While I completely disagree with some of the decisions PCGS has made on what to grade and not grade, I do appreciate the fact that PCGS is very up front about their decisions and provide this video to explain the reasoning behind their decisions. Thank you for the video.
I'm a novice at coin roll hunting, having only picked up the hobby a few years ago. I wanted to thank you for all the information you've shared here as it's taught me so much more than I was aware of prior to watching this video. I have subscribed to your channel as a result, and do believe I have much to learn watching your video's. Thanks again!
DEAR sir. I was on 101 I believe and I seriously loved the KNOWLEDGE. AND THANK you gentleman for the 55 minute of KNOWLEDGE. This is the hardest occupation in.the world. Well done.! EXCECTIONAL VIDEO OF KNOWLEDGE! ❤
I just got Done watching this Video Between switching put parts on a Fanuc Series Oi -MD at work it Literally made my Day learning and getting Paid at the Same Time
I've been watching alotta videos of people getting coins back from grading @ pcgs,as I'm waiting on my 1st batch I sent off .I'm hoping for some good grades, w/ none coming back ungradeable .I even sent off a 2cnd batch for grading,a couple wks ago. This video was reassuring of pcgs' grading quality.
You'd be surprised how many people would still buy many of these coins even with their "damaged" surfaces. Many of these coins are still great examples for a much more affordable price. Grading isn't everything for all coin collectors, especially the younger generation.
I'm relatively new to collecting and all things coin but I'm a quick learner. My collection is already ok for he amount of time and money I have had(very little). Get use to seeing me more often.
+ PCGScoin - You mention that the overarching grading philosophy allows buyers to purchase or trade coins _sight unseen_. The idea is nice, but in practice, PCGS net grades for negative eye appeal specifically for fingerprints. For instance, if I were to compare a slabbed MS-64 coin and an obviously fingerprinted coin that's toned over with the same grade, how would the buyer treat the two? In most cases, I would say that the former is preferred over the latter. In fact, the idea of body bagging heavily and darkly toned coins based on subjective eye appeal is iffy at best. There's no real damage to the coin and the only thing that would prevent it from receiving a proper grade may simply be a minimal amount of conservation.
Sir these videos are great help. Trying to get my coins ready to send in at the first of the month when I get the money. I've been using the coin tape on the coin holders.. I'm just learning but I'm trying to put as much detail about each coin holders as possible. But I believe I can fall in the program and get it done.
In regards to Jewelry pieces we have the following no grades all under damage: Mounted, Mount Removed, and Ex. Jewelry. We also have pieces that fall under the categories of repaired, edge repaired, and cleaned that all could have been ex. Jewelry pieces.
These newer zinc coins have all kind of grease, chemical spots (not carbon spots black) i got high ms coins that have blueish looking spots not including blisters on both sides but a very beautiful coin!!
I found a 2005 Roosevelt dime with 2 Ps. The second one is wedged just on the edge of his neck. Its kinda thick and pulled a bit, but its there, loud and clear. I wonder if that makes it rare and valuable. Its not a very good grade though.
So let me grt this straight. If someone Sends you a coin to be graded for there collection you wont grade it because its too hard to sell and collectors just dont want them in their collection? That makes no sense. What am I missimg? What if the person wants it graded FOR HIS COLLECTION anyways? What if he has a buyer lined up already that wants this coin in their collection but will only buy it if its graded and packaged? You literally said "even if we grade it and give it a 61 and bag it...no one will want it in their collection.". This sounds like opppresion or exercise of power more than anything else. And if I pay hundreds for your course....what do I Get? Knowledge? Or as a coin buyer/seller will I then become a soecialiist that is allowed to grade coins? Or are you hoping enough people continue to purchase your extended course for the sale of knowledge so you can continue to keep your doors open during a time of uncertainty as you see yourselves becoming less relevant?
My name is Lee , O have a lot of coins ,wheat pennies war nickels and other coins. I would like two sell at a good price .There are not graded yet. How can I get them graded. Please let me know. Thanks
If this is a joke ,I'll play along with it ,for one you should never change a coin ,but if you want to use distilled white vinegar and a little table salt and soak it in bowl !!
I have a penny that has some dried glue in the reverse side if it is there a way to remove the glue with out damaging the value its a 1941 no mint mark the front is in good condition some one glued it to a board I think I got it at work ounce
