    For those who don't know during the Slavic migrations the Slavs brought with them better farming techniques and tools which spread to the rest of Europe and lead to a large population growth in the following century. It is theorized that the Slavs had such large numbers due to their better agricultural knowledge allowing them to cultivate the fertile lands of modern Poland and Ukraine enough to overpopulation leading to many Slavs migrating south for new lands.

      This is a comedy show, don't forget it. What Dovahhatty does (and is admirable) is making us remember that history has been history only because there strong people making decisions at the rigth moment at the right time. It is a mistake to beleive history runs on auto-pilot. Shows like these help us to remember that one can make a difference, and that is what you must learn from this channel the most.

      @@elmascapo6588 he also made gobernors less powerfull which avoided all the usurpations that had happened in the 3rd century, then he reformed the army into a cheaper army wich reduced the economic strain brought by other emperors in the 3rd century, tried to fix inflation but failed because, well, economics wasn't really a thing they studied back then, he did good and bad but he carried the empire so that it could keep on moving even tho in the 3rd century crisis the empire shpuld have fallen, but thanks to some exceptional emperors it survived including him

      @@lnowne2352 The legions were never more formidable than the era from Diocletian to Theodosius, campaigned relentlessly, and rarely lost a battle.
      Conscription wasn't some new method of recruitment that Diocletian invented, and it was never universal. Pompey and Caesar conscripted soldiers, as did Augustus, and Marcus Aurelius. It was a supplemental measure to man the border provinces, and mainly used on the Gallic frontier. The soldiers on campaign, such as Galerius's invasion of the Sassanids, were of very high quality.

What will seal the fate of the empire in 1071 isn't so much the military defeat, but the common treacherous tendencies within the Byzantine Greek populace and especially the aristocracy.

Islam itself could never be the actual threat, since in eastern Europe and Western Asia, there used to be another unifying religion, called Orthodox Christianity. Had the Orthodox Christians been as united as the Catholic ones, many things would have gone differently. (Of course Orthodoxy still exists but not in Asia Minor anymore).
