I lived in NY since I was born and to me a NY accent sounds more like talking clearer and not as cool as a Country guy accent or European accents now those are cool.
ivan, i must say, your videos for the new york accent are superb! i'm not even an actor, i'm just teaching myself because i'm bored-i've become obsessed!!!
I love your accent videos! I'm a little obsessed with the New York accent and Boston accent. XD I practice a lot too. XD These videos are amazing and very helpful. :)
I grew up "lawnguyland " in Nassau county, and now live in rural minnesota. I'm worried I'll eventually lose my accent that I'm actively trying to not lose it lol. my mom grew up in the Bronx and lived in Oklahoma for many years as an adult and she still has the Bronx Irish accent. she hasn't lived in the Bronx in almost 40 years and still has it so many I'll keep my accent though I've know life long new Yorkers move to North Carolina or Georgia and start talking like a southerner after a year or two
FlammablePaper Yeah, I'm from LI too, it's mostly older people who have it nowadays, but I have met young people, even kids, who have it, as I'm sure you have.
Lana N no this is a lie. I do not speak like that. Only some New Yorkers speak like that, but they were normally born, or have relatives from New Jersey. This is absolutely stupid to me.
I think it's brooklyn that is severe, my wife is from long island she also sounds a little severe but that might be because her mother is from new jersey, so my wife's accent is all over the place.
I'm from the Bronx, born and raised. I moved to Pennsylvania and friends and family say I losing accent just a little bit. I'm 33 years young and I still talk like a New Yorker. LOL. Some ppl here in PA say that they can barely understand me! But the way they say certain words kill me. Example, the word "wash" they add an R to the word. So it's being said, "warshed" ah man. I loovvee my New York (BX) accent.
Shannon Randall facts I'm in the same situation I moved to pa from the Bronx and my friend told me my accent sounded gangster the thing that kills me is that in school the teachers and students say forget instead of forgot
I was born in Illinois, grew up in the SoCal desert, and now live in NM near the TX border. After running across more than my share of Southern and Texan drawls, I've been wanting to master this further just to throw people off.
How about that inflection when asking questions? I'm not from the US but I notice this a lot ever since I started watching one of the episodes of the Rhoda show.
Don't ye dare listen to them, for Southern accents are similar to songs; ye all sing-talk, not talk, and that soothes the soul! Southern accent is the best of all American accents, and the Northern snobs or yankees, as ya'll rightly call them, is jealous they can't talk that nicely that they make fine of ya'll! I wish I could speak with a Southern accent but it's so damn hard! :-(
Somehow the New York accent sounds very High German to me and therefore appears to sound well-spoken and educated to me. When Americans tourists come to Europe, and you notice they can't be British but stem from the US, they often have this strong "er" as their basic modulation. As in Hamm-ER. I noticed that New Yorkers do not share this habit at all. What is the hesitation vowel in New York accent?
Those asking if this is true i have the answer. the typical New York accent is only for people in the NYC and Long Island area. I am from Long Island and for those that don't know Long Island is located right outside of the New York City borough of Queens and Brooklyn. I have been told that i do have an accent and yes a lot of Long Islanders and people from the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island share the same accent with little inferences, tawwk and dowwg are true.
Only for people there? Yeah right. I have lived in Arizona all my life and everyone in my family has lived in Arizona/Cali/Colorado yet me and 3 of my cousins ended you with a New York Accent
You're talking about downstate NY accents. New York State has at least four different dialects. People living upstate do not sound at all like downstaters.
thats actually the entire reason i looked this up even harder when you first heard the books on audible and the reader's percy-voice is stuck in your head whenever you read the books
Guys..Remember different areas speak differently. Brooklin sound a little different than Queens which is different from Long Island...get my point. The rest of NY talks diffidently and nothing like these subs. Native Western NYer.
Not everyone in New Yawk....says Axe, fuggedaboud,....use guys ....but this is most Italian Amer. accent....Some people from N.Y. Ri-dic-A-lous...instead of "Ridiculous"....We have many Ethnic people here .....Some people say "New Jersey Tornpike".... guess who????
I can't tell if this guy is 30 or 50

