Buying a used 4x4 can often be a fraught process. They're often mechanically complex vehicles that may or may not have lived a very tough life. Obviously it helps if you limit your used shortlist to just those vehicles that score well in customer satisfaction surveys. If that is indeed the case, you can't afford to overlook the Land Rover Discovery 4. Not only does it mop up just about all the gongs as far as new car awards go, but it also makes a cracking used buy.

I currently own a 2016 LR4. I have owned an LR3, loved it. A Range Rover Sport and a 2002 Disco. The LR4 is the best overall vehicle Land Rover has ever made. The Discovery 5 is a soccer mom’s car. It looks like every other small SUV out there. When you drive the LR4 people notice. It’s a beast! It has a classic, timeless style. Huge cargo capacity and seven seats. In New England we deal with driving in snowy conditions. My LR4 has never let me down. I can’t tell you how many people have offered to buy my LR4. The key to maintaining this vehicle is to not skip on the maintenance schedule.
Find a good local mechanic who knows what he is doing, mine specializes in LR/RR’s and change the oil every 5,000 miles you will have years of good driving in you LR4.

Had the Disco 3 for four years, loved it that much I’ve now owned my Disco 4 for 3 years. Just a shame the Disco 5 came along, awful car so looks like I’ll have to keep the Disco 4 as there’s nothing on the market that matches the Disco. Maybe a Defender in years to come but given their prices, I’m not sure I can justify the change yet.

Loved the review - We've had our 11 plate D4 HSE in the family for the last 10 years with very few problems. Recently we also bought a new Discovery which my wife loves but I still prefer the D4 as my daily driver. I've tried other cars but they just don't click like the D4...

Before you consider buying one of these investigate the engine problems, apparently even if it has full service history the crankshaft problem can still destroy the engine,a new engine is required. This fault can occur with little warning

I laughed as you went on about the engine after I had a D3 Tdv6 for 7 years I sold it bought a Defender 110 Td5 then bought a D4 V8 5.0 litre now this is the best version of the D4!
    Good review!

8:11 'Yes, there are cheaper alternatives like, Mitsubishi Shogun or Toyota's Land Cruiser, but they don't really have Discos class.'
No, you are absolutely right, but they do have bloody amazing reliability.
To a Toyota driver, a hard maintenance is filling up and adding air to the tires.
To a Land Rover driver, it's doing all the maintenance and fixing, as the main dealers charge a fortune.
    I've had a LR3 and on a mental score of 10, I will probably get a LR4.
Doing all the jobs myself, and just hope the crankshaft problem, which LR will not fix, does not hit me.

Disagree with your view on the 2.7 engine. I have both engines. The most reliable is the 2.7. Ford/JLR didn’t take account of the increased pressure the plastic air intake suffers with the 3.0 twin turbo. This becomes an expensive repair at about 100k miles.
The engine is in fact a PSA design. It wanted it to a 2.5 litre, but Ford/JLR wanted it to be 3.0.
So I would not dismiss a Disco 3 by any means.

@@Hidegety1 I'm having a problem - I bought my 2015 Disco 4 two years ago with 55K miles, from a Land Rover AD who have serviced it since purchase. I have driven it for two years and it now clocks 80K miles. The engine has not broken, but continues to perform faultlessly and returns 32mpg. What do you think could have gone wrong? Should I complain to my Land Rover AD about not having a genuine LR engine?
