South African allrounder Jacques Kallis scored a wonderful 111 as he combined with Ashwell Prince in a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership of 219 in Sydney in 2006
Kallis and the Proteas came to my cricket club one day to prepare for a test against the Aussies in Cape Town. The bowling coach at the time, Corrie van Zyl decided to put him through his paces in the nets, the very same nets where me and my fellow cricket mates practiced every time. Me and a few other fans were standing behind the nets as he was batting and were blown away by his technique and shot selection. Van Zyl was standing close range from him, throwing balls at a million miles an hour at him. He knew what to do everytime and played every rocket fired at him with effortless grace. There was a respectful silence from everyone watching as no-one wanted to disturb him or break his concentration.

Sobers, by far, the best...batsman, medium fast bowler, orthodox spin bowler and chinaman bowler...NOBODY will EVER do all those facets again in test cricket.
Seriously, I don't care where I was on the field, if I saw the legend in action, I would have run up to him and gave him a a handshake and pat on the back. Kallis is my favourite player that I saw growing up and I grew up with warne, Mcgrath, Lee, Gillespie, Mr Cricket, clarke, Ponting, Tendulkar, gavaskar, Laxman, Flintoff, sehwag, Chanderpaul, Sanga, Jaywardena, Gilchrist, I pretty much grew up with the best of all time (exluding Bradman and Sobers) But Kallis was my favourite of all. Coming from an Aussie btw, so I'm not biased in saying that, Kallis is probably the 2nd greatest cricketer of all time.
@@alarmed2542 you are A biased fan then if you pick a batsman over a player who has excelled all the departments for the best cricketer. We are talking about the best cricketer and not the best batsman.
No. This is why that statement is incorrect. Sobers was. Sobers is the greatest cricketer of all time; Donald Bradman is the greatest batsman of all time. So when you mean complete, did Kallis ever bowl much spin (off spin AND leggies/Chinamen; Sobers did, of course)? Did he ever hold the highest individual Test innings record or score a triple ton and hold the record for runs in a Test career? (Kallis could never build truly big scores; Sobers' 365 when he was 22 was his first Test century, I think) Did he ever hit six sixes in an over? Sobers was the first. It goes on. However, Kallis was perhaps the most consistent and dependable cricketer of all time, a brilliant run accumulator, only second behind Sachin during the last 30 years, which is of course genius in its own way. Longevity is a good thing. Then again, second wind here, Sobers has a Test batting average of 57.7 without wearing a helmet against Dennis Lillee or having the luxury of playing against teams like against Zimbabwe, like Kallis did, which is why Jacky boy got his average up to a still very impressive 55.4. Most complete? What about captaining your national side. Gary captained the Windies 1965-73 when he retired; his batting never suffered, such was his eye and powers of concentration. To my mind, the greatest cricketer of all time. Excelled in all forms of cricket. Definitely one of the best batters in tests, only behind Tendulkar and Ponting in runs. 250+ wickets. Could have walked into most teams just as a bowler. And then all those slip catches. A beautiful, classical batting style, but his greatest skill was adapting to conditions and circumstances. He could crash it around as well as grinding it out, and for many years he was holding up a struggling team on his own. Phenomenal focus and concentration.
