Interview + live filmés @ Le Glazart, Paris le 6 août 2012
its impossible to get tired of them.
I can listen to them on repeat all day.
This is a real band- honest, genuine, not caring about selling out huge venues.
I respect this dude's passion a whole lot. Kind of inspiring me to follow my idealistic drive to have no money and just dedicate everything to art.
+Finn Cottam Art should be free, meaning that nobody should make art only to be rich you know
Jacob brought manly tears to my eyes. His unbridled love for music and artistic expression is simply amazing.
Holy fuck this guy is so well spoken.
I've loved Converge since I was a young teen and it's almost been ten years now. I'm not too into metal as a whole anymore, but Converge always, always, ALWAYS blow me away musically. Their live show was incredible when I saw them.
Everyone in this band is so talented and so highly intelligent. Their creativity is always inspiring and refreshing and they always push boundaries. For me, the best metal band of our generation, no contest but that's my opinion
Beautiful words, it gives me hope, im a 18 years old chilean artist and i live alone like 2 years now its brutal hard work every day, sometimes people just dont understand why we fight every second for our dreams and proyects...but we still do this for life. saludos from Chile!
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I hope things have improved since then and that you haven’t lost your drive
Im not a fan of the band, but this is one of the best interviews i have ever heard. what an awesome human.
He is so beautiful and powerful!!!! So glad that there are artists out there like this plus hes effin gorgeous!
a phenomenal interview. Jacob, or should i say CONVERGE, is a real definition of being a musician. Drive, hard work, passion & sacrifice to do one thing....make and spread music. Not to be superstars or celebrities. Gotta love it.
Thank you Converge. Thank you Jacob.
i needed to hear this.
Love the rawness of the band been a fan since the beginning
alone jacob bannon makes me appreciate converge, even though it's not the kind of music i'm into... his passion for life and music, convinces me to support him whatever he creates
jacob bannon.one of the hardest working man in modern times now.one of the rare few guys around driven, always hungry, fearless, truly independent.never giving up.ever.👍🙂.
This dude is so humble 🙏🏻
I'm not a hugew fan of some of their last records, but I DO respect this band and these people and I always will. Commitment, attitude, and so on are not only empty words to these guys. It's crappy to see that so many haters told shit of this band when they got signed to Epitaph. To me it's self-evident they're in it for the passion after all these years, and man, I'm happy they can make a living out of it, it's well deserved. None it's getting rich in here. Up Converge!
Jacob is the man. It's so true, that with the way the internet is today, you have access to anything. The discovery of countless new bands/music is mind boggling. Before i was ever into independent music or just hardcore alone, i was mostly into the mainstream stuff. Now that i listen to Converge and discovered Deathwish Inc, i have come across so many great bands, but i never have enough time to really listen to their albums. There is just so much to listen to.
You can tell He's proud of his accomplishments. That's so tight.
yes. yes. yes. yes. yes. the world needs to see this.
Nowhere near enough likes to express how I feel about this. Awesome.
that's honestly what ramps their greatness up for me. that's part of what makes them great, it's not so much about interpreting the words that are being said (and in fact there are times where, if you read the lyrics and follow along, and use your imagination, yes, a lot of it can be discerned), it's about the fact that jacob uses his vocals as another instrument, one that is relevant to the sound the rest of the band creates as a whole cohesive piece.
This interview makes me feel good about my recent life choices.
So much respect!
What an interesting fellow he is, very pure
The documentary her refers to is called The Cats of Mirikitani.
I agree with every word you just said Jacob. Respect!
Aware of that, thank you. I'm still spinning "Petitioning...", "When Forever...", "Jane Doe" and "You Fail Me", though, haven't yet get tired of them.
i respect this guy
full respect
and i think jacob's vocals do that splendidly. there doesn't need to necessarily be much diversity in his voice. certain bassists can keep a mean rhythm, and, to a degree, there's def some sort of variation going on. more likely, though, even if there is variation, it's subtle. i think there's def variation going on w/ jacob's vocals, esp. with the last couple albums, but even before that, i feel like there was something of a variation in the way the vocals happened, but it's just it was subtle.
This is an artist.
