TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Sony Group Corp. will cut around 250 jobs from its recordable media business' key manufacturing hub in northeastern Japan and offer early retirement packages to its employees, sources close to the matter said Saturday.
The planned job cuts come amid a decline in demand for traditional storage formats such as Blu-ray discs, with streaming services now the norm.
The manufacturing base in Tagajo, Miyagi Prefecture, currently has a workforce of around 670 people.
The electronics and entertainment conglomerate will also gradually cease production of optical disc storage media products, including Blu-ray discs, according to the sources.
What’s actually happening?
Most game and movie replication isn’t using Sony discs, this impacts predominantly SELF WRITING MEDIA Aka BDR etc Sony always pioneers a tech and then outsources to far cheaper external manufacturing. This is no different.

The patent, titled “Backward Compatibility Testing of Software in a Mode That Attempts to Induce Skew,” outlines a sophisticated method for ensuring older software runs smoothly on newer hardware.
The patent describes a system where a device (in this case, presumably the PS5) can run in a special “timing testing mode.” This mode is designed to deliberately induce skew-basically, creating timing variations that might mess with how software runs.
Think of it as a stress test for old games, making sure they can handle the new environment without breaking a sweat.
So why does this matter? Well, the PS3’s architecture was notoriously tricky, thanks to its Cell processor.
This complexity has made it tough to get PS3 games running on newer hardware. But with this new testing mode, Sony could simulate the PS3’s unique quirks on the PS5, identify any potential issues, and tweak the compatibility settings accordingly.

PlayStation Stars has now been down a tad longer than 2011’s infamous PSN outage, with no resolution in sight. All set to break its past record, Sony Interactive Entertainment has not provided a time frame for restoration of the loyalty program, leaving players locked out of their PS Stars points for nearly four weeks now.
Reports of PS Stars outage first emerged during the first week of June, and it took Sony a couple of days to acknowledge the problem. There’s been no communication from the company since, and PlayStation Support agents have been giving players a variety of answersregarding points earned during the downtime.
For context, the 2011 PSN outage lasted a little over three weeks after a major intrusion by hackers. This time, however, it seems that the issue is of Sony’s own making.
We recently reported that players appear to be racking up points for their purchases while PS Stars is down, and shared two backdoor methods of checking points. This has since been disputed by a number of members, who took to Reddit to reveal that none of their recent purchases had been accounted for when they checked their points history using the outlined methods.

I want Native PS3 support, none of this streaming crap. No internet system in the United States is stable enough to support an all streaming future.
Honestly if this patent doesn't mean I can pop my PS3 disc into my PS5 and the game runs at least as good as if not better eg. upscaled, higher/stable fps, etc. then I'm not interested.

@@jsullivan2112 keep in mind they had to natively port ps3 games to ps4 because ps4 was too weak to run em. i doubt theyll be much better if better at all. them running the ps3 games on ps5 is genuinely an accomplishment.

If Sony or Microsoft stop using physical media to push, controlled digital, I'm done with consoles. My collection is growing thank goodness, both game and entertainment.

Activision proved what jerkoffs they are by having the discs for COD MWII and III being like 70Mb, which was basically a shortcut to download the games.
Not to be Devil's advocate or anything but I think max Blu-ray disc size is like 4 gb, and even the newest technology only supports up to 100gb I think, so games like cod just couldn't fit.
Though they should absolutely load up that disc to at least reduce some of the download size, I won't defend them there.

@@99SuperKiller99I’d be very VERY hesitant to ever say that technology will ever top out at a certain point.
We’ve already seen them double in size multiple times, with it starting at around 25gb with single layer, dual layer can hold fifty, triple layer 75 etc.
I think they’re up to 200gb right now but it’s theoretically endless by adding more layers.
1200 terabytes is a bit out of reach at the moment but as the other person said; never say never.
I've read the articles on that, can't wait. It'll definitely be a game changer.
Also im ok with PS3 being some selecting games only, i get it, its emulation, emulation is always whitelist. What i really want is that they allow it for PS3 Discs, not just for PSPlus perks.

