PCGS Director of Education Michael Sherman reviews the influence that strike has on determining a coin's grade.
In this video, learn as you review different Buffalo Nickels. Each qualifies as uncirculated, yet differences in the strike of each coin determine the variety of numerical grades.

This video demonstrates flaws in the current grading system, where a poorly struck coin can still be graded equally as a finely detailed MS condition coin. Yes, we all understand that it is still uncirculated, but a better system which takes strike into account for the overall quality of the coin is long overdue. Many have suggested a system from 1-100, where all of the key factors are considered, therefore a poorly struck uncirculated coin would be much further down the scale than a well struck coin with fine detail. Otherwise, the current grading companies should break up each graded category and label it on the slab. Most every dealer I talk to is tired of seeing MS-64's of the same year and mint that are polar opposites in overall quality. An upgrade of the current grading system is long overdue.

Well my child....habe you been paying attention to PCGS videos? Just saying...coins that were GRADED (PLEASE check me on this cause I make mistakes) in the 80's are already downgraded ×2. THANK YOU. I am learning as you are. AND you made an EXCECTIONAL point.❤

Can a poor strike count as an error coin?

      I don't think so

Actually depends on the "poor strike". Thank you for answering. I'm learning.

I would say if you thought you had an error..take it to a local dealer. Mistakes happen on a coin. Please do your homework cause I would be upset if someone cashed in on something that May be worth alot❤

The poor strike you show is actually from a very worn die. Maybe from the late teens? San Francisco?
