Larry Bird is my nominee for the “NBAs Toughest SOB” award of all time. The guy played with injuries that would have sidelined guys today for months if not the season. And not only did he play, he played exceptionally well and dominated in many of those games.
Wearing a full torso back brace he shot a 47 point game. The man was superhuman! NO ONE in today's NBA would even consider playing a game in that condition. Even if by some miracle one was willing to do so, there's no way in hell they'd get 47 points! They just don't make them like that anymore.

It's just as physical as it's always been. Except for a different type of physical. In the 80s they fouled each other but today they do a lot more running to cover the court. For example, centers have to cover from the paint to the 3 point line now and all five players spend a lot of time running from side to side and fighting over multiple screens.
Bird gave credit to Michael Cooper for being the hardest defender he had to face, especially in the '87 finals. I'd say he knows a LOT more than Redick.

Considering Bird shot threes in the clutch. I don’t think there needs to be a debate. We know who the greatest shooter of all time is.

Whereas during Bird's season of 42.3, the league average was 28.01, so Bird's number is 51% higher than the average. Technically they're both percentages, so it's not really difficult to figure out what he meant. The point is the same, Larry was better than league average by a bigger margin than Curry was better than league average.

Reddick is saying that because he was a shooter specialist. All the contact he ever got was when he was running around tired and guys were holding and bumping him. But he fails to realize if the bigger players were able to actually use their strength like back then his role wouldn't even exist
And it was during those two years when the line was moved closer that MJ made the majority of his 3 pointers. If you remove MJ's 3 point shooting stats for those 2 years the line was moved closer, you would clearly see that Kobe is the better 3 point shooter. But since most don't realize this, people get the impression MJ and Kobe shot the 3 pointer at a very similar efficiency when they compare their career 3 point percentages.

JJ forget the 3pt line was applied in the NBA in 1979 and completely adapted in the NCAA in 1986. Players like Bird and Magic did not have the benefit of practicing the 3 when they were in college or before that. Unlike players today work on their 3 ball majority of time.

Larry Bird did more than shoot threes, he led team in rebounds one year, he led team in assists, he led team in scoring. Nobody shot more game winning threes than Bird. Birds passing was second only to Magic. Watch Bird vs Lambeer Pistons and you realize the difference between physicality. JJ Redick says he can show physicality in both gereations. What you cannot show is the bloodshed, hurt backs, headlocks, etc that take a serious toll on the body. Player today have no idea what went on back then.
Michael Cooper was a hell of a defender, and I've always respected his game, but that respect went up 2 levels today, he understands and respects the history of the game. Props to his passion for the game.

I think the three pointer was introduced in the NBA during Birds rookie year and wasn't adopted by NCAA until 1986. So, it's not like it was something he grew up doing, just another thing to consider.
If Redick was playing horse against Bird, I'm taking Bird every day of the week. He was a player who could make any trick shot in the book. He could make any of those crazy, unbelievable shots that you see on TH-cam today.
The 3-pointer took all of the heart out of basketball. The 80's had the right balance of threes and an inside game. It is what it is, you can't go back unless you take away the three point line altogether, which will never happen. but if you did, none of today's teams could hold a candle to the great teams of the 80s and early 90s. Celtics-Lakers in the 80's was the golden era of basketball and today's game is a glorified game of horse.

JJ thinks the league today is as physical as the 80’s…We went from having a 3-point contest in the All Star break to converting the entire season into a 3-point contest. Gary Payton would have been inside Steph Currys jersey in the 90’s. Now a hiccup is called a personal foul.
I could be wrong but I remember a three-point shootout during the All-star break when he missed just one shot. It's the closest I ever saw a player make all of his attempts.