ivan, i must say, your videos for the new york accent are superb! i'm not even an actor, i'm just teaching myself because i'm bored-i've become obsessed!!!
Coffee is a good is example "cawfee"
This is how you do an accent video, not a minute of "hi, today I am going to teach you how to talk like this..." in no accent.
I think you are quite a hansome fella :) Thank you for teaching us the NY accent :)
Other places: “ bacon egg and cheese” New Yorkers: “BacconemmegCheeze
Well, this almost is similar to how those 'Eye-talian'American mafia folks speak with a slice of pizza being chewed on somewhere in there! :-P :-D
Shijoe Joseph *most of them are from New York (Queens)*
I love your accent videos! I'm a little obsessed with the New York accent and Boston accent. XD I practice a lot too. XD These videos are amazing and very helpful. :)

do all people that are born and raised in New York have an accent?
Not really. I'm from NY but I don't have an accent.
Lana N I'm from Long Island, and I would say I only have a slight New York accent.
FlammablePaper Yeah, I'm from LI too, it's mostly older people who have it nowadays, but I have met young people, even kids, who have it, as I'm sure you have.
***** ha! I thought that was just a black thing; never would have guessed it to be a white thing! :-o oh, well! :-D
Lana N no this is a lie. I do not speak like that. Only some New Yorkers speak like that, but they were normally born, or have relatives from New Jersey. This is absolutely stupid to me.
i live a couple miles from manhattan and speak like this just not as severe
I think it's brooklyn that is severe, my wife is from long island she also sounds a little severe but that might be because her mother is from new jersey, so my wife's accent is all over the place.
im from CNY, and its so weird how different the NY accent is from up here, we speak like a minnesota ultra light accent.
I like the NY accent.
I'm from the Bronx, born and raised. I moved to Pennsylvania and friends and family say I losing accent just a little bit. I'm 33 years young and I still talk like a New Yorker. LOL. How about that inflection when asking questions? I'm not from the US but I notice this a lot ever since I started watching one of the episodes of the Rhoda show.
I was born in Montauk, but moved to North Carolina when I was like, a week old. 13 years later, I have no new york accent. I want it BACK!
I'm kinda still working on the accent but so far, not so bad
When I get angry the accent comes out… I don’t even live near many people with the accent, lol

Thank you, this really helped with my drama assessment!

Supposed to be studying for exams.. Instead watching this

Its like I'm hearing Deniro talking. I bet you are of Italian descent.( kinda narration from a mob movie)
New york city people sound like this, but I am from central ny, near syracuse and we do not sound like this at all

thats actually the entire reason i looked this up
even harder when you first heard the books on audible and the reader's percy-voice is stuck in your head whenever you read the books
You sound like the narrator from the departed.
***** I have seen it just once; no idea why it won all of those awards -- nothing special about it, and so very much overrated!
Hey tony
im too british to achieve this
You're cute.
Guys..Remember different areas speak differently. Brooklin sound a little different than Queens which is different from Long Island...get my point. The rest of NY talks diffidently and nothing like these subs. Native Western NYer.

Why am I suddenly attracted to this person??
Moe's accent!
they even speak words that i don't get it, it seems not popular like typical english, they use "car" as "vehicle".
That's because they have no use no rikshwas or trams or buses there; it's either a cab or own-car; so to them that's vehicle. :-P :-D lucky bastards!
ModoLama even in texas we just call em cars. well i do at least. but my parents are from the midwest
Im not a new Yorker but I sound like one ugh
Not everyone in New Yawk....says Axe, fuggedaboud,....use guys ....but this is most Italian Amer. accent....Some people from N.Y. Ri-dic-A-lous...instead of "Ridiculous"....We have many Ethnic people here .....Some people say "New Jersey Tornpike".... guess who????
