be awesome to watch you setup (from start to finish) a system showing everything as you go through, inc breakers, wireing etc even if it's a 10 part youtube series. Thanks for the great videos

Always a pleasure to stop by OBX. Thanks for the video. By the way, I finially got Skype for my lap top that goes to work with me. I still need to buy a camera for the home computer but that will come. I was able to hook up with 1952jeep so far so that was cool.

Great Video as usuaol Kevin I have a question on a different matter though Please, in a previous video you mentioned keeping spare and bkp equipment in a faraday Cage, as pretty much all a Solar or hybrid setup is electronic in nature, incase of a EMP or surge via lighteng strike like you reciently had doesnt that comprimise having solar in the first place ? how can we protect our solar/ hybrid systems can we use a wrap around faraday cage over the whole system ? you ideas would be valued Tony

when the power goes out the inverter switches to batterie power so quick I dont eaven know it happened. Most grid tie inverters have whats called ISLAND PROTECTION wich keeps our linemen safe. There will be no backfeed. Hope that answered your question...

Very informative and to the point. Nicely done. Best information on actual use of this equipment that I've been able to find. I recently upgraded my inherited Outback inverter and controller to the newer models like these. You have your grid tied to the AC HOT IN but if I understood correctly you could just as easily connect a generator to the same point, right? Also, I may have missed it but can you tell me what size wire you used for your grid to the AC HOT IN terminals? Thanks and keep making these videos!!!

The 12V bank runs all of my outdoor and some indoor lighting every night off the nightwatchman photoswitch.

We have consult with a solar array installer who chooses to use Outback inverters. I understand why he goes with this inverter but my wife sees there are cheaper inverters on the market. How can I convince her the Outback is worth the $2000 the installer is quoting?

Good explanation. I like the twist lock bypass option. Will incorporate into a system I'm installing in my cabin. I'm curious, I know batt bank is required but once bank's topped off is it the bank that continues to feed the 30amp breaker or the panels directly? Probably a stupid question but I'm curious how much wear/tear my bank will be taking using this inverter. Thx for all the great vids.

12 vs 24 is all about wire size. The cool thing about 12V is the avalibility of things that will run on it. The down fall is to make it work right you will spend some money in large wires..

nice, IN CASE A LIGHTNING strikes.. you think is OK to set a in line amp fuse on the pv array cables coming down to your charge controllers? you think may avoid getting the charge controllers toasted like those you showed?

Just ordered mine and a Mate 3. It will be kept off-grid and I want to take some circuits off my house mains service panel. The one I just ordered is a 24v, 3500w unit.

Aww, OK. But I am planning an off grid system in the Philippines. Small farm with few needs. Mostly lighting, TV, small fridge some like 5.7 cu ft. But could really use some help figuring what I need out, planned on getting a 60 amp outback charge controller, and a 2000w sealed outback inverter. 1000w of solar panels, running at 24v. But there are a lot of cloudy days to deal with so I know during the rainy season I will need to fire up a generator. Any advise on this?

Do you have any thoughts on the Outback Flexmax 80? I value your opinion and am trying to put a system together for my shop. I assume the GTFX 2524 would work well with it? Thanks.

To be honest with you I dont know much about them. I think they are a good way to go because they are prewired and anyone inspecting your system would have a tough time arguing about codes.

A metal case charge controller may be OK, but you should keep some big diodes in a safe place and if the SHTF you can still charge the batteries the old fashioned way and not worry about nighttime feedback. Keep a spare inverter in your EMP safe place and have LED lighting ready, maybe get some basic RV store bought 12V and propane cooking things. Plus you are going to have a lot more to worry about when all the unprepared people around you come wondering why your lights are on.

Are you using Xantrex C35s, C40s, or C60s for the 24v?

so if I am reading this correctly, if I don't have a battery bank I cant use this system at all? I recently acquired 2 of these with 23 panels that I plan to hook to my house to lower my elec bill. but I have no battery bank and that is a little out my price range as a lowly street cop lol. I was able to get the inverters for $150 each with the 23 panels for another $200. A great deal but now I don't know how to hook without a bank. any suggestions of maybe another inverter or idea?

is it better to have a 12 volt system 24 volts systems, what is more productive.

Does the Outback hum very much under load? At idle?
    Thanks

Ian Moone Its very quiet for the most part there is some noises like fluids moving around. The fan is the only thing I would say makes noise and it only comes on when the loads and or draws are high... Grid tie output, Battery discharge and battery charging. I am very happy with the Outback.Hope that helped.
