I’ve always enjoyed buying things physically. Going to local book stores is so much more of a treat than just ordering them off of Amazon or Barnes and noble
i'd take it up a notch and say that the more niche a store's wares the more fun it is. You can always find more fun and special things in a specific shop as opposed to a supermarket
Yeah but when you realize you spending more on the product,. Paying for gas to get there and wasting time on the trip, the joy just isn’t worth it. Not to mention if you want something specific it’s almost always better to look online
Malls are simply a vibe, one of the few things that reminds me of the life before. I like malls, online is fine. But sometimes, i just want to walk around and hang with friends. Also the things you can do! Want to watch a movie at the theater after leaving hot topic? Yes! Let's get some ice cream after too, and maybe go to the arcade. There is so much you can do in a mall!
If they are coming back, they need more boutique shops. Lids, Spencers, and Bath & Body Works ain't gonna cut it. I want to see unique items. I'm too poor to buy anything unique, but I can see them, at least.
My local mall has 3 or 4 "asian" shops that draw a lot of attention apart from the pretzels, lego, and movie theater, the punk/skater shops in the mall could have been a big hit with my generation and drawn in a lot of business but they went pro establishment during the political shift and lost that potential for themselves and the mall. Uniqueness in products and services is definitely something malls need in the current financial climate. Stale copy paste stores aren't going to cut it not start up's or franchises.
What’s hurting malls is that most everything there’s for women. There’s not a lot left in the mall for men. They need to bring back arcades. I bet you if they put in a retro arcade near one of the door locations they would skyrocket.
i mean you go to the mall to shop for clothes and material goods. usually at the larger department stores there are more stuff for men. i think you mean that there's nothing as far as paying for entertainment. at my local mall there's a cinemark theater a super large arcade where our sears used to be. kinda crazy to see. you maybe want to try a galleria mall if you're in the US and have one near you?
Adding entertainment in general is good for malls! Arcades, bowling alleys, movie theaters, all the American malls I’ve been to recently that are doing well have these things, and malls overseas have that and so much more!!
about the efficiency issue, when people order online they are typically only purchasing one item that will have to be shipped overseas, whereas most stores have a supplier and order items in bulk reducing a lot of inefficiency.
Ordering stuff online is so inconvenient, when you buy something online you have to wait way longer then if you just buy something in a store, you can just have it right away, i very rarely order things online.
Honestly, thats the big thing for me. Ive had many projects delayed by alot due to having to order items that i know in the past i couldve driven to a store for a similar item
Oof and package thieves too. One time a delivery driver dumped my package in a bad spot in my yard and not my front door, it got poured on and destroyed by dogs.
Not only that, but there's a 50% chance that what you're buying is crap and a complete waste of money!!💸💸🗑🗑🤬🤬🤬 I can't tell you how much BS I've gotten stuck with over the years.. even when I've read the reviews (AI has made this so much worse because now it's easy to have fake reviews🤖😒) and trying to return it is a pain in the 🫏 so more often than not I don't even bother..🙄🙄 I'd MUCH rather see the product and examine it myself before I buy it and try it on to make sure it actually fits if it's clothing because there's nothing worse than buying clothes online and not having it fit and also finding out that the fabric is crappy, itchy, polyester ick!!!😡😡😡😤😤
I do like the idea of buying things and actually seeing what you are going to get. I hate going online and seeing 100 listings for the same product from different sellers.
I'm a strong supporter of physical shopping over online shopping, however I would be much happier if city downtowns made a comeback instead of shopping malls.
I guess everyone has their taste but in my opinion I rather walk in a nice large air conditioned mall than running across roads and dealing with traffic etc.

People in the Montreal area still rush to the mall (pick one, there are many) whenever a holiday is coming, especially Christmas. Sure, online shopping is nice, but nothing beats the feeling of walking into a store and physically inspecting the item you want to buy. Online shopping doesn't come anywhere close. Well, except if you're me and you need to find a book you really want in English!
