Hey friends! First of all, thanks for all the comments and thumbs up! I've never had such a great amount of feedback!
After the upload I noticed that TH-cam does not support end screens in this format. I hope it will be updated... what do you think?
I am not sure. This has been like that for a very long time. If you want end screens (which are essential, in my opinion), you can go as far as 2:1 (ie 3840x1920), so that's your best bet.
I’m on iPad 😢the black bezels are already bad just imagine what it will be like with this
For anyone that needs help remembering what to crop the video height to, just remember that in the year 1772, Catherine the Great ended the Beard Tax in Russia that had been set in place by Tsar Peter the Great in 1698. Until that point, police were empowered to shave people that hadn't paid the tax in public. Anyway, that's how I'm going to remember 3840 x 1772.
Thanks. It was pretty obvious.
@@ultravioletron maybe to you. Some of us just need a simple reminder like the Russian Beard Tax that was in effect between 1698 and 1772 until it was ended by Catherine the Great.
@@brianmarkgriffinOf course. Not to mention, a year and a half before the more famous Boston Tea Party, the Gaspee Affair marked the first blow struck for American independence. The American Revolution began on the night of 10 June 1772 in the waters of coastal Rhode Island. Which would also help us remember about the aspect ratio.
@@ultravioletron ah, yes. Thank you. I had forgotten about this. I'm surprised he neglected to mention this in the video. Perhaps he will post an update.
😂
I personally prefer a 2:1 aspect ratio, does have some black bars but it’s just big enough that it doesn’t intersect with the notch on my phone and fills the most amount of screen space as possible
Agree 100%
Yup 2:1 is the way to go
Agreed. And 4000 x 2000 is so much more satisfying.
doesn't the dynamic island cut halfway into the video? which looks very strange
2:1 aspect ratio has been the Netflix standard for a while now
I was just working on this! Same conclusion! Awesome.
You nailed it.
I’ve always been bothered about having to zoom to fill and any little black bars on my phone have always bugged me. 1772. I’m with you.
The amount of super solid editing for this video is great. And the color grading you did....amazing. Well done
Came here to ask What LUT he used because dang
Ya the color grading is WILD!! Love it
I want to start my channel soon...and this is the aspect ratio I´m going to use from the start! Thanks bro!
Love it and will use it on my next projects. Thanks for helping us change for the better.
Joe 🙏
P.s. I have since used these settings and love the fact you have the movement up and down to reframe! Shoot wider and this will change the way your videos look and you edit.
Credit to you bro
mega Tipp, danke Max!
super nice video and your overall style and color grading is really awesome ! keep up that work
Great idea and been thinking about this for a while myself. With rebranding the channel going to think about this!
Yeah it looks awesome! tag me, If u start using it, would love to see that!
Thanks for pointing out something I didn’t even notice until you mentioned it now I’m scrolling though channels to see who’s using it lol, I’m definitely going to give it a go it definitely looks more appealing! Thanks for the video!
I've got a Sony Xperia 5iii, and the aspect ratio is 21:9 - proper CinemaScope wide-screen, so its fantastic for films, but another really great feature is that you can split screen multitask with it - have two apps running side by side or one on top of the other in portrait mode. It makes casual viewing TH-cam great as you can play a video and do other tasks at the same time. I often have TH-cam open and my notes app below it, so I can make notes as I watch, all on the same screen. Great feature.
Agree. Xperia woek the best with TH-cam video running and scrolling comments on the right hand of the screen
I have been looking for a solution to this aspect ratio for some time!
Thank you 👍🏻
This is a cool idea. Thank you for sharing the dimensions, I’m going to give this a try. Cheers🎉
Watching on my S22 Ultra and I'm probably going to subscribe since I turned my phone to landscape and your video immediately filled the entire screen and I don't have to pinch and zoom! I'll likely use this advice to shoot as well! A thousand thanks!
I saw that on an s22 ultra too!!
Great video, mate! Keep up the great work :D
This is incredible !!!! Great idea and this video was way better to watch with this aspect ratio
Watching on iPhone 13 and its a game changer ! Thanks you !
I've wanted to do this with my videos! This is awesome. Thanks!
