It's so funny. Tracking actually helped me let go of some of my fear foods. I used to limit breads and bagels when I started my fitness journey (back in 2010/2011). I realized that ok a bagel has a lot of carbs, but so does oatmeal and a lot of other foods I was consuming. Now, nothing is off limits and I base my diet on how food makes me feel.
Yes! This is why I always say tracking can be a great tool that can HELP some people with their relationship with food. Anti-diet culture loves to hate on tracking macros but it can be so freeing for some people to finally understand what is actually in the food they're eating!
Same. I used to be deathly afraid of avocados, nuts, and peanut butter thinking that they're so high-calorie that they'll make me fat. When I started actually measuring and tracking them though, I realized they could totally fit into a healthy diet if I ate a reasonable portion and now I've actually been able to lose weight while eating those foods every day!
This truly is a fantastic video, there’s so much good advice here. “The reason you feel like you could eat endless chocolate cake, is because you tell yourself you can never have chocolate cake.” “When you don’t have these intense desires for these foods, caused by restriction, you can find the balance that actually make you feel good.” “Don’t wear hunger as a badge of honor”. Thanks so much! Maybe you could chop up some of these great phrases into TH-cam shorts? I love long videos but I feel you could reach way more people with your powerful “oneliners”. All the best!
I noticed how hard you were working in this video to avoid words like “unhealthy” and “bad” etc. You’re truly a wonderful person and im sure it made a good impact on so many people, it did on me. thank you❤️
I am recovering from anorexia and I LOVED this video. So helpful and amazing to see someone talk about food being FOOD and FUEL rather than trying to give food some kind of moral value👏🏻🤍🤍🤍
I'm so happy to hear that you're recovering 💗 And I'm glad this video was helpful! Wishing you all the health and happiness on your journey to recovery!
Somehow just finding your channel. (?) And SO GLAD I did. This is great, science-based info you're putting out, and the delivery is so well phrased and heartfelt. I adore your outlook, energy and mission. Keep crushing it lady!
As someone who ate 2,500 calories a day for a year to recover from an eating disorder, I can assure you that not only do I NOT crave chocolate cake, but my appetite is smaller than it's ever been in general. No one will just eat themselves to death unless there is severe illness involved.
I’m am currently trying to stop being obsessed with food ( specifically sweets). I appreciate you for marking the video. More videos about food obsession
All the commentary in this video was great! Your point of view with food, feeling well, fuelling, and allowing enjoyment is so amazing to see. So helpful to see your thought process.
I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of food more than I am afraid of losing control with food. I’m a chef, I love food, I wouldn’t have a profession if people didn’t love food and tested it solely as fuel. I just know that if I have that one little slip in control or that one bad day, one bite of that brownie will turn into me inhaling the whole container. It sucks.
I absolutely loved everything you said in this video! I honestly just have minor food problems but everything you said in this is exactly how i feel! Love it!
You have no idea how impactful your videos have been to me. I’ve completely changed the way I look at food and the way I eat. Everyday is a work in progress, but you have helped me immensely. I can’t thank you enough! This video was everything!
I love your videos and love the science you bring to your informational videos. I have followed others and have just been in a "diet" mentality as I follow along. I have been able to change my way of thinking through your videos. I dont crave foods like before. And the other day I woke up craving a coke, or so I thought. Have way through it, I still wasn't satisfied, then I decided to chug a big glass of water. I felt satisfied after that. For many years I would wake up wanting a soda that my mind went straight to thinking thats what I needed but my body was just asking for water. I realized I have some very bad habits that need to be addressed because they are more mentally than physical need. I keep watching you for knowledge because motivation does come and go and I can't rely on that. Thank you again for your videos. ❤️ You are doing amazing!
So true. Ive been buying nutbutters for the past 3 weeks... for the first time in years i don't feel like i want to eat the whole jar. Some days I don't even have to eat it. I started with buying individual packets.
Hi Marissa I just loved this video as I do all of your videos. It is so lovely to see a content creator (and i guess a fitness influencer ) do so much consistent good . Im a PT and nutrition coach myself and I regularly have directed many of my clients to your videos. I think the most instrumental point you make here is about CHOICE. I work with so many women who have deep routed fear and mistrust in food and before our work together they don't realise that although urges to purge feel inevitable we can take steps to diffuse that and our thoughts are what drive our choices and our actions. I just love your work here on youtube and I will continue to enjoy your channel and your explorations. With much love from Cee Fee here in the UK x
THIS. This is what I needed to hear/see. I get so obsessed with what not to eat, that I do exactly what you’re describing. And to make it worse, my intrusive thoughts about food run ramped and it’s all I think about 🤦🏼♀️
This video should be called advocating for reverse dieting! I love hearing about your reverse diet because it gives me so much hope that I will one day be able to eat more and not be afraid about gaining weight. I am currently in that phase to determine my TDEE that I am at right now. Exciting!