While last mile emissions are very important, don't forget that Amazon has made a deal with USPS. This means that they are using a service that was going to come to your house anyway to deliver mail to also deliver most packages. This in theory adds density back to USPS routes following dwindling mail usage due to lack of necessity.
there's a galleria mall near where i live that's always full. it's difficult to find parking on the weekends. it makes the world seem less bleak that people still want to go out and shop instead of doing online shopping.
Thinking back i spent so much time at our localest mall and i actually miss going with friends shopping around christmas time, thats a whole different vibe in itself! Our localest mall where im from just went down hill in the past 15 years losing so many stores but the mall where I live now is just thriving to the point that its weird seeing a mall with modern day looking kids!
@Warp2090 It's clearly you lol. Sir/Ma'am, do you know that there used to be over 1700 open malls in the country last in 2005. In 2022 the census revealed there were only 600 open malls remaining and projected that by 2028 there will be around only 150 open malls left. 🗒️📒
My “local” mall is the busiest I’ve seen it in like 7-8 years, but it’s problem is that no vendor wants to stay there because the owner keeps raising the rent on everyone so all the unique stores keeps leaving.
I just like going places to get things tbh its so much more fun to spend a day in a new area than just do a couple clicks and start waiting. It also gives me excuses to try local food places when i'd normally just eat mcdonalds slop or the £8 pizza place near my nans house.
One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of malls (at least in my state) have increased Asian shops. Some that come to mind are Miniso, Kong Dog, and the massive amount of Bubble Tea
All valid and interesting points, but I feel like we are all (maybe not ALL, as the video did make references to it) severely underestimating the importance of physical space. There is so much data about how healthy it is for humans to just do things that seem boring, like walk, or interact with human beings. We are built to be this way, and we should stop pretending like we can sacrifice all of this on the altar of convenience. Sure, when cool new things come out...like online shopping...we think "wow, so cool that I don't have to go anywhere now" without considering the cost to our physical and mental health, and the amount of memorability things gain when you actually DO them, not pretend to. If you have heard of a thing called "memory palaces", it becomes clear how important physical spaces are for memory. Basically, I am just reiterating some of the points in this video
Malls can also have different things to do now. In my favorite one there's a Round 1 that has an arcade, bowling, pool, and karaoke, there's a movie theater though it needs better seats, there's a Legoland Discovery Center with a Lego store up front, a really cool Bass Pro Shop called Outdoor World, and a Rainforest cafe which has some neat aquariums and water features. Another part of malls coming back is having a lot of stuff to do under one roof.
I love going to malls mostly for the reason of just striking up a conversation with a cashier, me and my friends had a decently fun convo with a game stop employee after we had watched Across The Spider-Verse, and another time where I talked to a Spencer’s employee about Alien Romulus, it’s just fun to meet new people even if they’re not meant to stay in your life for very long
huge resurgance in my local mall recently, last time I went I was actually suprised with how full it was even had some new stores I think alot of people feel this way now.
10:23 another thing is that you care more about what you buy and you’re less likely to throw it out when you buy it in person if somebody gets a stain on something they bought on the Internet they tend to be like OK whatever and I’ll throw it away and that’s bad for the environment
It seems like everything I buy or look for gets dropped from retailers. If I want a name brand, they'll only have store brands. If its something they use to carry, they will either be sold out or they didn't sell out enough so they stopped carrying it. I'm probably too picky but I almost always just buy things on line after leaving malls or shopping centers empty handed.
Malls ain't it for me. They used to be years ago because I was from a small town and it was the only place that wasn't home and relatively cool to be at as a teenager since the cool arcade places costed a grip. Now as an adult I prefer traveling because the experience you get being with a whole country is infinitely more stimulating than just being in a mall.