What I see here is that there are a lot of people who like to own "air", digitally you don't own anything, they can shut down a server and that's it. And we have a couple of examples right now.
So very true X box was down in UK and couldn't sign into X box live I couldn't even play the damn games I bought off the store!
Actually, you own a contract. Sony and any other stream service stores the movies they stream to you on a physical medium. It's called a storage drive. What else do you believe a proverbial cloud is? It's not a cloud in the sky or a figment of one's imagination, is it? All media are physical. The word, cloud, is merely a metaphor that represents another piece of physical medium, such as electrical impulses received from a piece of physical storage. It's someone else's solid state drive! When you buy a digital copy from a stream service, you are buying the right to stream it anytime from the company with which you sign that contract for as long as the service exists. This means for as long as the stream service maintains those drives--physical media.
Dude, Sony actually opened a new factory on Brazil in march to make more PS5 discs. Same with movies, Sony actually close a deal to make Disney, Lions Gate and New Line movies and shows BD and 4k Discs.

@@Cyborg647 That was "recordable media" factory: DVD-R, BD-R, the old blank disc to burn things in your pc. Movies and Games are printed discs, and as far as i know sony make those in mexico right now.
That's for Brazilians only, otherwise the import fees would price everything way out of range of the average buyer there. Brazil has ridiculous laws when it comes to this stuff. It's to force you to build a factory there and hire Brazilians.
I don’t mind digital if they would make it worth it. They need to be like $10 cheaper. They have to pay nothing to sell a digital game unlike manufacturing a disk.
Storefront emulated backwards compatibility is alright, but if I can play my actual disc when the feature drops, then I will be excited

PS needs to be fully backwards compatible with all PS discs if Playstation go's all digital they will lose many sales (we are tired of them invalidating our rights we buy games not rent them so we do own them we want our 1.00 versions on disc without pulling the rug from under us or pull the woll before our eyes no more BS or Scams

Physical media is important it let us actually own the item not just licensing it until they get bored and remove it from the servers.
I think I'll just get a ps3 because those "select" ps3 games are gonna be games that i have no interest in, i don't play Japanese anime games etc. Older call of duty, gran turismo, dante's inferno, fairytale fights, ncaa football games etc are what i play

I've been buying a physical PS4/PS5 game a few times a month. Most of the time it's from eBay -- lots of great deals out there.
Ps5 will be the last console i ever buy. Ill stick around with Nintendo till they go all digital then im finding another f*cking hobby. Game prices keep increasing and our ownership is not guaranteed for what we pay. So going forward after ps5, or Nintendos digital only age, ill be paying for games. Just dont expect me to buy day 1 ever again. Ill buy on steep sales on steam. Want me to pay full price? Then GUARANTEE I OWN what i pay for!!

@@plm6184 talking of that mostly every game I got on ps5 was half off or more and I have over 300 games Digital only like 12 games are Physical on my ps3 tho it otherway around over 80 physical and 30 them came free with ps3 which was free to I bought myself ps2 for 20 pounds and came with black bag full with games over 50 only 2 them didn't work so amazing deal really

The problem with leaving physical media behind is the fact that I live in a rural area. You can't just download what you want when you want. Satellite internet sucks. You can't even stream a movie or TV show, let alone a large game. Faster forms of rural internet are available, but they are cost prohibitive, especially for a person on a fixed income. I haven't used my XBox X in forever because they always send out large updates. The last update I tried took 2½ weeks to download. It just doesn't work.
Someone better to start a project and hire these talented people because apparently sony doesn't gives a shit
I don't know why it came to mind while watching this video, but I'd love to see a Ready 2 Rumble Boxing remaster for PlayStation. I had it for Dreamcast and was by far one of my favourite games for it, next to NBA2k. Come on Warner Bros. make it happen.

us army used a bunch on ps3 running linux to make a big ass server, it was dropped and they gave the ps3s because sony decided they didn't want linux support anymore on ps3...

I got 738 Physical, PS3, PS5 And Switch so I’m fine. If PlayStation goes digital, that’s the end for me of console buying, and I can play my games.
If they stop physical copies at that point I will switch to PC gaming as the games will be cheaper, better graphics mods etc the reason I like console gaming is the fact I can swap games, own them and get a good deal on ebay etc on some games I would otherwise not bother about!
Imagine a game running on that 1 petabtye disc. Imagine the world size without ever needing to download again.
If sony goes all digital, I'm done with them. So glad I kept all my game consoles and games.

My thing is I need the security is physical media but love the convenience of digital. It's the main reason Ive modded all my systems. Just to have my games available without having to constantly switch the disk but also not worry about losing the game if Sony or another company decides to nullify the license for whatever reason
I knew 360 was crap to begin with when they stuck w/dvd while PS gave you a free bluray player....