The NBA changed a number of rules because in their opinion, it was way too physical. JJ Redick played under the new rules. Why does he think they change the rules in the first place?
Also remember that the 3-point shootout in the 80s didn’t have 2-pointer balls in every rack. So Bird’s total would actually be higher if he competed today. Bird’s score of 24 would probably be 28 today and it would beat 99% of 3-point competitors today.
They changed the rules - in particular enforcing hand checking - to make it easier for perimeter players to score. They wanted to give teams with top perimeter players a better chance to compete against a team with top big men. The first 3-peat Bulls were the only dynasty without a top big man, and ratings hit record highs during the 90s. Rating dropped during the early 2000s as Shaq, Duncan, etc were dominating the league. They figured out it was more exciting to watch perimeter players dominate than big men, which allowed perimeter players to shoot 3s unobstructed. Perimeter players TS% immediately jumped in 2004-2005, then teams slowly figured out how to fully take advantage of the new rules.

Me personally, I enjoy watching clips of the 2000’s game (Shaq and Duncan are two of my favorite players actually), but I could see why some would call it less entertaining as other eras. One other thing that hurt the 00’s as far as popularity goes: A lot of the best playoff series in those years were arguably in the conference finals or second round rather than the finals themselves.

Bird played in a different era. Imagine if Bird or any of the star players from bygone eras had all the privileges that modern basketball players have growing up: year round training, better strength and conditioning, better equipment, better facilities, etc etc.
Good point, but you forgot the biggest difference. In the 80's NBA players flied commercial airlines in coach! Think about that for a minute. 7 footers cramming into coach seats on Delta and then having to sign autographs walking all the way to baggage claim. Now these pampered pukes have their own private planes and limos but can't play in half their games because of "load management". In the 80's superstars played EVERY night unless they had a damn broken leg. The NBA of those days was men made of Iron. The current NBA product is garbage, I never even watch it anymore.

The physicality in the 80's crossed all kind of lines according to todays rules, the players even played hurt and the fans loved it, The rivalries were real because they seem to love their cities, their teams and hated their opponents (in a competitive sense) , the league is still good today but back then for fans (just like the players) it was all about our team and our team only.
Now it's more about the players personal feelings than what's good for the team, they should get paid by the game that way they won't sit out half the season if they catch a cold.

The thing I dislike most in today’s game is the phantom fouls. There’s been countless times the defender didn’t even touch the ball handler and he gets called for a foul. So many times I had a confused face with my jaw wide open.

The trouble with 50-40-90 in the modern era, is that guys who take way more threes than past generations have their FG% skewed. See Jose Calderon in 08-09. He shot 49.7-40.6-98.1… but he shot so many threes, that if you take his FG% without the threes, he’d be at 53.8-40.6-98.1.

Bird was much more athletic than Luka and all the folklore about his lack of athleticism is ridiculous. Bird was very quick, moved fast in space and had a standard level NBA leap.
The best thing about Larry, he could see the flow of the game and orchestrate it to perfection, whether it be a pass or making a shot. It ain't about how much Larry (or anyone else) shot or the average of a three point shot or a long range jumper; it's about when to take and make the shot, not just jack-up those three point shots until making it. Just like Pat Riley says, I'd definitely would want Larry to take the last shot to save the life.
Problem is Bird did have the numbers! In the playoffs Bird shot something to the tune of 42.7% from 3 pt range. Curry who many think is a better shooter than Bird(but I do not) is shooting 39.8% from 3 pt range. Maybe Curry has a better average during the season but Bird for his career only took 1.9 attempts per game from 3pt line. Bird has said he didn’t even practice the 3pt shot! Imagine if he practiced it!!!
Agreed. No one shot threes at a high output in the 80's NBA because it was just a completely different league. JJ makes his argument waving around the stats, but not the context by design. This is coming from an almost strictly niche, 3 point shooter for his career in Reddick. Basically what he really implied was that HE was a better 3 point shooter than Bird, but used Curry so he didn't look like an asshat.
Bird used the three strategically, either to demoralize the other team at strategic moments or to win games at the end. 90% of the time he would get the ball at the end of close games. Today's game is totally different. More wide-open with many good three point shooters.
Today's game (with its open floor and free movement) would be ideal for a prime Bird. He would tear teams to pieces shooting all over the floor, including shooting threes. The open floor would also be ideal for his Jedi passing and positional rebounding. Plus, one cannot overlook Larry's ability to make big plays. He would dominate today's game and would be the front runner for MVP.
This applies for most of the elite Shooters of that day who could create their own shot. The defence being so spread out would have been a dream for players like Bird, Alex English, and Jordan
Larry is the GRANDFATHER of 3 point shooters!! It was during his time NBA introduced the 3 point line to the game. That first year of 3 point introduced in NBA, Larry made 40.57% of his shots. Granted he shot only 0.7 3s per game, but it was because of the strategy at that time and 3 points was just introduced. Larry won first 3 points contest, 3 in a row, defeating future 3 points champions (Dale Ellis and Craig Hodges. Larry Bird may not be the greatest 3 point shooter ever, but he is one of the best and he laid out the foundation for other shooters. Larry is one of the best 3 point shooter, and one of the best shooter, period. One of the best scorer. One of the best to ever played. Defense' physicallity, intensity, and hard foul, you can't compare 80s to present era. Back then you can go for practically almost everything. Not player's falut, its just the rules have changed for the sake of the players safety and wellbeing. But for sure one cannot say NBA has more physicallity in defense in current era. Facts!

