way to win in gambling is to dont start. Save your money and spend it on something useful. Thanks for the video

Best way to stop any bad addiction is to replace it with good addition ( gym, cycling, running , any good hobby ) . This is more effective than just saying you're quitting any bad addiction. If you don't replace it with good addition sooner or later 100% you go back again.

One night I lost $3000. Then I cashed out my credit card and lost another $2000. Told my girlfriend about it. And she said why didn’t you just stop, you knew you were on losing streak, why didn’t you just stop and cut your losses. I said I can’t, all I was thinking about was winning it all back. That’s the problem with gamblers like me. We can’t stop until we lost it all. Then I look back and damn, how did I f****** lose that much in one single night.

Probability dictates that over a cycle of 100 spins, there will be WIN streaks and LOSS streaks. So when you are in the WIN streaks, you continue until the wind starts to change direction. Then you stop and walk. If you are in the LOSS streaks, then you reduce your bet by 1/3 until the wind starts to change direction, then you resume your normal bet size and after winning a 1% on WagerRoll, you stop n walk. This way you increase your chances of NOT-LOSING.

I completely agree! The second time in my life that I played blackjack I bought in with $60 and was mostly min-betting $10 (max bet $20) and I walked out of the casino 3 hours later with $720. I had such a hot streak that I was basically calling cards and getting them. If I had a 13 and the dealer was showing a face card, I'd hit and say "I'll take a 7" and bam, I'd get a 7.
Fast forward a couple years later, and I found myself sitting at another blackjack table betting $100 per hand with money I'd just withdrawn from the ATM when my paycheck went into my account at midnight. 'Why can't I win anymore?' I kept thinking to myself.

I have been gambling for about 6 years now. I have weeks where I go everyday, and some weeks where I only go once. I usually will have at least 1,000 on me if I go in. I've had bad days, where I've lost 5,000 plus in that day. I've had great days, where I've been up 5,000 plus and have left on top of the world. I definitely have an addiction to it, which is strange as I am not addicted to much else in life. I can honestly say that I know i can't quit gambling. But I've made a deal with myself, and that is after I pay all bills and know everyone will be fed and taken care of until I get paid again, I can go gamble everything else away. I have a very good job and I get paid very well. It sucks to have such an addiction, but I am at least taking care of my family and myself before the inner beast comes out. I haven't always been this way either. I use to lose EVERYTHING, every time it was payday. But I levelled with myself and am doing better now.

@@AArrad that's not really how it works. No matter which game you play (slots, roulette, etc.), the game always has an RTP (e.g. 96%). Each game round brings the game closer to its intended RTP. If you only played one single game for $/£/€ 1.00 and won 1000, the game operator didn't lose a single cent. They'll still have their 4% profit. Even if you won a million there, they wouldn't care because they'd still have the same 4% of what all the players put in. And you know well those are crazy amounts, people put in all the money they have in their life. Some casinos rip off players off their winnings by creating crazy T&C's that no one can fulfill but that's just extra profit, the game will still do the same 4% return and if you won, others will just lose more. In any case, the casino ALWAYS wins and the players ALWAYS lose.

    • @AArrad
      @AArrad 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Solun I understand, theyre thinking large scale, but one way to boost profits is to keep people playing. After I had won a large amount of money, I tried cashing out online. They didn’t let me until they verified my information. So they let me deposit hundreds more but still wouldn’t let me cash anything out for a 3 day period. I ended up losing it all and more. So I understand that in the grand scheme they don’t care if you win or lose, but what they want is more gambling, because the more money that passes through their games the bigger the % they end up with.

I heard of a study where a test animal had access to a button or lever or something that would sometimes release food. When the pattern was predictable, say once every five times, and then stopped providing food, the animals would eventually stop. But when the payout was random, the animals would never stop trying. Seems like gambling encourages compulsive behaviour

Gambling is a waste of time and money. Look at it this way: how much could you accomplish if you took all the hours you gamble and think about gambling and used that time to learn things, make friends, get in shape, and increase your income? We humans get lured into gambling by the possibility that we could make a ton of money quickly, but when you look at it from the big picture, you get so much farther in life personally and financially if you learn things and work instead of gamble. Just some food for thought.

Not sure about the science, but your math is right. If you could play an infinite number of times, statistics says that you will eventually lose all of your money because the house takes a cut. Sure, someone might beat the odds with big winnings but only if they can walk away from the game.

You've described addiction quite succinctly. Someone who has an alcohol addiction will only stop drinking on a given day when they pass out or run out of alcohol - basically, when they can no longer continue acting out their addiction. Now that you recognize this about yourself, you should avoid addictive things (drinking, gambling, etc.).
If it helps, I'm the exact same way as you. I can't have just 1 beer - I must have 17 beers. When I gamble and lose, I convince myself to get more money out of my account and gamble that as well. That's why I don't drink or go to the casino.

