Yep that’s the story I know. Heard Bird was cooking him and said some trash talk while it was happening that pushed Doc over the edge.
Bird claimed the only thing he said the night of their tussle was constantly updating Dr J on how many points they each had in the game. When they fought, Bird said he was up somewhere around 32 to 8.

Both of them were great players… Dr. Jay was a superb athlete and gentlemen… Larry bird came from poverty and survived on true grit. Both of them played for great teams… The fight they had was a manifestation of all those things and even though it looked ugly… It was a glorious example of competition and pride

Dr J was an all around force. In his prime, he was getting two blocks and two steals per game along with all those points and double digit rebounds.
He even had a couple of five by five games.
He was a great player for his time. The key part there is “for his time”. In today’s game he would be an all star, probably even an All NBA 2nd team player. But he wouldn’t be a top 5 player
He was usually top 10 in steals and blocks. 6’6” and 10 in block shots! 😳

@@abstrukk maybe it's just that I'm older now I look at today's players as young self serving punk's, no real loyalty to a team or to the city that it's in, just a couple (well, 3 or 4) decades ago it was totally different, name any all-star from the past and they're instantly connected to the team and city they played for, it was like a family, real men keep the family together thru thick and thin, while boys bale when the going gets tough
Just from a stats perspective the fact that Dr J averaged 2 steals and 1.7 blocks for his career as a wing is pretty phenomenal

According to the only ref there, Dick Bavetta, the fight between them broke out because of this, “As every shot went in that Larry took, he went further back and he kept on saying to Erving, ‘Aren’t you gonna guard me?’.” that was during an interview with The Basketball Hall of Fame.
Not to mention that fans could hear him counting the points of each individually ... 42-6 when they were kicked out. If you ever see video of the game he even makes small hand movements backing up that he was reminding Dr. J all game of the personal point difference lol.
Now, to Bird, he may not consider this actual trash talking...The rest of us know that he was absolutely trash talking.

This is not true at all. We have video of Bird telling us what he told J and how it came to blows. We also have video of that particular scuffle.
Bird only stated how many points they each had and updated after every bucket he made. I think the last thing he said before the brawl was "32 to 8" or thereabouts.