3 years of you helping me along my journey to detain all the diet culture in my brain, and becoming a healthier me! Great video timing as I go into my first bulk (with some nerves)! I have used diet cycles and taken breaks over this time, but this is the first time I’ve been in a headspace for surplus. Jan-Apr down 2% body fat and up 1lbs in muscle mass, but I think a surplus will be key to adding muscle fast (as my training, progressive overload, protein intake, sleep etc have been on point). THANK YOU,
Wow. Thank you missfitandnerdy. You put out a lot of very informative content but this one is the "icing on the cake" lol. Other content sharers will only talk about this but you not only discussed it with your viewers but you showed us by example. I feel better now after seeing this and listening to the knowledge behind treating oneself after holding to an eating plan. Again, thank you.
I’ve been working on this. Getting back into my love for cereal b/c it was something I wouldn’t allow myself before. It’s so fun eating all the flavors again. 🤗
My issue is that with going keto I have discovered that seed oils really impact me so I want to avoid them. I am also trying to lose weight and don't want to sacrifice progress for some junk food. I do occasionally, maybe once a month, I allow my self to eat what I want. It normally is for a birthday/ holiday. I don't fear foods and don't feel guilty for anything I eat but I am aware how different foods will impact my goals. Down about 80 lbs since October and have another 30 or so lbs to go.
Imo choosing not to eat foods for health reasons isn't inherently disordered or negative as long as it's genuinely coming from a place of loving yourself rather than hating your body
I’m quite the opposite .. I’m scared of being hangry so I tend to overeat.. til I get bouts of reflux and bloating 😩 so I don’t fear any food group.. I just fear losing control which happens most days 🫣
If you're constantly getting hangry, look at your macro ratios. Simple carbs are much less satiating. I'd try a higher protein/higher fat diet and see if that helps!
@@MissFitAndNerdy I’ve increased my protein to maybe 20-30gms per meal and fats.. still with carbs of course. I don’t restrict myself at all.. but come after lunch, I eat endlessly like there’s no tom. I’m thinking at this point it’s just a bad habit I need to overcome 😒 thanks 😉
I’ve noticed for me that is more of a bored eating or stress eating. If I’m going through that state, I plan with designated times to eat based with meal planning for my macros. If I do that for a week or so, I conquer the mental block. This works for me because I get that way when my brain is struggling with something else. I need small “wins” of control that reset my snacking to purposeful instead of escape.
@@mabequestrian same for me.. stress/boredom eating definitely. I go in cycles of having guilt and not over it. But what you’re doing makes sense.. I don’t want to bother calculating my macros though. I’ve tried it and it messes with my head.. but yes I can be wiser with my next meal. That’s what I’m trying to do but I think the lack of control and discipline is what makes me feel awful too aside from physical : the bloating and reflux. Thank you! ☺️
I'm Finally in a bulk recovery kinda phase I ate 2 sleeves of nuterbudders soked in milk and a cupple big sandwiches yesterday and well 2 beef gyros and snacks. Last week finshing a self tought training cycle I couldn't eat enough. Active recovery and hydration 3 day yield 20 lbs up I'm shure mostly water weight but I'd estimate I'll have gained 3 to five lbs of muscle by the end of the active recovery week then rinse repeat but change up.

The foods I have no control around and try not to buy or eat often: granola, peanut butter, cookies, brownies, cereal, fries, salt and vinegar potato chips, nuts, salted pistachios, chocolate covered anything, hummus and pita chips, anything fried
@@MissFitAndNerdy yes! This is a good point. I’d probably just gain 5lbs before I got sick of them and stopped being so tempted. But I hear what you are saying. I need to work towards this.
Could you do a video about body recomposition? I’m really curious about it but I don’t know if I believe the information out there. You’re one of the only fitness and nutrition youtubers whom I think really care about the information you’re giving people.
I came really late to this video although I am a sub and I am a little bit insecure about posting a message because the way I use your content is to be informed about how the body works with data and use that information in my own health journey (although I am not on a "fit" body type) and ease my mind around labels a lot of food have and habits. Its been now 2 years now that I improve a lot my relationship with my own body (I regularly do exercise 2-3 days a week, I try to include vegetables in my daily food, try to mix recommended options for junk food, etc..) and I am not even close on the expectation I have for my body however I can see the changes in ways I was not expecting (my legs are getting a shape I was not used to, my back and arms are starting to shrink). However this VERY TINY changes I am recognizing now is a 2 years journey (with weight fluctuating) but I look back and I can now really say I am finding my sustainable routine to keep this as a lifestyle and even though I can have periods of time in which I miss excersie or balanced food its way more easier to go back on track. I look up to you in the way of sustain a very healthy lifestyle with an excelent body type in a very conscious way, I am not sure if I can ever go there but I am really positive motivated by your content and a very unique and realistic way to find your own way of healthy lifestyle. Thank you very much for your work and effort on that
Any tips on how to help waste mentality? I have 2 toddlers and I’ll eat all my food but then feel like I need to finish the food that my kids don’t eat so it doesn’t go to waste.