Me too, EXCEPT I WAS on drugs. LET ME TELL YOU, I HAVE SPENT MORE MONEY IN One night of gambling than one month of heroin and cocaine combined, and I was addicted to heroin physically. I would spend about 300 on the heroin and 200 on the cocaine. Somehow gambling is even worse, just not physically, like with the needles and icky crap. I am relieved to be drug free (5 years now, whew) but I still go gamble at the slots. I have to stop that now. I get addicted to EVERYTHING! Even food, shopping, chapstick, makeup, whatever it may be. Man it sucks.

Addiction rehab stories commonly involve a person losing everything and then being forced to face themselves and go on the right path. Whatever someone's substance of choice is (whether it be gambling, alcohol, drugs, etc.) the substance is like oxygen for a fire in that as long as it exists it'll likely feed the addiction.

  • @chinfoomaa
    @chinfoomaa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

The reason why the gambler did not leave when he
was up $140 is because he did not know that this
is the maximum win that he will have for that evening.
It is in hindsight that we can say he should have left
with the $140 but at that time, the gambler could not have known that.

    • @ZachGood
      @ZachGood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree - the unpredictability of the 'highs' and 'lows' is a major driving force behind the psychology of trouble gambling. When we lose 90% of our stack we think 'Okay, this HAS to be the low, I'm due to recoup that loss,' and when we're up 50% we think 'Okay, I'm up, but I think I could win a little more...'. That's why, if someone gambles (and hopefully they're not a compulsive/trouble gambler, because those people shouldn't gamble at all), it's important they set stringent, conservative limits on how much we're willing to lose in one session and also their cash-out limit for when they win in a session. For example, a smart gambler (again, someone who doesn't have a gambling addiction) would walk into the casino with, say, $50, and agree that if they lose that $50 they'll leave, and if they go up by, say, $30-50, they'll leave.

This is the key to gambling. I gamble playing $1/2 no limit hold-em. I've lost money and I've won money. However, you need to be able to win to keep the desire to play ongoing. I keep a spreadsheet on my home computer and I keep a bankroll tracker app on my phone. I know what days I win the most money, what time of day wins me the most money, which month wins me the most money, and what dates of the month win me the most money.
You have to track your progress and for a slot machine person, that is not the easiest thing for them to do. I play poker by an hourly wage. I've I'm exceeding the hourly wage for part-time work, I'm probably only playing 2-3 hours, because I'm staying above minimum wage. My hourly average wage for 2018 was $10 and I played over 300 hours.

If you focus on the pain that it causes you, believe me you will hate it, but if you go once a year (even that is not good) but then its fun to do, but trying to pay debts and make profits that will not work this will destroy your life! And you know why because the long terms of gambling will kill a person. For example imagine if you win 5000 dollar, euro or whatever you will say i will make more after a while and you will make like 2000 more, BUT THEN you will go down a couple of hundreds and think ahh man i want that back and back and back so the greed will come out and before you know you will have 0 dollar/euro..gambling is fun for once a year not for every week or month!

Most of the time I earn or win that $100 in the first 15 min. But I dont stop there. We always think were going to win more. Once I was up $1200 and ended up losing all that and the money I bought which is $2000. I was in there gambling for about 10hours. I have done this many many times.

People are addicted to the high. Eventually, they need to feel that state of mind all the time.
Even just ordinary life seems unbearable to an addict.
So the way to take these people back to Earth is a really hard beating (eg caning for a few hours) or taser treatment to prove that ordinary life is not really that bad.
But a better solution is to swap their bad addiction for a good one.

Let's be honest, people start with gambling because their life sucks. Ifnit didn't, there'd be no dophamine rush and therefore no addiction possible. Live your life to the fullest and you're resistant to drugs including gambling. You'll not get addicted and will be actually able to visit a casino once every two years and not come back like gamblers do. At least that was my problem when I became a gambler as a 22 y.o. I still am now at 29 but thanks to some help I was also able to start saving and investing (where I can't really withdraw until I retire) and I was able to pay off a lot of debt. Don't let your life suck or it becomes much harder to give up gambling. Go after healthy dopamine. If needed, gtfo of your country and find love on the other side of the world. Or a job. Or retirement. Just live a little and you won't feel the need to go to a casino so much.

