      Hey could you guys do a comparison video on the differences between the two Allison series 1000 vs 2000, I thought they were just physically larger but you put a 1000 tail on the 2000 making me even more curious about the differences.

      Eccentric Smithy it was just a dry fit for the video demo so they wouldn’t make a mess. They do soak everything. They also fill the units on the dyno and drain them to remove any break in material which many trans builders don’t have the ability to do.

    MD 3060, MT 643 were good units in school buses many went cradle to grave 200,000 plus . PTS 2000 not so good had to have with electronic engines. The AT 540 ,545 we almost put quick connects on them. We kept one in stock. Of course the AT was cheaper when the buses were bid and they were replaced many times over the life of the bus . Really a nice looking rebuild.

    From experiences in a past life (10 years ago now, so things change)... School buses, at least in the US, aren't actually derated (maybe you're talking about transmission calibrations specifically?). It's up to whatever the district decides to put in their bid spec. If they said 500hp, OEs would package 500hp, somehow... Man would I have loved for that to land on my desk back in the day. 15L in an REBus? Hell ya, brother! Get ready to lose about 4 rows of seats and gain about 12 radiators, but it would be worth it. The power limitation on most buses is cooling, but on a conventional cab it's the same as a truck so 300hp+, the same as any other MD, was a standard option in them. In FE/RE, the power usually had to go down because you just couldn't cool it. Believe or not, you could order a CE with a PTO too if you wanted, though I'm sure you're right that no one ever has.
    Oddly, I was told that it's actually _illegal_ to derate the power of a school bus or emergency vehicle in the US, by way of engine protection anyhow, because if the options are someone dies or it tosses the rods out trying, it's better to toss the rods out trying. I've never tested that beyond what I was told (so a tech may have witnessed a school bus derating in reality), but it seemed plausible.
    This could all be different in Canada too, of course.
    Anyhow... You've found the one school bus nerd in your viewership. Or at least I was in days gone by. Also, props to the guy that did the exploded animation on that thing. That took a few minutes. ;)

    Man that thing's big. I have put a 6 speed 1000 into my Humvee that doubles as a work truck and I thought that was kind of big (I usually work with small sports and rally cars for perspective). Going from the 3 speed to the 6 speed pretty much solved the whole "top speed being ~65mph if you're lucky while pinging rpms" problem and really bumped up the fuel economy. Planned on replacing the Detroit but after doing some basic upgrades to it plus the transmission swap I haven't felt any need. I don't haul or anything with it, it's just something fun to drive around that I can flush out easy and toss an engine in the little bed or something to move around. I've done a 14 hour round trip in it since the swap and it was smooth cruising the entire way with the new seats.

    • @fastinradfordable
      @fastinradfordable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a lot of money for something a little 1/2 ton pickup could do for 3x the mileage.
      Whole trucks that, ya know, cost less than your transmission.

    what aftermarket electronic kit did you use to get the Allison to work , do you know who makes a standalone kit for 12 v Cummins ?

  • @AndrewBrowner
    @AndrewBrowner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    why are they rated in HP shouldnt they be built to handle X amount of torque with HP being pretty negligible?
    im sure they hold up fine with a 500hp turbo 4banger infront of it that might make 280ftlbs peak torque but take a 300HP cummins that might peak out at 1100ft lbs big difference but youd think the little gasser would be harder on it purely looking at HP not a realistic combination but shows my thinking

    • @JordanVH98
      @JordanVH98 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HP is calculated using the torque output value, at least on commercial applications. So... one 400HP diesel will make close to the same torque numbers as another 400HP diesel.

    • @jaydunbar7538
      @jaydunbar7538 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Except the little four banger won't bolt to it, and all of the engines that do operate in the same RPM range. HP is tourqe and rpm, so since the hp max is known and they all run in the same rpm range, the torqe figure is factored in even if it doesn't get a spot on the pamphlet.

    • @fowletm1992
      @fowletm1992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea basically it is built to a torque spec
      But they make it HP rating because that's what the consumer wants
      Its easier to split the difference between makes and models when searching the Web
      But I bet if you actually asked them they could tell you the torque rating of each and every component in the trans
      For those interested horse power is toruque (in ft-lb) X rpm / 5252
      Doesn't matter if its a deisel a petrol electric or steam engine
      The same formula for everything

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fowletm1992 i realize torque is HP times rpm/5252 but my point was the trans doesnt care about rpm it cares about torque, and as far as everyone operating in the same rpm range thats a very specific assumption.. its pretty easy to add valve springs an rev a cummins out to 4500 rpm for extra power but that does nothing for torque

    • @fowletm1992
      @fowletm1992 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AndrewBrowner
      If you were serious about performance and talked to the builder they'd quote you per torque rateing
      But for the general consumer and advertising theyre done in horsepower
      Its purely advertising
      Just like turbos and intercollegiate and axles
      Everyrhing is rated in a round about horsepower even if its a bit irrelevant
      Could prob get hp rated headlights

    Well, it attaches to a lot of engines that use the SAE No. 3 bell housing.

      I believe the Allison 1000,2000 and 2400 have 4 or 5 different bell housing options.

    Thats a really good price for an Allison. A 6l90 will cost you nearly as much. Its making me rethink my idea of a 6l90 behind my 6.5 when an Allison can be had for nearly the same.. What the difference between the 1000 and the 2000?

    Is the 1000 tail housing core required when you ship in your 2000 transmission for a rebuild 🤓

    I had never heard of defeo or xcallibur until I met them at ucc in 2017, they blew me away with their products, especially their 6pinion planetary for the Allison 1000

    Gives me an idea.
    I might paint my transmission if I ever have to take it off the car.
    Probably blue. High temp paint.