Respect. \m/
right, i agree. and in my mind, that's what any instrument should do. voice or otherwise. enhance whatever idea the artist is attempting to articulate.
respect
Fair enough. But still, for me Converge is a monstrous riff
hythm assault first, the vocals sort of enhance the chaos.
insightful and very valid. wish i had a stronger work ethic
i respect you to bro
AWLWLB Is actually easier to understand than their other stuff.
a real friendly gentleman to boot...
its not all about making money. in fact, if it makes money, its rarely great music
What i mean is that dissociation between lyric and sound is intentional
Well I do get more used to it as I listen further and further, but still, why wouldn't he make those beutiful lyrics audible? Because on the magnificent Jane Doe record all of his screamed vocal parts sound just like "aaaaaah". A powerful and crazy sounding "aaaaaah", but there are no lines to be heard and there're actually some brilliant ones. I do agree his style fits the music. I just think it's a shame you have to look up the lyrics to find out how good they are because you won't HEAR any.
Anyone knows the movie he told about?
ok i follow you, but that sound brings a new concept to this genre. And when you go with this is when you understand why this band is different to others.
I hear ya...
whats the song at the start
Does anyone know what that documentary he's talking about is?
It say the name of it right at the end of the video.
Those are some nice warm words, but don't you think that an instrument is supposed to do more then constantly hit one note? Take Mike Patton, for example, in some of his most extreme projects. He has a huge bag of vocal tricks and he uses them all. In Converge, Jacob's screams work most of the time - considering Converge's overall brutality and heaviness - but when they need a clean vocal part in a song they call someone else to record it. Which is weird, considering they sing Jacob's lyrics.
Hardcore mindset. Come on people
Doesn't really change the actual sound, does it.
Amazing interview!!! So glad to hear this from Jacob Bannon.
comparing those two is a little unfair, they're two very different vocalists. for one, mike can actually sing. and well. jacob probably doesn't see his inability to hit a clean note as a problem, but yes, an instrument should do multiple things, but if someone has a certain niche or comfort zone in terms of vocals, especially if a lot of other people appreciate it, what's the harm in that? also, jacob has plenty of other things to bring to the table vocally, especially with the last 3 albums.
Buy vinyl. Youre getting something, theyre getting something.
Does he have a cauliflower ear, his right ear? Former boxer or wrestler?
unclematt3 yup, kickbox I think! I saw it in documentary about him..
I got it the first time. If so, OK, the fact is still there - the lyrics are nearly inaudible. There can be many ways to look at it. With the way they processed the vocals on Jane Doe it's pretty clearly intentional. I'm just not a fan of sacrificing the sonic beauty of the words, whether it's done intentionally or not. I'm pretty sure there's a way to pronounce those lyrics and still sound brutal as fuck.
song at :17?
whats the song at 6:00 ?
Kris Tzvetkov Plagues off the No Heroes LP
+Kris Tzvetkov the song at 6.OO is plagues, from No heroes. great intro on this one
5:10 "Plagues"!!!
This guy is a great poet and an even better artist, but his vocals bring a lot of Converge's greatness down for me.
Steve-o, is that you?
MistyEyed777 Clearly doesn't get what Jacob is trying to say in this if he's talking about how they "won't get on anything of value". He's just being an ass.
Converge has more talent and drive than most bands out their and are amazing
The Steve-O of music
he looks like mason verger
otherwise would not be Converge
..and don't you think that this can be intentionally?
I remember reading the lyrics to "Concubine" and thinking "My God, this is beautiful". Then I played the song again. Yes, combining such touching lyrics with such uncompromisingly furious music is a bloody great idea. I'm all for this sort of contrast. But somehow the samely pitched yell did dissappoint me. I got used to it with time, though.
DIY, they're punks thru and thru.
In fact he is a punk without the political side of the punk movement. It's sad...
+Dhieen Most pioneering punk bands weren't very political, just generally honest and lashing out against things in convention they do not like. Black Flag wrote songs about dealing with sadness and Bad Brains wrote about girls. Converge does that. 90's hardcore was also based on emotion - integrity, Shai Hulud etc. Besides all of that, Converge's very existence and persistence is super punk.
star11scream Yeah, so i think i prefer political punk (anarchist punk), its more "true" for me, having a real meaning
But I love converge and black flag so much!
Tragedy, His hero is gone, Gaza are some hardcore bands with a political speech that i love
you were born in 1993 right?
Baxxter101 no why?
I love those bands too. Maybe you like Cult Leader too?
Well, they dont have a good comedian on the jay leno show, so its no surprise that they would have no interest in hiring good musicians either.
MMA
eagles become vultures
oh, misspelling "dummyies" did you in. overplayed, trying too hard.
Sounds like jake loves capitalism. Good.