I suggest there is another more simple explanation. Fear, especially for the addicted gambler, is stronger than greed. Let's use baccarat as an example which is essentially a coin toss game. The casino edge is the smallest in the house. On bank it is only 1.06 per cent. But the casino typically earns 14 per cent of the drop or 14 times as much. How does it do that? The typical gambler flat bets when he wins and chases it when he loses. When he wins 4 bets in a row. He wins 4 unit. But when he loses, he bets 1, 2, 4, 8 units or 15 units. In other words, his average winning bet will always be less than his average winning bet, because he never bets its up when he's winning. He only bets it up when he's losing.

    • @ZachGood

I would suggest using geometric progression when you loose. After one loss - 4 days of not gambling. After second loss - 16 days of not gambling and so on. If you win, go one step down. You could get addicted to postponing your reward ;)

  • @randyfoltin7030

It's interesting that the heroin analogy was used. And in referencing the gambler's "high", it's exactly consistent with the dopamine high that drugs produce, but what's incredible is that the gambling "near misses" produces the same dopamine affect. So along with fewer wins as this random number generator produced, even the "near misses" were giving the same dopamine high as the small number of wins, and thus guaranteeing a downward spiral whether slow or fast. Gaming machines are even programmed at a certain rate to produce a disproportionately higher rate of near misses at the discretion of the machine owner. The programmer simply complies.

I'm not a licensed mental health professional, so I can't make a determination as to whether or not you have a gambling addiction (and even if I were licensed, I'd need much more information to determine whether or not you have a gambling addiction). That said, here's what's true: if you put that $300 in the bank each week, in a year you'd have $15,000 guaranteed. As they say in Rounders, "You can't lose what you don't put in the middle." Do you track your ongoing +/- from your gambling sessions? I'll bet that if you did, you'd probably see that you lose a few grand out of that $15,000. Essentially, that difference is, at the least, an entertainment fee for you.
But let's look at the even bigger picture. At the end of a year, let's say you lose $2,000 gambling (so you have $13,000 instead of $15,000). What do you have to show for those hundreds of hours you spent gambling? Just a bunch of stories about the big win you had or the big loss you had. You have no greater skills or life experiences as a result of that time. The money lost is replaceable, but the time lost is irreplaceable.
If you win money in the long-run, the fact still remains that from all the time you spent gambling the only skills/knowledge you learned is perhaps some probability/math and just a bunch of stories about wins and losses. If you spent all those hours learning a new trade or skill, imagine how much farther along you'd be? Perhaps you'd be making $1,200 a week or $2,000 a week?
What I'm saying is, you should start betting on yourself. It'll pay off financially and socially in a way gambling never could.

I won 19,000 pounds starting from 500 quid.
Thought that would have been the cut of point but it got much worse. Eventually I lost it All, Then kept borrowing and borrowing to win some of it back and now I’m in the shit and have load of debt.
Went from hero to zero real quick.

I don't understand this... I only play slots to get wins. Once im over 100 I cash out and move to the next machine.
By contrast no matter how much I'm up, if I lose 100 bucks I call it a day and leave.
I though people play to win more cash. Leaving when you are up is a key rule or don't even bother playing.

Degenerate gamblers don't set limits (or they set limits and break them). Before they walk into the casino, they tell themselves they'll leave when they're up a couple hundred bucks, but then they go up a couple hundred bucks and get a rush and keep playing. It's like of like an alcoholic cracking open their first beer while telling themselves 'I'm only gonna have 3 tonight'. Once in the moment, the plan goes out the window. I know these things from experience!

@@ZachGood - Jesus... GREAT video. I needed to watch this video for sure. Closure and perspective are they two best words that come to mind.
If I ever find myself doing the things in the video, I will already know that I've crossed that line. Even under the guise of being positive and hopeful for the win, I feel nervous and anxious as hell when I've lost down to my limit.
That tells me this gambling life ain't for me. Lol

well it is still about winning money. If I asked you if you wanted to win 150 or 15,000 what would you pick? Some addicted gamblers dont understand things like odds to know why if they keep playing they will never reach the 15,000 from the 150, but probably lose the 150

Hilarious I used to watch a guy playing the fruit machines he had pound coins stacked up on the machine , about 300 he neatly put them in stacks of 20 looking really pleased with himself that he'd won a little , 40 mins later he had none and was at the cash point getting more money out , eight hours later over the eight hours he went to cashpoint about five times so I assume he lost loads

Slot machines are the worst games to play in a casino. You hit a 1:4 outcome and basically only win your money back. People who play them are blinded by the jackpots.

You got the high rollers who bet more than their bank roll. Those would be the problem gamblers compared to a volatility player who player small but with a higher bank roll. Both are bad but the smaller bets have more chances of winning.

