I saw a documentary years ago. The chickens were kept in a 1 ft x 1 ft cages for their entire lives. Their beaks were clipped to keep them from pecking their neighbors to death. They couldn't stand up because of no exercise and rapid growth. I remember thinking "why can't they just roam around in a decent barn like cows do in the fields?" I was kind of happy to see they're doing that with THESE chickens. This setup may not be perfect, but it's better than what I saw. There's always room for more kindness to animals, and each other.

I always thought of chicken farming as how my neighbors did it, pens in their yards with chickens roaming about in the grass. They kept them for eggs, let them live a long life, and only slaughtered them when they grew old. I was caught up in the lie of what farming was. I didn't want to think about factory farming, but I'm not surprised this industry is all about profit.
It breaks my heart that the one chicken she held had never been petted before, never seen sunlight, and never spread its wings because of being cramped. That was it's one moment of happiness in its life before it was sent to be slaughtered. Every chicken in there was an individual animal, each with their own personalities and quirks. None of them lived a happy life.

The ignorance regarding cattle and chicken abuse in the U.S. is extreme. The average person goes to fast food chains and grocery stores happily supporting animal torture. The average American buys products that have been tested on animals who suffer torture. This is cause and effect is the primary reason Americans feel toxic but do not understand the cause. Look around at how unhealthy the people are in our country. You see if we neglect disabled kids and animals, if we support wars, if we go along with horrendous suffering then it boomerangs into our world. Without compassion for "everything" our senses are dulled which results in vast depression/anxiety resulting in hate and lack of care. This vicious cycle can be repaired with compassion, love and kindness. Don't allow the corporate machine to control your world be an honest genuine person then you will discover how to be happy. Even the comments in this thread are so ignorant it gnerates enormous concern regarding how shallow and incapable of depth people have become. You have to change your diet and nourish your mind in order to learn and communicate what is happening in the world. Lead by example change course and teach others about these atrocities.

Yes! There is a local farm in my area that raises cattle and chicken. One - the animals are not held captive. They get to be animals. Two - grass fed without antibiotics (which means no methane - they emit methane from antibiotics, actually). Three - they don't get frozen or take a tour of the US before ending up on my grocery shelf. They're vacuum sealed and i get them same day only 30 mins away. The farm also processes the whole animal - bones for soup or bone meal, leather goods, items from the horn, feet for the gelatin. Not just dumping the offal and carcass that could have so many more uses.

People keep saying these (meat animals) are all God’s creatures as if they are supposed to run freely all over creation, revered and celebrated romantically. Yet the Bible explicitly states these animals are for every live being’s consumption. That is their purpose, just as we have a purpose (supposedly). We cry about slaughtering cattle and chickens but does anyone deny that wild predator beasts savagely and cruelty take down and torture other animals? I have seen on You Tube here disgusting scavengers, dozens of hyenas and lions eating the rear ends of LIVE wildebeests and antelopes, zebras and what ever moves. The poor paralyzed thing sits helpless. Does anyone suggest these wild beasts eat grass and leaves only?

I grew up working a factory farm, and honestly, if you want to end the cruelty, maybe send a photography crew out to document the waste caused by companies like Walmart and target. If they wouldn’t waste as much we wouldn’t need to produce in such large quantities. Also, we as farmers work as much or more hours than lawyers (80-90 hrs non-winter) yet make very little. I’m against animal cruelty and I do think it’s wrong how animals are treated in meat industries but I think it’s fine for people to hunt animals for food. In the wild deer and other animals get killed all the time by lions and wolves. I think that killing animals for food should be done humanely of course, like a quick and painless death. It seems odd to me that there wasn't a clear statement suggesting people stop eating chicken. I love the exposure in htis, but the message to "never cause harm, never look away" is too vague for most people. The best thing consumers can do is stop buying dead animals and animal secretions. It's the only way to directly reduce suffering and death.

Also the cheapest foods are things like pasta, rice, potatoes, bananas, oats, grains, legumes, bread etc all vegan. But you’re correct in that some people don’t have that access. But it would become more accessible to those people if those who could shifted to a plant based diet and a lot of systematic change occurred. These animals are not pets. They are bred for consumption by humans who eat chicken. Whether they are bred on a large farm or a small one their lives are short-lived. They are bred to be killed for human consumption. This video plays on your emotions. Remember not everyone is a vegetarian and a lot of people eat meat. This is a form of food bullying to advance the video maker's opinion. Basically, her platform of implied power. Would it be better to leave these chickens outside to be killed by foxes or opossums? Furthermore, would it be less cruel to give them a name and raise them as if they are your pet? Or better yet, free-range these chickens and let the environment kill them. So, what you are not mentioning is that factory farming is keeping the price of chicken meat affordable for low-income families that cannot afford Free-Range or Organic types of meat. Let's face it there are people starving all over the world. When you are watching this video think of someone who can not afford to even eat. Solve that problem first, then tackle big farming practices.