I like the idea and agree with you I've been saying this for a while now hopefully people will catch on
wow makes the video look so much better using the full screen properly. We just need our mobile streaming services to start doing the same. thanks you so much for this video👍🏼👍🏼
Du bist so unfassbar underrated. Wenn die Videos weiterhin so sind, sind 100k nur eine Frage einer - kurzen - Zeit!
Ist er deutsch?
@@FlyingEyes27 ja
I’ve always had to zoom into when watching TH-cam videos to full grasp a good viewing experience and take out the black borders. However, certain parts of the videos gets cropped out. I’m glad you’re looking into easing that stress and improving our viewing experience.
Yeah, the only downside is that I can't add an end screen at the end.
everything else is pretty cool!
The trade off is you’re giving so much quality in a few minutes it’s easy for us to just take the next step and sub or go look for the next video.
It may not be as big of a drop off without the end screen as we might think.
Also I’m sure eventually TH-cam will catch on and let end screens be Avila me for this Aspect ratio as well.
That's why you buy an Android device and use an extension that will stretch the video horizontally to fit your phone's aspect ratio, lmao
hey @@maxsautner how come you cant add the end screen video/info???
Amazing description of this, instantly filled my screen when I turned it horizontally
This video format is GREAT on my PC screen. I love that it's almost fullscreen without actually having to go full screen.
I'm glad to see this, and I hope more people can join your idea as well. Is not bad in the laptop, and is simply delightful to consume media in the phone
Tolles Video Max!
Amazing thanks
Thank you for the suggestion. Seeing as 50% of my audience is mobile, I can now look into fitting more stuff in the frame. Cheers.
Thank you so much for the support!
Yeah, the only thing is, you can't use end screens on this format, maybe TH-cam will change that in the future...🤷🏻♂️
That’s awesome, thanks so much!
Great info, will start using this
As a wide screen desktop user, I really appreciate when people do this :)
Pretty damn cool gotta try it!
✌️😎
this is a great video and high quality, well done !
Finally, someone who addressed this. Super helpful.
Thank you.
Great video! I'm going to try this on my next project & see how it turns out
Bro thanks alot men
That's so much valuable
My day was worth after knowing this
Just experienced it with my iPhone and it looks great. I think if you’re intentional with your framing then the Dynamic Island doesn’t matter.
Yeah! I try to film a bit wider or turn on my overlays on the FX6 to frame perfectly
Nice video. Your setup looks amazing. The lighting is 🔥
Thank you for sharing 🙏☀️
I’m in. Great tip. I’ll update my template now. 🍻
Nice video! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
AMAZING! Gonna do this way from now on
I personally prefer 2:1 as my widest for mobile viewing as notches wont interfere with the video and it tends to be the widest aspect ratio without the rounded corners of your phone interfering either. But I hope it works out for you!
One suggestion I do have, is if you think you may change your aspect ratio throughout your editing process, compose your shots with the widest aspect ratio and film in the fullest. That way there are no drawbacks to cropping your aspect ratio afterwards.
So what aspect ratio would I have to change my settings to to get 2:1?
@@viewswithbenyou divide your x width by 2, so for FHD, 1920x960
@@authenticNL2 thank you!
doesn't the dynamic island cut halfway into the video?
Wouldn't he then lose the VP9 codec because it's
This is a fantastic video!
Amazing 💥💥
This is actually so cool! I did not notice but did notice it at the same time lol
God I loved this tutorial. Thank you. 🙏
I think it's more than just content creators adjusting screen ratios, it's also making sure that whatever the shot is, it leaves a space for zooms and crops in mobile phones, no matter what model it is (could also be a 21:9 screen). That usually leaves your hair barely out of the shot, if at all.
I think you're doing an excellent job 👏🏻👏🏻
What are the settings for 1920 to have the same aspect ratio? 1920 x ?
Thank you.
If you do the math:
886 x 1920
hey David! thank you for the tip!
I think its 1920x884, never tried it in full hd...
i like this, fills my ultrawide a bit more
Good idea. Will take this to the clients choices. 😊
Love this idea!
