Lucia Popp belongs to the world greatest singing artists ever, so graceful, so sublime...elegant ❤❤❤!!!!! and Richard Strauss is/was the last great composer of the 20.th. century ...thats for sure!! thx for posting this absolutely masterpiece
Rest in Peace dear Lucia Popp thank you for all the treasures you left us. May her memory be eternal.
Formidable interprétation ! Lucia Popp était une voix extraordinaire, merci infiniment !
Lucia Popp, the loveliest soprano, singing the most beautiful songs ever written. I miss Lucia Popp. I loved her. I still love her. I will know it is my turn to go when I realize my heart is not aching when I hear her "Im Abendrot."
How tragic that two of the greatest sopranos ever, Lucia Popp and Arleen Augér,
died way too soon, both from brain cancer. 😢
Grandissima e indimenticabile Lucia Popp Georg Solti e Chicago orchestra straordinari.
SUBLIME!! One of the VERY few superb Strauss sopranos ever been.
Solti rushing through the intro to Im Abendrot at an absurd pace- even for him. But what a ravishing artist Popp was.
Popp was sublime, rising above this rather heavy-handed accompaniment. It always mystified me that an accomplished opera conductor like Solti often lacked similar skill accompanying soloists, whether vocal or instrumental. Go figure.
What a voice, what music! Shattering and comforting at the same time. For me, Lucia Popp and Jessye Norman are the greatest when it comes to Strauss songs. At the final climax of Beim Schlafengehen (here at 11:40) Jessye's voice sounds like the trombone at the Last Judgement, but Lucia sounds like the angels announcing salvation.
Jana
What a beautiful voice! Loved it
Definitely one of the top performances of this masterpiece. Thanks for sharing.
Although Norman and Studer are great interprets of these Lieder, and Della Casa is rather magic, Lucia Popp still remains the best!
Gundula Janowitz the first choice forever.
I never understood Richard Strauss - UNTIL - I heard the 4 Last Songs -
Musica sublime straordinaria interpretazione...commovente, grazie❤
Lucia was spectacular. What a loss! R.I.P.
🙏🏻
Just so beautiful. What a quality she had and such intelligence and just plain talent. Love her.
A consolation for the end of the journey. Danke Richard!
bravo
Thank you for sharing this rare of a gem. It's simply sublime but then again one doesn't get anything less or anything else from Lucia Popp. Bless your soul dear Lady 💖

Stupendo stupendissimo ❤❤
Since my childhood my favorite version is the one by Jessye Norman and Kurt Masur, but I love so much Lucia Popp and her sublime voice (and Solti !) that now I can say it's a tie :)
I always adored Lucia Popp, but I disagree: NO ONE will ever surpass the divine Jessye Norman in The Four Last Songs. Her diction is superior to Popp's, and her probing of the poems deeper, I believe. That said Popp was indeed one of the great sopranos of the w0th century.
I take Ms. Popp over Ms. Norman for 4 Last Songs......much more understated and legato, which is the whole point of this work. Having a big forte voice doesn't serve the work as well as the softer approach. But. Jessye is right up there, as a close 2d.
Merci infiniment.
For me, the best in these songs is Teresa Zylis Gara. Scandalously disregarded by the music market.
Solti - Chicago, Samuel Magad violin, 1977
Yes, the tempi are way too fast, it is a pity because Popp’s singing is wonderful. Better go to Schwarzkopf/Szell, Norman/Masur or Janowitz/Karajan.
❤❤❤🎉
Majestic!
How can a human being create something like this?
I wonder who that violinist is behind her.
No wonder Solti, Bernstein, Karajan et al were big fans of this gorgeous woman - sex on a stick plus a beltingly beautiful voice perfectly suited to Strauss - what a lady!
from which year is this wonderful recording?
Recorded in 1977.
Popp great. This is spoiled for me by Solti’s brutish, ice-cold accompaniments, and Sam Magad’s nanny goat vibrato. Too bad for such a fabulous-sounding orchestra and transcendent soprano.
Solti ice cold???? How dare you!
