After just one season, Disney's Star Wars spinoff The Acolyte has been canceled. I break down exactly why the audience hated it so much. Activism really does ruin everything.

They've never created something watchable. They have always been piggybacking other peoples' work.
Activism ruins entertainment, in the same way that milk is ruined when you add vinegar.
Well said
Hmmm . . . that's how one gets casein, a biodegradable plastic.
Adding vinegar to milk, as much as it ruins milk, can result in a useful product.
Far more and better than results from the inane activism of Disney.
Disney had more activism when it concentrated on presenting entertainment.
For example, Mary Poppins-- we see an independent, capable woman, earning her way while living in a world where she didn't have the vote.
@@verilyheld Perhaps, but I doubt whether people would drink casein, or pour it on their breakfast cereal. The intention of use for a product is important too.
My Grandmother who was born in 1914, lived through 2 world wars as well as the great depression and had to deal with things like rationing. She never complained or felt entitled and spoke to me about those things in a matter of fact way, not as a poor, hard done by victim.
I haven't seen Mary Poppins in many years and I can see your point in the subject matter, but I'm quite certain that film didn't talk down to its audience or come across as preachy.
The most telling way to see the most recent consequences, however, is to see that the stock prices of Disney have gone down and remained comparatively low in recent years.
If folks are not being entertained or having fun, that will be reflected in the share prices and the company's profit. With ever diminishing returns, Disney's stockholders will demand that the company change course.
The Acolyte was propaganda, not entertainment and that’s the biggest issue with “modern” cinema
Activism and personal political agendas are not entertaining or entertainment.
Not even close !!!
Agreed! It’s not fun to watch at all.
It can be, but it takes a gifted writer to make it so, not an ideological hack. Harper Lee could do it once. George Orwell could do it repeatedly.
It's crazy how women say we shouldn't hate and yet hate. So women forget ?
Hypocrisy much? 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
As a woman...i hate this new era of woke crap. Its boring, predictable, unoriginal..it erases or recreates stories of beloved characters and interject themselves to be seen of jumps on a franchise and kills everything that made it loved.
They CAN"T make something new that adheres to their agenda because they lack the talent and imagination to do so. They are also LAZY. Instead of putting in the work to BUILD a new franchise they'll try to leverage the original franchise for it's fan base and marketability. The problem with this approach is simple. One cannot try to push something that goes against the established franchise's known canon and lore onto the faithful fanbase, because they will not buy it. In short, it's a bait and switch scam, and one that the fans see through, and will not accept. So go ahead Disney. Keep doing what you're doing; basically throwing your money away and destroying both the franchise and it's fans base. Eventually you'll drive the franchise into the ground and have nothing left to leverage for your woke agenda. Maybe then, someone else can come in, pick up the tattered pieces, put it back together again, return the franchise to its former glory, and THEN maybe the fans will come back and support it again.
Narcissists are not creative people. Thats why they piggy back off of other peoples stuff.
It is not that activism is bad.
MLK jr. was an activist, Mother Jones, etc.
What differences them from the activists of today was that they wanted humane treatment, not forced diversity.
Exactly. Activitism used to be about improving the quality of life of certain groups not cramming opinions diwn people's throats
We have balls, she can't make us uncomfortable.
I'm not even a Star Wars fan, but a consumer of media and games since a long time, a so-called nerd, a (straight) little boy in the body of an old man (I'm 55). All types of media, and the reviewers and journos, got infested by "me, me, me". But you could remove the "me, me, me" aka woke activism from all of these products, and I still would have to boycott it because it always breaks every rule of every genre. Terrible quality, overpriced, monetized, unplayable, looks terrible but takes 200 GB on your hard-drive and needs the newest GFX card, stories written by iPad kids, RPG without consequences, every product hates its roots and wants to corrupt it, it's soulless CGI fast food, ... And when you don't like it, you're an evil person because "I'm a lesbian and poured all my heart into it!". I mean, it's a pattern: A product goes down in flames because of bad quality, and they're releasing tweets that the character is trans or gay to make you feel bad.
I'm not an enemy of natural diversity and I don't hate people for being diverse, but DEI kills art. Go woke, go broke.
I use Go "Woke", Go Broke because as you point out, there's natural woke, then there's forced Woke
"It's always the women, and above all the young ones, who are the most bigoted adherents of the Message, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy". Geroge Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four (paraphrased).
