  • A tool review today currently available in LIDL across the UK from February 8th while stocks last. At £ 29.99 is this a bargain bench-top tool or a complete waste of time? In this review we'll put this plucky little took through its paces.
    REPLACEMENT SANDING DISCS
    This sander appears to be based on the Proxxon TG 125/E and the following Proxxon part numbers should be suitable for this sander:
    NO 28 160 80 grit 5 pieces
    NO 28 162 150 grit 5 pieces
    NO 28 164 240 grit 5 pieces
    AMZN: * As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases made through these links.
    Wherever possible links are to actual products used, but this is not always possible, for example some products are not available outside the UK in which case I have selected something similar.

    Now that's a tool that I really could use! Being in the u.s. I'm not quite sure that I could purchase from the UK. Would it be worth the extra cost? Thank you so much for the review though. I am simply a hobbyist and all of the other machines seem to cost so much! I'd love to hear your response. Many blessings to you.

      Tracy Keaton hi Tracy, the original brand is proxxon and I don't know if they sell in the states. This cost me £30 which is $42 USD and I can see that Harbor Freight do a disc and belt sander combo for $79 so that might be your best bet if you don't mind spending a little more. All out stuff in Europe is 220-240v anyway. I have to say normally this is the other way round, all the cheaper tools seem to only available in the US and some brands like SawStop aren't even available. Anyway thanks for your comment and invite you to subscribe if you haven't already.

    ONE IMPORTANT THING: The carbon brushes gets very hot, and when they do they melt the surrounding plastic and get stuck since there is no metal slider around them. At first the speed becomes interfered, then the motor dies. I haven't found any new carbon brushes yet but I trust that the new will work better with some heat resistant grease or a new home made brass fitting design. After a while your sander will give up, just a tip.

    Would love to see you review more of the Lidl Parkside tool range - I have invested in the hammer drill and handheld vacuum cleaner, both of which are brilliant quality for the price! Definitely going to grab some more when Lidl bring around the next DIY tranche!

    Hi Carl, I have had this sander for about 18 months and it's great for all the little sanding sharpening jobs, with its variable speed. One thing you don't mention is the sanding discs are easy peelable from the plate, and can be stuck to the yellow waxy paper to be used again and a different grit added to the plate. Great review thanks Steve

    Hi, Just purchased one today (plenty in their Littlehampton branch) before I read your review and it seems great so far. I know you can order replacement discs from their service centre, but do know if there is an emery paper disc that could be used for light metal work? If so do know of a suitable source?

      Thanks for your question and for watching the review video. I've only used the disks that I've listed in the comments since I've had the unit. However I can tell you that those disks are perfectly capable in removing material from metals including steel, aluminium and brass.

    Lidl UK have stock in at the moment (Feb 2019) so I just bought one on the strength of your review. I don't actually have a use for it as the moment but it would have been really handy two months ago when I was repairing some parquet. I looked around for a disc sander then but they were all much larger and much more expensive so I ended up using my detail sander and trying to get square corners by eye.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment. 12 months on the sander is a regular tool in the shop. I’ve laid a parquet floor and understand what you mean. This would have been ideal. I think with a slightly more powerful motor it would be perfect. I mostly use it for splines and floating tenons and lately for cleaning up the bases of 3D prints. Made by Proxxon for Lidl it sits within a range of desktop tools designed for detail and model making.

      Hi Brian - no the sander is still going strong and I've got through the original discs and sourced replacements easily. A good few months on, and if they were to update the model before it goes on sale, I would ask that they upgrade the motor. You can stall it quite easiliy, but with patience it's still quite capable given its size.

    I just bought one of these yesterday (so was kinda dreading your review today, luckily it was a positive one). I'm a small-scale modeller so this is ideal for me as I can't justify larger sized or expensive tools that I will only be using occasionally. I'll be keeping an eye on Lidl from now on!

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a couple of weeks use now it is a little under-powered but I get consistently good results and I haven't the room for a larger disk sander so this suits my situation. It's perfect for modelling - good choice!