I have a 2 and 4 year old so I totally understand. I actually make a little less and have some healthy back up food should they ask for more eg. A fruit plate or yogurt for ‘dessert’. Also if you don’t already, get a compost bin so all food scraps don’t go to waste, but actually help the environment. I’m in Australia and our compost actually gets picked up by the weekly bin collection. So that definitely helps
Imo it's still a waste of food if your body didn't need the food but you ate it anyway. Once the food is already bought/prepped, it's not like putting the food in your stomach vs the trash makes any impact on the world whatsoever. I'd recommend saving the food for leftovers or start composting!
@@MissFitAndNerdy I've worked through the cause (PTSD) and can eat most people under the table. LOL Getting in to strength training was essential in early recovery for me as I wanted to be strong more than I wanted to control my diet. So I turned the need for "control" (you're not in control) into a love for lifting heavy stuff.
I don't have any "fear foods." One thing I was blessed/cursed with, is I don't have a sweet tooth. I didn't even have one as a child. I'd still have leftover Halloween candy at five years old in April. Red meat and carbs though are my weakness. ☹️ I hope you're doing well.
Same, I've never had a sweet tooth, not even as a kid. I've always loved meat and cheese, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I've got a savory/salt tooth.
Fear foods don't have to be sweet. Thinking that carbs are your 'weakness' kind of indicates that you have a fear of carbs though. Carbs aren't the enemy--they fuel workout performance and muscle growth. Carbs can be your strength (literally)!
I absolutely love you and your videos! I've known about you for a while, just never watched your videos religiously like I do now. I wish I had your videos 115 lb earlier. 😭 You make eating seem so fearless. I've walked around for so long telling everybody that I am physically and mentally okay eating 900 to 1,100 calories a day. I've had a plateau for about 5 months now. I'm almost under 200 pounds and I want to hit that 160-180 range. But I really messed up my diet at first. Does anybody know if she has a video about how to get into Reverse Dieting the right way, from losing over a hundred pounds within a year? I haven't seen a "long weight loss journey and how to get back on track to where I am not starving myself and I'm living my life fearlessly and not restricted at my new weight" video. 😓✨
I love your videos. They’re helping me create a more healthy relationship with food and weight loss, so thank you! I have a question… I plan on tracking my macros/ calories to figure out my maintenance calories. But I am a housekeeper for an estate and the chef prepares out lunches every work day. They are almost always a protein with greens. How should I track? Should I start bringing my lunch or do you suppose making guesses data wise for those meals will be good enough? Thank you!
I am not fearful of any foods and thoroughly enjoy my meals, rarely eat out because my own homemade meals are just more enjoyable. However, in the last 4 months I feel I have gained so much fat on my body and I don't think it is a coincidence that I started drinking wine again around the same time it began. So I cut the wine again for a week and didn't notice much of a change in my body. I realize it's not a quick fix or anything but my body holds water easily and when I cut alcohol it usually is very noticeable within just a couple of days. I wish I could tell someone what my full day of eating looks like and them analyze it and tell me where I am going wrong! or what is it that is keeping this weight on me! I know I need to be in a deficit but on a normal day I probably only consume 1500-1800 calories tops. WAh!!!!!!
Can I do a reverse diet without lifting heavy? I would love to but at the moment I don't have access to the equipment needed to do so. I've been tracking my calories and turna out my maintenance calories are around 1550, and going down from there doesn't seem like a good or healthy idea.
I'm assuming that you want to gain some muscle weight. If so, 8 to 12 reps is generally best for this. There are a lot of body weight exercises that can stress the body. You can also try something that sprints and then working your legs. If you want to work your chest and triceps, push ups can work wonders. The further your hands are apart the more chest focused it is. Narrower hits the triceps more. Single legged squats and deadlifts are also very good. Pull ups are great for the back and most playgrounds have pullup bars if you don't have anything at home.