HD DVD was a thing back then. Bluray had not cornered the market yet. Looks braindead looking back in retrospective but it was not obvious and did not make financial sense at the time.
I hate it that games and series most of the time don´t have physical copies anymore. I bought every DVD / Blue Ray of a series until they decided not to produce them anymore and because people will watch it on streaming sites anyway. Thanks a bunch. Now I have not only this series but a lot of series which will never be finished at home. And I also love how it looks when I have games and movies / series stand on my shelf. It looks just good.
That stars program is clutch. You used to get points for every transaction including renewing premium or adding $ to your wallet when first started I used to pay for my subscription with the credits you could earn points for at least 3 or 4 payment cycles just from points. They nipped that in the bud quick😂

What I like most about about the PS3 is the compatible support And the fact you can play every game from the PS 1 to the PS2 and 3! I just have hope that the forces of good will triumph and we can always rely on the still very reliable and Very Capable PS4❤
I was hoping this would be about the latest update. Seems to have made both mine and my sons PS5's randomly turn off midway through games a couple of times throughout the day!
Btw when i got the email of the sony rewards has gone down, they told me i have ZERO points! Even though i had saved up to 5300 points, im extremely pissed about this, each time sony has some bullshit happen it convinces me further and further to just one day sell my ps5 and anythibf sony related.

The physical media technology has advanced further... Blue ray discs can hold over 200gb worth of data right now...

Networks going down is one of the problems I have with digital. I hate digital. But I have to be honest, I'm weird because I love the smell of a new disk. It's like new electronics or a new book.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't physical media nowadays just a key?!! The game technically still has to be downloaded to your system. Take the Crew for instance. I bought the physical game now it's just a coaster for my cup. What's to say any of our favorite physical media won't have this happen? It's not like our ps1 thru ps3 media where the game is actually on the disc

When it came to blu ray, it was the ps3 that won the war. Every Blu-ray player was $900 to $1000. People who were never going to game were buying PS3's just to watch blu rays.

Sony could make the PS5 every ps disc from ps1 all the way to ps5 but they are greedy and don’t care about their fan base. They know most people will rather play their old games over the garbage they are putting out now.

I believe it's already back on cuz you're not the first person to cover it but the whole reason why the stars went down is because the credit card was getting rid of Sony rewards the Sony Rewards program is now complete and if you have a credit card there's no reward system ready yet so once that's ready the Stars will go back up so I'm assuming because the credit card cuz I have one isn't set up a new Rewards program that the Stars isn't going to be part of their Rewards program so they're going to have to start a new one and that's when stars will restart

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know if that when when the P3 emulation is active on PS5, will we be able to play whatever physical disks we have or will it be strictly digital downloads? Or will it be a mixture of both?
It's in the work by Sony it may take a year or 2 but don't go higher in your expectations because you may buy the game again and may not let you use your PS3 disc

Maybe they can work on fixing sonys newest problem now? I'm still sitting on this $600 paperweight known as the psvr2. Theres plenty of good games, yes, but nothing is planned for the future, and i can only play so much resident evil and gran turismo. Call of the mountain was an elongated demo and i wasn't horribly impressed to begin with. Aside from GT7 and RE7 the best games are ports... kinda sad. I've found myself just booting up gamecube or xbox or 64 or something that doesn't require 30 minutes of updates latelt

I downloaded resident evil 2 from PlayStation store thay only gave me the first disc of Leon not Claire disk so I bought the hard copy
I believe the talk of this PS3 backwards compatible patent coming to the PS5 is really a push to motivate the 2 million or so current online PS3 users to officially remove themselves from the old gen console of the PS3 and buy a PS5. This is Sony's way of waving and saying "Hey look! We have a new PS5 that emulates PS3 games! Buy one of these ASAP!" But yeah, Sony really wants to let the actual PS3 consoles and the servers supporting them die. That's their true plan considering they were going to close the PS3 ps stores for good like a year or two ago until they received backlash from the PS community. Ultimately, this is good for the PS3 community, though. They'll be able to play PS3 games with a smoother gameplay experience in terms of a more stable fps, fewer screen tears, etc...

Not to mention that when this was raging in 2005-2006, the internet existed. This wasn't Betamax vs VHS in the 80s. That industry was already more dispersed in terms of content creation, and physical media wasn't that important to their business model.