  • @tobymoate5442

    Never had one before, but upgrading from 'botch' carpenter. This was an impulse buy in Lidl. It's really good. Dirt cheap and really small - just what I needed as I don't have huge workshop area. Easy to unpack and set up. Can put away in drawer in a minute or two....brilliant. Was looking for belt sander too and came across this review. You CAN get loads of combo belt/disc sanders, but they seem to be rather expensive. Like washer drier - compromise and possibly not ever as versatile as separate devices? We'll see.

      I'm not sure how it all works down under, but the machine is the same as the Proxxon mini bench sander and you might have a Proxxon dealer in NZ. You'll pay a little bit more but it might be easier than fronting the delivery costs.

  • @Steve_Wardley_G6JEF

    I recently purchased one of these when they re-entered them (Feb-March 2019) and they do seem a nice chunky little machine. You can buy velcro sheet to convert it from self adhesive discs to hook and loop type. The only slight downside is that it is more suited to small light jobs and hobby work, so if you are a tradesman you might consider something a bit more powerful but a nice little machine nevertheless.

    Do you know what kickback is? It's pretty much just good practice to only use the side that is rotating downwards with gravity toward the guide. The opposite side has the potential if you lose your grip to kick the piece back into the air. This can be very dangerous. Moreso, it is pointless to be using the other half, it's the same paper, rotated through 180 degree anyway.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop

      Great question and one I actually only discovered the answer to today. The Lidl sander is based on the Proxxon TE 125 E sander and you can get replacement discs from retailers such as amazon. The Part Numbers you want are:
      NO 28 160 or 2228160 80 grit 5 pieces
      NO 28 162 or 2228162 150 grit 5 pieces
      NO 28 164 or 2228164 240 grit 5 pieces
      I hope that helps. I'll update the description with any links I find.

    • @woltervandenberg
      @woltervandenberg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "based on the Proxxon TE 125 E" is an understatement. Its exactly the same. I dont know if this machine is just a blatant knock-off or if its made by Proxxon for parkside but either way its bad. The proxxon costs about 140 euro's so somebody is getting screwed here.

  • @TheFakeRussian
    @TheFakeRussian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    OK so it's £29.99 therefore cheap and cheerful, but for shaping use? Sorry but no. The motor was straining with small pieces of wood so the bushes aren't that strong and I doubt it'll last a year. Plus you could see the bed moving way too easily as it dragged rather than sanded. As a minor hobby tool for working with balsa wood for making gliders maybe, for the DIY enthusiast I'd say spend a few more quid and get something better made and a bit more sturdy.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Fake Russian You're not wrong. I think I have commented elsewhere that it is underpowered but it is still going strong and for what I need adequate - though far from perfect. The unit is based on a model from Proxxon who specialise in tools for modelling.

    • @TheFakeRussian
      @TheFakeRussian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for taking my comments in the spirit I intended which was feedback rather than trying to undermine :) If it's still going strong and working for you then great, but I do think the more dedicated home wood worker would be disappointed with it for say rounding over edges or taking down a really tight fitting tenon.

  • @PaulLockwood
    @PaulLockwood 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a pretty detailed review. I was surprised as to how much praise you gave it. I suppose the only issue would be how long they last, but ideal for occasional light work.
    It's good that you get all 4 grits with it, my more expensive bench sander only came with the one grit, which is fine for me. The annoying thing is that they are all self adhesive, so you can't work through the grits, but that's common on all the cheaper models, if not all models.
    The mitre is good that it locks down, but would be even better if you could choose that option so you don't just use one part of the paper.
    You should be sanding on that left side anyway as the wood is then less likely to jump about.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul. The self adhesive sand discs work quite well. Each comes with it's own yellow paper on to which you stick the disc for use later. You have to unbolt the fence to change discs which is a bit of a faff. A couple of folk pm'd me and said theirs was out by 2.5 deg from square too. Having used it this evening putting some mitres on about 40 pieces of moulding I would only add that it is a little underpowered but still capable - so yes let's see how long it lasts.