I'm not afraid of foods but I don't crave junk food either I haven't eaten junk food in 20 years because if it doesn't serve any purpose in my body I won't see it as food but what I was afraid of was eating lots of calories so maybe I didn't have a fear of food but I had a fear of calories but now I'm overcoming that fear, well I guess if I have to choose one food I can say I'm afraid of it would have to be fish because I don't know how to cook fish, if I can just boil fish and water that would be perfectly awesome and easy that's how I eat liver I just take the liver drop it in boiling water and cook it for 20 minutes, if I can cook fish the same way then I can overcome my fear of fish 😁😄
Nooooo cheat days are the antithesis of what I recommend. "Cheat days" are just a restrict/binge cycle in disguise. You don't need cheat days when you have balance
@@MissFitAndNerdy I agree with you when it comes to a maintenance phase but if I’m on a fat blast Im super strict Sunday- Friday and Saturday I get out the cravings and replenish my glycogen.
This video is fake!! LOL. The reason why I am saying this is because any fear food challenge is incomplete without delicious Indian food such as aloo paratha with full fat makhan and a glass of lassi for breakfast, makki di roti with sarson ka saag for lunch and rajma chawal for dinner. I will take you along with me to India. This will be the real fear food challenge!!
@@MissFitAndNerdy Thank god Indian food is something that you enjoy and you don't fear it. However, you will only get authentic Indian food only in India!! Once the pandemic is over, you have to visit India to savor the food.

I do the same thing. I tell everyone that the easiest way for me to get sick is if my daughter gets sick.
I had anorexia back in high school, but never had fear foods. Never restricted types of foods, food groups, etc. I was a strange one for sure!
I'm glad you were able to escape at least that part of diet culture! I hope you're fully recovered now ❤️
@@MissFitAndNerdy I've worked through the cause (PTSD) and can eat most people under the table.
I hope you're doing well.
@@MissFitAndNerdy well put!
Red meat is incredibly nutrient-dense. No need to stress out about it.
Can you please share the yoga workout you were doing?
Also, LOVE your videos. Super credible info
Melty peanut butter is the best... now I want toast.... I need to buy bread.
Oh! I have an english muffin in my fridge... I'm gonna run home on my break and get it!
YESSSS DO ITTT 😍😍😍
Thanks for the amazing advice
Hope it helps!
I wish LOVE to order from Thrive Market. But sadly they do not ship to Canada :( Great video as always!
Just in time for my post workout dinner 👌🏻
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I have a question…
I plan on tracking my macros/ calories to figure out my maintenance calories. But I am a housekeeper for an estate and the chef prepares out lunches every work day. They are almost always a protein with greens. How should I track? Should I start bringing my lunch or do you suppose making guesses data wise for those meals will be good enough?
Thank you!
Where did you get your crop top that you wore throughout your yoga session? I absolutely love it!
"For me that's not a fear food, that's a death food" 😂
hahaah it's true though 😭😂
The HU snickerdoodles are soooo good! Definitely recommend giving them a try :)
Hu is amazing overall 🙌🏻 their cashew butter chocolate is the best thing on earth 😍
Why do potato chips give me gas and they don't digest well at all? Thanks
It could be the oil. Is this all chips? Do corn chips do the same? What about baked chips?
WAh!!!!!!
That white top is totally adorable.
Blaze pizza is actually really low calorie for pizza 🍕 I love it
Not if you add ALL the toppings hahaha
Could you tell me supplements that can balance hormones please
Which donut shop did you go to? My son loves donuts but he’s sensitive to gluten. Please help!
I went to breadblok and erin mckenna's bakery!
@@MissFitAndNerdy Thank you so much for responding! This is why I’m so loyal to you. Please don’t ever change. ❤️
What kinda of bread did you toast? I’m grain free so I’m always on the hunt for good grain free bread!
You do have to lift heavy, but heavy is relative. If 5lbs is heavy for you then that works!
But what if my ideal body is a figure competitor during peak week??
Much like eating chocolate cake all day every day, it wouldn't be sustainable.
How many kombuchas do you drink a day? Which is your favorite?
The problem is... I hate Gym... I love pilates and yoga ans walking so reverse diet wont wiek for me i guess ☹️ i maintain on about 1400
💚
I would totally eat a croissant with you !
Well said
Thank you 🙏🏻
Lovely
Long live the cheat day!
FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSE ONLY..lol.. great video.
Exactly! Definitely not for medical advice haha
amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing video
Thanks so much for watching!!
wait where do you live again?? A simple croissant for $6.5 seems A LOT
It’s a gluten free croissant. Gluten free red stuff always costs a ton more, especially when it actually tastes good lol
First Comment! 😀
Thanks so much for being so early!!! :)
This will be the real fear food challenge!!
hahahah if everyone had said they were afraid of indian food, I would have FEASTED on indian food! It's one of my all time fav cuisines!
@@MissFitAndNerdy Thank god Indian food is something that you enjoy and you don't fear it. However, you will only get authentic Indian food only in India!! Once the pandemic is over, you have to visit India to savor the food.
second :sob:
I still appreciate you!