Its shocking how true everything in that book has been. Wrong think, thought police, etc...everything coming to pass.
There is room in the world of film for narratives that examine social ills and other shortcomings of humanity. That being said, when these narratives are forced into things that are universally admired and shared, it comes off as propaganda. People are getting tired of being lectured both directly and indirectly by people who wouldn’t know humility if it was standing right in front of them.
Actually Superman 4 did a decent enough job but Chris Reeves was supporting something worth supporting, advocating against nuclear weaponry.
@@KonkeyDong968 The thing is, though, very few people actually _like_ nuclear weapons. They are, at best in anyone's mind, an evil thing, even if a necessary evil thing, still an _evil_ thing. Not even the military actually wants to _use_ them. So, yeah, if there can be a Superman who can make them obsolete, everyone is pleased.
I don't care how gay the casts are, or how colorful they are, or how inclusive the casts are. Those all are good but don't forget to write a good story.
There are certain things that will break immersion and ultimately distract from good story. If I were writing a story about people working on an off shore oil rig...and inserted a character that wore a pink tutu and insisted on being called a unicorn at all times...that would be pretty immersion breaking. If I wrote a story about a hair salon and inserted Randy Savage's macho man character...that would be pretty immersion breaking. There are reasons why you need to have the correct thespians for the correct roles...and the correct script/dialogue...and the correct delivery of the dialogue. There is a reason why Chris Helmsworth was cast as Thor instead of the actor that played Napoleon Dynamite. You wouldn't cast effeminate looking or acting males...in roles that are supposed to be battle hardened killers. By the same token, you wouldn't cast the actors that look like battle hardened killers into the cast of a movie about a day spa. It matter if the choices are able to establish and maintain immersion. We just saw this in borderlands. We are seeing, in real time, how an actor/actress can absolutely break any attempt at immersion...with vitriol outside of the movie...zegler...and in the past maslany/larson. Perception matters, especially in an industry that is all about perception. It takes an exceptional actor/actress to be able to transcend and transform a script with their own flair...that is a rare exception. In general, they need to keep their personal kinks from impacting the story. The story should never be the actors/actresses real life issues...unless its a biography/documentary.
@@NorthstarLNC Or, as in the case of The Acolyte, the director revealed it was her real-life issues.
I watch all 8 episodes and have to say it’s the worst Star Wars show I’ve ever seen bad writing, bland characters bad acting from Amandla Stenberg I see why the show is Cancelled
even if...even IF...EVERYTHING they were saying is true, that all of us criticizing it were: straight, white, racist, sexist, homophobic, alt-right, conservative, bigoted, dudebros.........the VERY people they did make this show for didn't even show up to watch it!
I watched all 8 episodes of the Acolyte. I don't care about the diversity. The problem with the Acolyte is that it's a terribly executed story. It breaks the Jedi and all common sense. I think the whole political agenda PR hurt it too. But the story, overall, was terribly executed.
That was the real problem. Yes, it reputed to be trying something new, presenting a Sith point of view, but it did that poorly. We have seen, for instance, WWII from the point of view of a German soldier, and that done well. This was done poorly.
@7:52 the reason they can't/don't write anything new is because they know there is .00000004% audience demand for what they have to say. So to get their self-righteous crybabying (that's not the words I want to use but I'm being nice today) out their only recourse is to hijack existing stories.
exactly this
The intention is not equality, the intention is invasion, territorial occupation. That's why we see a female _remake_ of Ghostbusters instead of a female-led sequel to Ghostbusters. That's why we see gender and race swaps instead of new stories. And I say this as a black comic and science-fiction fan from the early 60s. I don't want to see a black man putting on a white man's boots (Captain America), I want to see a ground-up new character in his own right (Black Panther, Luke Cage).
Even worse, it's pointless. All that gratuitous representation and corporate diversity fails in the very thing that they claim to want: improving the lives, self-esteem, position, livelihoods of marginalized people. It does nothing of the sort. But if you're an activist, with access to an existing IP to bastardize, it's easy. It's lazy. It's facile. And stupid. Not for them the difficult business of figuring out inflation, COL rises, changing job market, health care access, caring for dependents etc. That would be hard. So they ponce about pretending to have an impact with some writing and casting changes in screen entertainment. Sooo revolutionary.