When the 3 point shot came into the league, it was thought to be a way for teams to make up deficits late in games and make them competitive. It wasn't a regular part of offenses for years to come. Redick thinks he's smarter than everyone else because he went to Duke.
He destroyed the 3 point contest with no misses. That was after he came in strutting and asked who is coming in second to me. If we preferred the 3 point the way we do now, he’d be a monster.

He did things no other players have ever done like play 3 quarters left handed just for fun against the Blazers and he had 28 pts at the start of the 4th. JJ said the Defense was all up on Marcus Smart and 5 ft off of Larry Bird which goes to show you that the Defense was respecting Larry's game because he can do it all so you'd better space him out and watch the numbers on his jersey to D him up or he'll pump fake or head fake and either drive by you or shoot it. It always makes me happy when I see opponents give Bird respect. The 3 year MVP stretch might have been the best basketball ever. It wasn’t just Bird who made it the best, it was also the teams and guys he played with and against. I miss those days.

Today's NBA isn't physical, it's all about 3 point shooting. You can't breath on certain players without being called for a foul. A lot of these players wouldn't survive in the 80's or 90's. Those heated rivalry games in the 80's and 90's were better to watch than teams shooting 30+ threes every game.

I don't know why no one ever talks about the 'Defensive Three in the Key Rule' as a pivotal moment in the NBA. To your point, it effectively removed rim defenders from the game. So no hand checks, no help behind perimeter defenders, and ball-handlers can carry/travel? I don't blame the modern players, but the NBA has legislated superstars into existence.
If Curry, Bird, Jordan, and Kobe were in a 3 pts shooting contest, my money is on Bird to win. He was a storm cold killer, and hit more big pressure, clutch shots than anyone. He even told the other team where the shots were coming from, he was double & triple teamed on 3pters and even shot them left handed, and no one could stop him.
In Larry's era, hand checking and arm bars were allowed which made the game a lot harder. Players had to be stronger. Today, there is almost no defense. Everyone wants to shoot the three and receive an alley oop pass.
The guys back then were not stronger. Now a days these guys train every single day. Look at the way these guys dunk today, that's strength and athleticism.

For those that were fans in that era that loved and watched basketball religiously, know that it was common knowledge, that most teams in the 80s had what’s called a no layup rule. Which basically means if you were coming down to get a layup you got knocked on your butt.
I have seen a few no-look over-head-bounce passes that Bird made in the post, leading to points or dunks that are some of the most amazing plays in the history of basketball. He was a true artist and great to watch as he roamed the floor and was ALWAYS a threat. He is up there with the greatest of all time, def. in top 10

Larry Bird is my nominee for the “NBAs Toughest SOB” award of all time. The guy played with injuries that would have sidelined guys today for months if not the season. And not only did he play, he played exceptionally well and dominated in many of those games.
Wearing a full torso back brace he shot a 47 point game. The man was superhuman! NO ONE in today's NBA would even consider playing a game in that condition. Even if by some miracle one was willing to do so, there's no way in hell they'd get 47 points!