I've been gambling for some time now and its a hard thing to stop. Ive lost a lot of money and my mind is always thinking about the next pay check I get. I use it on my addiction and squander it all until I'm left with nothing. Then i realise that I've spent the money for rent and get so angry with myself. I've taken a few loans of some banks and friends kindly lended me money which goes straight into my addiction

Sounds like it would be wise to contact some kind of mental health counselor or addiction specialist. We all need to be in control of our decisions, but right now it sounds like your addiction is making the decisions for you.

This might be the case in once instance, but I think the highest profits for casinos come from people chasing their losses. Where it really is about winning back your money and leaving, most don’t leave though because they have that high that forces them to put in another bet.

Worst thing that happened to me is I won 8K within a month of when I started gambling. Was up 20K at one point, but that didn't matter. I was invincible then. Fast forward 5years and down 40K. Trust me, if I ever get back to even *I will quit*. Just can't get on that 8K streak like I did when I didn't know any better. I wish I could go back 5 years ago and punch myself in the stomach.

Hey @The Rock I want to warn you that your mindset is going to ruin you for life. You think you want to get even but when you do you will end up loosing again. Your wish about getting even was all I ever wanted in my life over 10 years of my life all I said to myself was if I get even I quit and I hate this. That was my plan and hope every single time I went into a casino. Guess how many times I broke even? Exactly 8 times over 10 years, and I actually won back all my losses and made a profit every of those 8 times atleast 10k profit. And I'm talking big amounts like the smallest recoup of losses would be at least 10 times of your lifetime losses you mentioned in your post. If I had walked out of any of those 8 instances not only would my slate be cleaned but I would have walked away with $10k or sometimes even $30k over the $300k+ I've lost (I'm talking Australian dollars so it's pretty close to USD rate). And guess what? I've never walked away and I would tell myself the lie that yes it would be next time, I made a mistake but next time I break even I will walk away because now I know what I shouldn't do and after all I only want to break even so it can't be that hard. But mate that happened 8 times and my dream planned even though I achieved and surpassed it never actually worked. If youre young I urge you not to think this way, I am too old but if you are young don't make the same mistake as me. More than the money, I miss the time I lost in my life that I was supposed to be living out there and enjoying. Now I can't get back the time.

Also you are wrong yet, you think the worst thing that could happen to you was the big win. Actually nope, the worst thing that could happen to you is if infact you win back the money to break even. I so hope that never happens to you. If you ever break even just once you will be ruined for life. See my other comment on 8 failures. Cause once you break even and then you loose, you will know ahah I can break even, and I just have to walk away next time. I made a TH-cam account just to reply to your comment. Hope you learn something from my life.

    • @ZachGood

This is very true of all addictions. For the most part, someone who's addicted knows what they're doing is harmful (or, at the very least, not helpful). The trouble is if our brains know of no other way to cope with the emotions and thoughts that drive our addictions, then our brains keep wanting to rely on the addictive behavior. Recovery and rehabilitation are all about connecting ourselves with new coping skills that resonate with us. The difference between addiction and recovery is knowledge and effort: the knowledge of a healthy coping mechanism and the effort to implement it into our lives.

I read all these comments and probably can to this ….. imagine someone that actually did figure the game out and consistently benefit from a crazy amount of perks of gifts, food, and free play that can be converted to cash and still not satisfied. Also being aware of the pitfalls mentioned and have the courage to win and walk away with modest wins and still not being to overall net “ WIN “.
It’s all discipline, the toughest part to master in all aspects of life.
In 2024, things will different. It can be done but not by many but a few rare individuals.

I lost all my money I got 28$ left in my bank I had 2250$ to begin with today and no job cuz i played online poker for a living and havent worked in 8 years... Im feeling pretty fucked i just dont know what to do i hate to want to go to some min wage job but no employable skillset. Always saw poker as a way out but when that went fucked up went to baccarat and my luck there has always been unbelievably off the charts bad even though its basically a coinflip every hand. LIke I lost 13 of 15 then lost 8 in a row twice and that was just this time. Before in my life I lost 8k+another 3k but theres no coming back from this this time. Theres just no way. I literally barely have enough to buy a sandwich. Im just at a total loss.....

    • @ZachGood

All this means you need to change your approach. Gambling hasn't worked for you in the past and it likely won't work for you in the future. Now's the time to begin a new journey - one that's more stable and reliable. It might suck now, but it won't suck forever so long as you take the necessary steps to get to where you need to be. The reason the future looks grim at this moment is not because you have no chance of rebuilding your life, but rather because you know how much effort it's going to take to rebuild your life. Don't fear that effort. That effort is going to lead you to a better place. Be willing to give that effort - starting right now.