Should sofen up and start coming off, without really scratching it.. *HOPEFULLY*. Or use some olive oil, or white distilled vinegar. CLR should take it right off without damaging it also.. just put it over the glue part and after 2 minutes leave it under the water and pull it off carefully..
Anyone with advice on how to remove PVC corrosion from silver and copper coins? I have one each with this. What is the advice he is speaking of? Thanks. Great Vid!
If only the graders would watch these videos. I've several examples of poorly struck coins with MS66/67 grades. Mostly foreign, which they don't seem to know what a well struck coin should look like.
I have a Morgan being sent in and it has a scratch on the breast feathers about a mm same on the face . It looks incidental but more . More then a bag mark no where near vandalism. I hope it doesn't get a genuine
I have a collection of mangled coins sorted out from junk silver. It's an amusing collection. One looks like it was shot with a BB gun pumped up to the max. One was apparently embedded in asphalt pavement and driven over for years, with some small pebbles imprinting into the silver (and that aged asphalt was a bitch to get off). A few look like they were stored in Drano for a while. A Franklin half-dollar has the edges knurled over, as if someone tried to make a ring out of it by hitting it with a spoon, in order to make a finger-ring out of it, but lost patience (that was a "thing" in the 60s). Maybe I'll try to sell it on E-bay as "The Mengeles Collection."
i have a 1945 S full steps and i believe it is mint state ,just needs cleaning? dont worry im noyt going to cean it !i think its top grade especially for 45
I wonder if they would grade an ex-mount? Would it just get a lower grade or would it be sent back as a details coin? Obviously filing to doctor it as mentioned is a no go, but some ex-mounts aren't that bad really and in a slab you could almost not see it vs z coin you can pick up and view side on (that might be a potential problem). If it's not too bad a solder job I think formerly mounted coins can be excellent value if you went something really rare you might not otherwise ever be able to get and the way you would view it 95/100 times the mount is barely a problem. Obviously an ex mount isn't a first choice but if it makes an otherwise $20,000+ coin $1200 then it might be worth a shot
Sir all the coin I got so far from the bank .I always use gloves. I put the key dates and errors and a coffee can cleaned. Better ones I put straight in the clip. I don't like mixing up but I have to do that cuz I staying at the moment and then take the ones back to the credit Union they have coinstar . very convenient. but I perfect it as I go.
All my coins are in excellent condition condition but I don't care to listen to someone coming up with excuses why the coin is not mint condition and can only pay a lesser value I got over 100 wheat pennies the oldest is 1911 wheat
I’ll tell you some of them I would not have even known they where bad . and then would have been stuck and I had some of the gold 1908 Indian wow after seeing this now I’m worried because I like them and I would go around and try picking them in graded now wow but they been stolen along with lots of others . Oh well good knowledge to have. Cool thanks
How does scrubbing with a wire brush simulate an MS coin? That seems like a way to garuntee that a coin won't look mint... It's a shame that there's no way to grade period chop marks, I really like the more detailed ones on the old Japanese yen.
Good to know information but if you can't grade it or provide that service a refund in payment should be made if not that's theft. I think the coin collectors dictate the prices and value ultimately. Some gravitate to flawless coins while a heep of people gravitate to error coins driving the error coin value up. We've all seen doozy looking coins graded high selling for thousands 😆 in the end the value of anything is determined by how much anyone is willing to pay for it.
Where do you even find coins cheap enough to still be worth paying to grade? All i see is high priced coins that are raw and priced at ms65 prices all over the place. Must be a rich mans hobby i guess. auctions, online, in the store everyone wants more than the coin will be worth 10 years from now.

You'd be surprised how many people would still buy many of these coins even with their "damaged" surfaces. Many of these coins are still great examples for a much more affordable price. Grading isn't everything for all coin collectors, especially the younger generation.
Isnt it better to "have one"?
Even in rough shape, you can always improve in time... it helps to complete runs...

what is PCGS recommended cleaning solution/method to remove built-up dirt and or fingerprints?
I would love to add that chain or flowing hair coin to my collection

What if you have a coin which was mounted to a chain but no attempt was made to hide the mounting other than cutting the mounting ring off?
In regards to Jewelry pieces we have the following no grades all under damage: Mounted, Mount Removed, and Ex. Jewelry. We also have pieces that fall under the categories of repaired, edge repaired, and cleaned that all could have been ex. Jewelry pieces.