It's just as physical as it's always been. Except for a different type of physical. In the 80s they fouled each other but today they do a lot more running to cover the court. For example, centers have to cover from the paint to the 3 point line now and all five players spend a lot of time running from side to side and fighting over multiple screens.
Bird gave credit to Michael Cooper for being the hardest defender he had to face, especially in the '87 finals. I'd say he knows a LOT more than Redick.

You missed the point. The best shooters of the 70's and 80's would be just as good as the shooters now. If they played now they would practice shooting it all the time. If you remove MJ's 3 point shooting stats for those 2 years the line was moved closer, you would clearly see that Kobe is the better 3 point shooter. But since most don't realize this, people get the impression MJ and Kobe shot the 3 pointer at a very similar efficiency when they compare their career 3 point percentages.

JJ forget the 3pt line was applied in the NBA in 1979 and completely adapted in the NCAA in 1986. Players like Bird and Magic did not have the benefit of practicing the 3 when they were in college or before that. Unlike players today work on their 3 ball majority of time.

Larry Bird did more than shoot threes, he led team in rebounds one year, he led team in assists, he led team in scoring. Nobody shot more game winning threes than Bird. Birds passing was second only to Magic. Watch Bird vs Lambeer Pistons and you realize the difference between physicality. JJ Redick says he can show physicality in both gereations. What you cannot show is the bloodshed, hurt backs, headlocks, etc that take a serious toll on the body. Player today have no idea what went on back then.
Michael Cooper was a hell of a defender, and I've always respected his game, but that respect went up 2 levels today, he understands and respects the history of the game. Props to his passion for the game.

I think the three pointer was introduced in the NBA during Birds rookie year and wasn't adopted by NCAA until 1986. So, it's not like it was something he grew up doing, just another thing to consider.

The 3-pointer took all of the heart out of basketball. The 80's had the right balance of threes and an inside game. It is what it is, you can't go back unless you take away the three point line altogether, which will never happen. but if you did, none of today's teams could hold a candle to the great teams of the 80s and early 90s. Celtics-Lakers in the 80's was the golden era of basketball and today's game is a glorified game of horse.

Actually Danny Ainge was a great player that probably goes into the hof if he doesn’t play on a team with 5 other hof’s. He was a superb spot up shooter, 3 point contest runner up twice, great defensive player, passer and drove opposing teams crazy. Go watch the mid 80’s Celtics. He was a big ass reason they were so good.
The NBA changed a number of rules because in their opinion, it was way too physical. JJ Redick played under the new rules. Why does he think they change the rules in the first place?
Also remember that the 3-point shootout in the 80s didn’t have 2-pointer balls in every rack. So Bird’s total would actually be higher if he competed today. Bird’s score of 24 would probably be 28 today and it would beat 99% of 3-point competitors today.
Those games were unwatchable that's why they changed the rules. If I'm more skilled than you the only way for you to compete is to muck up the game.
They changed the rules - in particular enforcing hand checking - to make it easier for perimeter players to score. They wanted to give teams with top perimeter players a better chance to compete against a team with top big men. The first 3-peat Bulls were the only dynasty without a top big man, and ratings hit record highs during the 90s. Rating dropped during the early 2000s as Shaq, Duncan, etc were dominating the league. They figured out it was more exciting to watch perimeter players dominate than big men, which allowed perimeter players to shoot 3s unobstructed. Perimeter players TS% immediately jumped in 2004-2005, then teams slowly figured out how to fully take advantage of the new rules.

Good point, but you forgot the biggest difference. In the 80's NBA players flied commercial airlines in coach! Think about that for a minute. 7 footers cramming into coach seats on Delta and then having to sign autographs walking all the way to baggage claim. Now these pampered pukes have their own private planes and limos but can't play in half their games because of "load management". In the 80's superstars played EVERY night unless they had a damn broken leg. The NBA of those days was men made of Iron. The current NBA product is garbage, I never even watch it anymore.