Looks amazing
love your colour bro, and your 'art of thumbnail' its pretty dope
Great! Looking at how the audience is watching your content is very good. I adapted 2:1 a while ago. I mean, it's the same with all the different speakers and displays, your video will be perceived different on every single device. But using the most popular displays and the iPhone is by far the most used phone in the world it's actually quite smart. Since I shoot in 4k DCI I will adjust it accordingly. It also gives you more of the cinematic look. I love playing around with aspect ratio and this will also encourage artist to use 4:3 more often.
I'm going to try this!
Sean Kitching made a video addressing the same issue highlighting that if we film and post 21:9 we lose the yt end card feature. which I found out the hard way haha. Sean suggested using 16x9 at 3840x1920 but I appreciate this video as well because phones are very wide the 19x9 I think may be better at least imo
Highly agree. This man is on to something
Hey Max! I just love the quality of your videos. Can you tell us about yout export settings? We are just arrived on creating videos for this platform. Thanks and congrats! New sub here.
This is great! What would it be for 1080p videos? Would it be 1920x1772?
I find the concept fascinating. It’s be very helpful if TH-cam would also let us know in the analytics how many people look at the video in landscape vs portrait.
And then from a stylistic choice and complexity: shooting even wider + also being able to do shorts. It’s wild what the range of aspect ratios are currently “needed”.
Awesome video! Just Subscribed!
Thanks
Editing in this video is 🔥
dude! i love your colors!
Great idea thank you for sharing 🙂Liked and subscribed 🙂
thankssss thaknsssss thanksssss !!!!
Looks great on iPhone, surprisingly so. Watched this again on Apple TV @4k and the black bars and bottom doesn’t look too bad. You almost expect black bars on the big screen more so than on your phone.
Great video, thank you. I tried this after watching, and all I can add is if you want people to watch on their TVs or computers, then this resolution is a big no. I would add that if you produce in this resolution (1772) and show it on a phone, it's great, but on a computer monitor or TV is terrible, with black bars at the sides. If you produce in 16:9, then. yes, it's not full screen on a phone, but you at least do not get black on the sides. It's the better workaround, in my humble opinion, after trying it.
This applies to shorts as well, the vertical 4K gets cut off on the sides, i use an overlay template in premiere pro to show what area is cut off or blocked on shorts on mobile so nothing important gets cut off or blocked, but i think i am going to change the 1920 to 1772 on my vertical format also so it is not cropped. Larry
Very good point
Another point is that if you shoot anamorphic, you're pretty much bound to a wide aspect ratio as you capture the footage. No reason to shoot anamorphic and then just loose those sweet wide compositions for 16x9 output ratio. Great video!
Danke, guter Aspekt 😎
Never noticed until your video. I like this aspect
Thanks Max, subscribed.
How you only have 4300 subscribers is a mystery and tragedy. Your videos are excellent and your color scheme/style/branding/aesthetic is nothing short of fantastic. Very clean. Very professional. Very industrial and elegant simultaneously. Really well done........not that you needed me to tell you that.......because you already knew that.....
Looks fantastic on laptop display as well. 16:9 content, unless in full screen, is cropped on the sides when in Theater mode.
Haven't test with the new iphone but for me setting 3840 x 1646 seem right but maybe 1772 may work but there a other setting to change to make this work in davinci to no crop . you can add some bar 2:35 if you want super ultra wide but work great in video with not much action
hi man, you have some sick colour correction and colour grading look and channel styling. That's dope man. Could you please start a playlist about channel styling, achieving the same colour look in every video? The dark look in your videos is killing man 🔥
can you also tell what if we are editing in 1920 X 1080p then with what number we should replace 1080
Simple Math:
886 x 1920
Your video ratio is a perfect fit 🔥😍
What a great idea. I tried it on my phone and I was like, WOW - it totally fills the screen and even has nice rounded corners. Not so great on PC, mind you, and you lose that top and bottom real-estate - but such is the compromise.
I hope creators heed this advice. The phone experience is lacking because very few are doing this. Thanks for spreading the word.
16:9 with the new aspect ratio in mind is the best.
Even if most users are on mobile, not everyone has the new aspect ratio on it. It’s the best leave that option to the viewer, so they have both, 16:9 or whatever wide phone it might be!
