My wife and I just spent 70% of 3-weeks time in the countryside and mountains, from Tamagawa Onsen to Yonago and Unzen Onsen. Our best Japan trip.

This adds a whole new perspective to Tokyo, thanks for the insight. Wow, seeing that Yaris brought back memories. We rented one on the Island of Crete. That was definitely the smallest car I ever rented. Can't wait to see the Nara video. Yes, I recall the claims that it was the biggest wooden building in the world, but that was decades ago. If no longer, what is the biggest today? I know when we were visiting the Forbidden City in Beijing last month we were told that was the largest complex of wooden buildings in the world. Stay cool. We hit 68 degrees F yesterday on our hike to Anchorage's Big Secret Beach at our Kincaid Park and that is about as hot as it ever gets in this locale.

This area brings back so many memories, if I’m correct I believe that is the area that the military base has their campgrounds. And in the late 80s and early 90s that’s where I used to go to Girl Scout camp. It was camp Tama I believe ❤ 🇯🇵

Tama River flows downstream from Lake Okutama north of Ome. I use to fish, and four wheel in my Mitsubishi Jeep, and camp in the River by Fusa down to Route 20 Bridge near Hachioji.

Does Japan get wildfires? Unfortunately, with the experience every summer in my country, all I could think of looking at all the greenery was how fast this could look like the apocalypse if a fire started. I suppose if it rains once or twice a week in the summer the danger is smaller. It's the long dry spells and windy days that make the wildfire situation very difficult.

    • @vonneumann6161

Ugh. High temp with humidity is the WORST! That's why I swore off going to Tokyo area in the summer! You will only see me in Tokyo in the season of Fall, Winter, and Spring. Basically outside of summer! Unless I'm in Hokkaido, I will not go there unless there's family emergency! That's why usually go there in November! As far as Tamagawa in inaka goes, I believe we went there for Ensoku (field trip) when I was in elementary school. Yup. If you want to enjoy inaka in Tokyo, you gotta go West!

I walked from Kanagawa to Chiba in 2004 and it was okay. Walk slow, start early, nice break from 10:30 to 14:00 when sun is highest, good for a lunch break. Stay hydrated. Long days make nice hikes but some days are dangerous so watch the humidity levels, not just the thermometer.