The physicality in the 80's crossed all kind of lines according to todays rules, the players even played hurt and the fans loved it, The rivalries were real because they seem to love their cities, their teams and hated their opponents (in a competitive sense) , the league is still good today but back then for fans (just like the players) it was all about our team and our team only.
Now it's more about the players personal feelings than what's good for the team, they should get paid by the game that way they won't sit out half the season if they catch a cold.

The trouble with 50-40-90 in the modern era, is that guys who take way more threes than past generations have their FG% skewed.
See Jose Calderon in 08-09. He shot 49.7-40.6-98.1… but he shot so many threes, that if you take his FG% without the threes, he’d be at 53.8-40.6-98.1.

Bird was much more athletic than Luka and all the folklore about his lack of athleticism is ridiculous. Bird was very quick, moved fast in space and had a standard level NBA leap.
The best thing about Larry, he could see the flow of the game and orchestrate it to perfection, whether it be a pass or making a shot. It ain't about how much Larry (or anyone else) shot or the average of a three point shot or a long range jumper; it's about when to take and make the shot, not just jack-up those three point shots until making it. Just like Pat Riley says, I'd definitely would want Larry to take the last shot to save the life.
Problem is Bird did have the numbers! In the playoffs Bird shot something to the tune of 42.7% from 3 pt range. Curry who many think is a better shooter than Bird(but I do not) is shooting 39.8% from 3 pt range. Maybe Curry has a better average during the season but Bird for his career only took 1.9 attempts per game from 3pt line. Bird has said he didn’t even practice the 3pt shot! Imagine if he practiced it!!!

Bird used the three strategically, either to demoralize the other team at strategic moments or to win games at the end. 90% of the time he would get the ball at the end of close games. Today's game is totally different. More wide-open with many good three point shooters.

The open floor would also be ideal for his Jedi passing and positional rebounding. Plus, one cannot overlook Larry's ability to make big plays. I don't know why no one ever talks about the 'Defensive Three in the Key Rule' as a pivotal moment in the NBA. To your point, it effectively removed rim defenders from the game. So no hand checks, no help behind perimeter defenders, and ball-handlers can carry/travel? I don't blame the modern players, but the NBA has legislated superstars into existence.

In Larry's era, hand checking and arm bars were allowed which made the game a lot harder. Players had to be stronger. Today, there is almost no defense. Everyone wants to shoot the three and receive an alley oop pass.

Hand checking alone makes that era more physical period
For those that were fans in that era that loved and watched basketball religiously, know that it was common knowledge, that most teams in the 80s had what’s called a no layup rule. Which basically means if you were coming down to get a layup you got knocked on your butt.

I have seen a few no-look over-head-bounce passes that Bird made in the post, leading to points or dunks that are some of the most amazing plays in the history of basketball. He was a true artist and great to watch as he roamed the floor and was ALWAYS a threat. He is up there with the greatest of all time, def. in top 10

@@donnas8408 Bird is ranked 36 in scoring 45 in assists and a very embarrassing 62 in rebounds, which proves he is overrated, he's not even ranked 35 in any stats, no one with such horrible stats should never be considered or mentioned in the top 10 or 20 and never in GOAT conversation period.
@@dariussuite1605 using cumulative stats to try to prove a player's ability is hugely flawed as it caters more towards consistency and longevity more than actual ability. A person who plays 5 seasons scoring 30 points every season is going to have less points than a player who plays 15 seasons scoring 12 points every season, but it's obviously the player who played for 5 seasons that is better at scoring or at the very least, more productive

Even the 1990's were more physical than today's NBA! Michael Cooper said of J.J. Redick "all his accolades came in college" (at Duke). It would seem that all his knowledge of basketball came from his time at Duke as well.
According to Redick, Steve Kerr must be the greatest 3-pt shooter of all time.