You could put a tip on the beginning of the video mentioning that the video is ready to be cropped!
OOF yeah I need to check the YT Studio stats, if it's like yours I'm definitely gonna try to use this from now on.
Nice tip thanks :)
Happy to help buddy!
Great info . 2 video ideasfor you
1 how do you get your videos looking so sharp !
2 BTS on how you film your vids ( cameras /etc workflow )
Excellent work my friend . Subbed😊
1. He does not use a pro mist filter like everyone else now.
This video randomly popped up in my feed, so I want to convey my thoughts a bit.
The problem is that most smartphones in use are not at 19.5:9 ratio. Only the iPhones do - which constitute a _small_ percent of the total mobile usage. Most smartphones are at 20:9 aspect ratios.
Now, what's the problem, you might ask? Well, it's that the video doesn't *fit* quite right. The black bars on the left and right are slim - yes - but they are also at an awkward position; stuck between completely filling the screen and not doing so. The video gets cut off by only 3/4s of the holepunch, and that's if the device doesn't have a waterdrop notch.
I want to mention just how magnetising that awkward position was. Although the intention was better immersion, now the viewer's eye is drawn to how unbalanced the aspect ratio looks. And that will probably get a good dent in your viewership.
Creators like Marques and Peter use the more standard 18:9 aspect ratio - it might not fit perfectly on an iPhone, but it fits *much better* overall when you consider the sheer vareity of screen sizes and aspect ratios.
There's also Sam Beckman who has gone the other end and makes his videos at 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio. This actually plays into the different feeling thing for the average viewer, as they're only used to seeing a top and bottom black bar in movies. Pair that curious retention with a good production value - and you've got a hook.
That’s very interesting I’ll try it out
I been thinking about this for a while now. It's def a tough subject. I do like the 19.5 x 9, but my monitors are large, so I do enjoy the 21:9 ratio. 19.5 x 9 is a nice compromise to fit as much as possible on the large screen while still giving the phone the full screen. When I cast something to the TV, the whole thing breaks and now I'm back to wanting the traditional ratio. When watching a movie in 21:9 I do enjoy it and seem to prefer it. With all these different screen sizes, I guess sticking to 16:9 is understandable but unfortunately doesn't fit many viewing experiences.
The aspect ratio is perfect for TH-cam, but it's not a supported size if you want to add an end screen. Hopefully this is something they fix.
yeahhh... just tried to use this aspect ratio and ended up using a card instead :/
Tech is changing SO MUCH, I do not think only watching on the phone is the future. I believe we will stuck with the normal aspect ratio
Thanks....loved the colour of your videos...I shoot all my footage in cinetone colour profile not log...can any cinetone video be converted to this colour tone...just curious...if u can make any tutorial on that..
What's the 1080 equivalent? I can't stream 4K to other platforms.
1920 x ?
886 x 1920
The future of video content could be a way to figure out responsive video layouts that adapt to screen size. Although there would be some technical advancements needed to get this across the line. When faced with the same issue, web developers solved this with the creation of responsive layouts (With CSS) to adapt websites to scale across all screen aspect ratios.
But the only problem is we can't add end screen in end of our video if we do 21:9
Really?
Yep! I just realised that while uploading... I hope YT will change that in the future...
@@maxsautner I am waiting for this change from last 2 years 😂😂
@@Creative.visionzz Yess
Lovely stuff
what screen protector are you using? looks nicee
Great video, BUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT to notice is that TH-cam won't let you customize the "End Screen" section, so you won't be able to promote any of your videos at the end. Even more important is that TH-cam literally displays a "non valid aspect ratio" message when you try to customize this section, so maybe TH-cam doesn't like that much this aspect ratio..
I really appreciate you for providing this information, because I was also trying to achieve the same, but couldn't find the right solution.
But just to tell you, while watching this video on my Google Pixel 2XL I still have some space left on top and bottom, while on full screen mode.
Any solution to this?
I have done a fair few lets plays at 21:9 as I game on ultrawide. I personally like it a lot for gaming content, but, I am unsure if I would change regular videos... it will be interesting to see.
totally agree!