I miss the small local mall we once had. It no longer existed shutting down in 2012 if my memory served me right. It was such a great place. All that remains, a reminder of the past is a food court. Which used to consist of many of the former food locations. Different structure but did house them for a time. Aside from that a solution to help Introverts is to add kiosks where we can order our food and then optionally pay at the counter. Something some Taco Bells do. It would help some introverts slowly open up more.
we are mall culture here in the Philippines always have been, even with the rise of online shopping. People here are practical and have good common sense with these kinds of things seriously
We have 2 malls in my city. Only one I would say is thriving, like regularly packed and full of stores. But I’m glad we have the other one too for a few things and a more chill in person experience. It also has more local small businesses like a little record store which is really cool
What i've noticed is the indoor malls are still slumping UNLESS its a amazing experience indoor, like elevators and multiple stories with cool stuff all around you any direction. However outdoor, dog friendly, family friendly walkable malls are booming. Like all the foot traffic in my area seems to have gone there, pretty much completely to the point the rival indoor mall down the road got bought out and i believe is turning into a similar more outdoor style venture.
@ maybe in like Alaska or Vegas. I dont even live in a temperate area its cold here most the year but indoor insnore, Anchor store? more like canker sore, indoor malls are cooked bro thats why they are all getting turned into apartments and business parks
as someone over 30, ive never stopped going to malls or to stores to buy things even though i shop online. i hate waiting and would rather pay a bit extra to have it immediately, if i can.
The mall in my city is always packed, I wish there was more entertainment in the walkways and not annoying salesmen, but its still bustling. I never believed malls were gonna die. Theres not a lot of hangout spots left, so we have malls. The restaurants at the mall are super good, and some stores provide decent clothes without the sales tax etc
Funny thing. From what I hear, malls are only dying in the U.S. where everything's spread out and they're hard to get to. Apparently, Amazon's not killing malls. Poor urban design is.
I love the mall but me and wife went the week before Christmas and two guys started fighting they pulled guns out and waved them at each other. Everyone panicked and ran to every directions fire alarms went off gates slammed shut and sounded like gun shots I got separate from my wife and everything got confusing and crowded and people started trampling. I assumed everyone thought there was an active shooter I got out through an underground emergency exit and met up with my wife in the parking lot . Cops pulled up and arrested the guys. Just shows everyone is still terrified of active shooters in public places . I was terrified aswell honestly.
the best mall near me (2 hours away thx rural america) before covid placed a new rule that any minors couldn’t walk around without an adult. me and my group of friends were 13 and got caught and the cops escorted us through the entire mall to find my friends mom. crazy bro.

Malls can never be what they were 30 years ago because the soulless products contained within aren't the same.
Hey great video my friend!
I always liked seeing malls. They are really fun to go out to.
We have 2 malls in my city. Only one I would say is thriving, like regularly packed and full of stores. But I’m glad we have the other one too for a few things and a more chill in person experience. It also has more local small businesses like a little record store which is really cool
In Europe malls never became unpopular as far as I can tell.
In your area* Not all outdoor malls are booming. Most people rather be in a nice air conditioned mall protected from the elements.
@ maybe in like Alaska or Vegas. I dont even live in a temperate area its cold here most the year but indoor insnore, Anchor store? more like canker sore, indoor malls are cooked bro thats why they are all getting turned into apartments and business parks
No way, I've never seen anyone else with a Napoleon Dynamite figure. I have Kip with the audio stand.
This video is hilarious because i do "package tetris" in the delivery trucks for a living, i play TF2, and i drive a black 2001 honda accord
was waiting for the shirt/skirt reveal
i would never
This video was awesome and funny 😂
as someone over 30, ive never stopped going to malls or to stores to buy things even though i shop online. i hate waiting and would rather pay a bit extra to have it immediately, if i can.
My dude looks like wataru from initial d, (the anime refrenced at 0:27)
If you come to Vegas and visit the Boulevard Mall that thing is now a ghost town
Vegas sucks now so that's not suprising
Went to the mall a few days ago and bought some tea at a specialty tea shop. It was nice.
Good. I hope people will reject ultra convenience more and more. In general people are missing out on tactile experiences it's all digital.
I had an indoor mall near me that was demolished and replaced with a regular car based shopping center
I love hanging out with my friends and walking
the best mall near me (2 hours away thx rural america) before covid placed a new rule that any minors couldn’t walk around without an adult. me and my group of friends were 13 and got caught and the cops escorted us through the entire mall to find my friends mom. crazy bro.
Hey. I like this guy.