If it wasn't for factory farming the vast majority of people in this country couldn't afford to eat. And when I'm talking about factory farming I am also including those who raise fruit and vegetables. Anyone who wants proof of this just has to attend a farmer's market in the summer. The chicken free range on small farms run seven to ten dollars a pound raw. You can buy an entire factory farmed bird already cooked for five to six dollars in Jewel, Costco, or any other grocery store. Grass fed beef from a small ranch will run you twelve dollars a pound for ground beef and twenty eight dollars a pound for a cheap cut of steak. Tomatoes from a local farmer will run you five dollars a pound while the grocery store will sell them to you in season for a dollar to a dollar and a half a pound. Eggs from a local farmer will run you eight to twelve dollars a dozen while at the grocery store it will run you ninety cents to a dollar and a quarter a dozen. And if you think the animals on factory farms are treated badly than you've got a real surprise on how migrant farm workers are treated that pick you fruits and vegetable. They are paid slave wages and live in rat infested hovals. You've got entire families working the fields including kids a young as six years old working twelve hour days.

Factory-farmed chickens pose a significant threat to human health, primarily due to the high probability of zoonotic diseases escaping and causing a devastating pandemic. The conditions in which these chickens are raised-cramped, unsanitary, and stressful-create an ideal breeding ground for pathogens to develop and spread. This risk is compounded by the widespread use of antibiotics in these settings, which promotes the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The cramped environments of factory farms facilitate the rapid transmission of diseases among the chickens. Pathogens such as avian influenza (bird flu) and salmonella thrive in these conditions. When these diseases make the jump from animals to humans, they can cause severe illness and have the potential to spread rapidly within human populations. The H5N1 strain of avian influenza, for example, has been known to infect humans, leading to severe respiratory illness and high mortality rates. The close quarters in which factory-farmed chickens are kept increase the likelihood of such viruses mutating and acquiring the ability to transmit more easily between humans.
Moreover, the extensive use of antibiotics in factory farming contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria can spread to humans through direct contact with animals, consumption of contaminated meat, or through the environment, such as water supplies contaminated with waste from the farms. When these antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect humans, they are much harder to treat, leading to higher morbidity and mortality rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have repeatedly warned about the dangers of antibiotic resistance, noting that it poses one of the biggest threats to global health.
The environmental impact of factory farming also plays a role in the spread of zoonotic diseases. The massive amounts of waste produced by these farms can contaminate soil and water sources, spreading pathogens far beyond the confines of the farm. This environmental contamination can affect nearby human populations, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. Additionally, the pollution caused by factory farms can lead to respiratory problems and other health issues in humans, further weakening their ability to fight off infections.
Ethical and welfare concerns in factory farming, while primarily focused on animal suffering, also intersect with human health risks. The stress and poor health conditions experienced by the chickens can lead to the emergence of more virulent strains of diseases, which can then spread to humans. This creates a cycle of poor animal welfare leading to greater human health risks.
Given these factors, the high probability of zoonotic diseases escaping from factory farms and causing a pandemic is a significant concern. The COVID-19 pandemic, believed to have originated from a zoonotic source, has shown the devastating impact such diseases can have on global health, economies, and societies. The potential for factory-farmed chickens to be the source of the next pandemic cannot be ignored.
Addressing this threat requires a multi-faceted approach, including improved farming practices, stricter regulations on antibiotic use, enhanced surveillance for zoonotic diseases, and greater emphasis on animal welfare. By taking these steps, we can reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases escaping from factory farms and protect public health from the threat of future pandemics.

By doing that you're only giving them more money to continue this line of abuse.

I wish I could sit with all those chickens. Seeing stuff like this…it makes me feel so bad…

You sound like my dad before he got sick--called chickens walking drumsticks all the time. He's healthy now thankfully and hasn't had meat in almost 7 months--still don't believe it. Anyway have a good one

I bet she wouldn't care if the chicken was ants or ugly bugs instead. If it's small and weird, no one cares what happens to them, if it's a little bigger and can bleed, it needs to be protected. What a biased logic.
