Unfortunately, the New York accent is dying. Almost everybody under 35 looks at me like I got three heads because I speak like this. Thanks for a great job and a great video!
Chokfi But you can try to speak with your remote accent, it makes You stand out and gives you a sense of identity .I personally think a new york accent is also more eloquent. (Just listen to Senator Sanders, regardless of politics, he sounds very articulate.
At class people thought I was strange because I talk with a New York accent. Someone said " ain't is not a word' Another time I said "another word" and the person replied" what's a woed" and started making fun of my New York accent.
I grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and lived most of my 6 decades in Queens. This video just sounds like normal, natural talk to me! Good job!
Thank you I've watched your other videos and, I have probably watched this one in particular like 4-5 times. I'm in the production Newsies and it's really helped. Thank you
It's weird to me that I have this New York accent when I ain't from New York at all. I was born in Indiana and raised there all my life. No one in my family even has a New York accent. I just randomly have it. I grew up with it and my parents and teachers thought I had a speech impediment. Little did I know, I actually had a New York accent that I had no idea about all my life until this year when it started standing out more to me.
Interesting stuff. It's quite possible that you acquired the NY accent subconsciously from listening to TV, movies, radio etc; the impulse to speak this way came from somewhere, even a meeting with a New Yorker in your childhood might have been the unconscious cause. If the way you speak sounds coarse or crude to your family and associates and is conspicuous, you could try moderating the accent by concentrating on a mid-west tone. Personally I like the NY accent. How speech sounds isn't as important as the content of the speech.
I’m a New Yorker born and raised and my accent is so strong wherever I go, people know I’m from NY. I don’t get why people find it a thing for or accents, to us we speak normal we never knew we had a accent until going to other states.
I'm Brazilian and I also do that. I believe it has to do with the fact that new york had a lot of immigration hence non-native English speakers tend to find it easier.
Hey, Ivan, you are the best. Straight up tips with a sense of humor, a classy yet down-to-earth style, and I learned a lot watching a few short videos. The tips on the vowel sounds are essential, Thank you!
Was listening to Jim Carroll the poet and musician reading his poetry. He has a very thick accent that I love. It seems like a combination of the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Wish I could articulate that accent; I love it. Thanks for your video!
I just happened upon your video. I am looking for what a nyc accent would have sounded like around 1880, adjusted for the fact that the person was from Nunda, but lived there. Thanks.
I know how to speak the New York accent. I really like the New York accent. You look like an actor! I can listen to you talk for hours ;) Unfortunatly People that have the New York accent are very rare now. Can you make a video were you read a book for one hour? so I can listen to that beautiful New York accent.
I loved the video 😊. I’m playing Norma Hubley in Plaza Suite and would like to stench my acting chops and try to do it with a NY accent. Thing is- I was born and raised in Kentucky 😅! Any help ya can offer would be awesome! ❤
With the younger generation (such as myself) the accent is mostly gone, but I've noticed it will randomly show up on certain words. I think that for more regional terms, the old pronunciation still sticks around.
Part of your accent seems more like Brooklyn or Queens. Not like Long Island. So it mostly is the same as my accent without the dropped R's. I refuse to lose my NY accent.
For some reason, I'm trying to learn New York accent. I'm studying in west of England, but I have that average American accent and I want to get rid of it.
I have an audition here I have to speak in a New York accent. Was wondering if any of you guys have any tips for saying “ok everybody, it’s ok…nothing to worry about now, back to your tables” It’s fat Sam from bugsy malone

Regional accents are dying all over america except for in remote areas.
That's sadly true. Even if you check Donald Trump's accent (and he's no toddler) it's hard to really classify him as a New Yorker.