Not suprised it was cancelled considering the shit people speak about star wars
Audience response seemed really good for the Mandalorian and the recent movies
@@gmflorio yup
@@gmflorio cause those weren't woke
@@gmflorioregardless of the quality of the writing, acting, or anything, SW diehards, and it seems TH-camrs as well, are making judgment and giving ratings without even watching it..
Some women are ruining the entire sci-fi and fantasy. Don’t believe me?
The Witcher
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings/ Rings of power
Wheel of Time
You're a wonderful person and your content on this, your channel, is very refreshing well thought out and appreciated!
Good video! But I reject calling them "activists." That's what they WANT you to call them. There are real activists working with the homeless, working in food pantries, volunteering in clinics. Studio execs and social media shills are NOT activists.
Way to put it at the beginning.. I'm part of the LGBTQ community and I love when they add gay characters to sci-fi, like Star Trek or The Orville.. but don't need to have to shoved down my throat
They can't make something new cause they aren't talented.
Jedi fallen order and survivor and Mandalorian have been the only decent Star Wars in years.
I just want the 90’s back! Haha
Is just like the last 2 Doctor Who's, a white lesbian woman and an afro-american gay dude..... Disney also ruined it
You’re describing me! My dad took me to see the original in 1977 when I was 3
The answer to your question about why they don't make something new...and instead try to co-opt/corrupt existing content...is really simple...they are pursuing the male gaze. As much as they complain about the male gaze...they are clearly pursuing the male gaze. That's why they are constantly focusing on content genre's that viewership skews extremely hetero male like star wars, star trek, marvel, indiana jones, etc. That's what's going on with the extreme "narrative consultant" + government involvement into pc and console video games. That's what's going on with a similar push into cartoons, anime, and manga. Anywhere the male gaze turns, to avoid the agendas, they pursue. They want to make sure that the only things we can look at...are their ideologies.
That's so sad!!! I was diggin' the acolyte so much😢😢😢... what a bummer, this is bunkers..yeah the crazynesss of babies with no men was sooooooooooooooo dreadful
Evil can never create anything, it can only corrupt and destroy.
Maybe, just maybe, it's not a good idea to let entertainment be run by utterly unlikeable people.
Disney Plus only gets less than a 10% of the streaming market.
Spending $200 million on something that get a huge audience is just bad investment
Xena and Buffy were low budget and had huge audiences. And they had a gay following
Appreciate ya. Thanks for sharing.
It’s all a balance between ego and spirit. Too much of one or the other becomes delusional.
Oddly it didnt really seem that gay to me. The crazy part is that they were trying to promote it that way.
I mean they have ruined every other form of entertainment so odds are they are to blame.
Welp, they at least did what they set out to do. Make men uncomfortable by bullying and spreading its and phobes against men, so men don't turn up, and they cry and moan and complain that men are "ist and phobes" for not turning up after telling men, "we don't want you". Welp, they got what they wanted and Disney is burning into the ground. Good all round actually.
ABSOLUTELY...... DISGUSTING
Would love to see you have a sit down with Rachel Wilson from the Crucible! Love your work Gina!!
I would like that too!
I can't imagine how George Lucas is feeling. Watching your creation turned into shit time and time again.
It’s hard to say they don’t seem to ruin most things unfortunately. I’m sure there are great women out there, but it seems the one that get put in charge of companies or male products have no idea what they’re doing, and inject politics & policies that ruin them.
Thank you for this reasonable take. Shit has gotten way too weird on the left. I know lots of people feeling that bigtime.
It wasn't women or DEI, it was Disney's Incompetence
Kathleen Kennedy begs to differ.
It's all her fault that Star Wars is a massive failure these days.
She stood up for all things DEI and making everything about women.
@@-SashaAlex- and hiring her was part of that incompetence
If I may, since Dismal Disney went on a virtue signaling crusade, content has gone down hill. Lucas Fluffs up followed suit with WOKE! Politics and entertainment don't mix!
Its not Star Wars its PC war pandering. They can't make a Star Wars with out having to smuggle in a statement every single time.
Simple answer.... YES!
Yes...yes they did.
Well said! Look at the game world also. Ppl are só fed up with the leftists bully's.
yes they did.......
Yes
You lost me when you said you haven't watched it.
If you don't enjoy Dismal shows it is your duty as a Murican to watch it and pay through the nose into the bargain.
