I am really happy that ÖBB went against the trend a few years ago and continued to offer night trains, even bought Deutsche Bahn's old stock of sleeper trains. Otherwise no European train manager would have notice the uptick in demand. Travelling at night in a modern sleeper compartment makes train journeys of 8 hours and more pleasant and it's a real alternative to taking a plane. There are new European night services in the works and I hope we will eventually have a network of night trains that covers the entirety of Europe.
True that and I really hope that this trend will change again towards better quality and quantity of sleeping trains because choosing between a ultra long bus haul in uncomfortable european busses or airplanes there's no real solution for it.
Yes, I too read that the Deutsche Bahn sold their nightcompartments to Austria. As I travelled once from Berlin to Basel in a night compartment , I am still looking to where they sold it to? It was single bed and bathroom inside. This journey was breathtaking and luxurious. Does anyone know where these compartments were sold to?
@@selini52 You mean the deluxe compartments? There are deluxe compartments in both the normal sleeper carriages used on Berlin-Zurich as well as in the double decker ones used on Hamburg-Zurich.
ÖBB really knows how to design a good sleeper service when every other state railway around them abandoned the service. Specially Germany in 2016 with their CityNightLine being discontinued

Thanks for the nice feature. Only issue I have with ÖBB in the context of the new nightjets is that while they ADVERTISE all services with images of the new couchettes, you don't get to experience the new service level at some of the routes considered "lower priority" by ÖBB. E.g.: I recently took the Vienna-Berlin service, booking into a 4 bed couchette, which was advertised with the "new" interior. However, what I got was an old 6-bed couchette, into which only 4 passengers had been booked. At least servicing of the toilets has improved over the past years. Great foresight by Austrian National Railway OEBB! Bravo!
I don't know many locals who like Hauptbahnhof. Most commuters and regular travellers I know prefer Meidling, which is of course not build for that sort of traffic load. There's no point in living in a city with outstanding public transport that takes you to most places in less than thirty minutes if you then need more than ten minutes to get from the underground station to your train. Hauptbahnhof is badly planned, chaotic, and even the usually excellent Viennese signage system can't fully compensate its mess.
@@frauleinbird Being from Vienna myself, I completely disagree. The walk from the underground to the platform is similar to what you would expect from any major station (its not much longer than on the decidedly smaller Westbahnhof and even better than on Zürich or Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof for example). The older Südbahnhof that was there before it was a complete disgrace and the new Hauptbahnhof as well as its facilities and location are absolutely superb in my opinion. Although I live closer to Meidling than to Hauptbahnhof, I absolutely hate it there and from the city center itself, Hauptbahnhof is also much more reachable. I think Meidling should be rebuilt though to offer similar comfort.
@@dahauns That's because they purposely reconstructed the passage to route you through the shopping center. There used to be a direct escalator to the main platforms form the U3. Now there are only 2 (or 3?) elevators in a corner that bring you directly to the upper level where the trains are. I didn't like the Hauptbahnhof (main station - it's not a central station ;->) at first, because I missed the trains being made available half an hour or even an hour before it left. But now we have more trains that pass through (eg Budapest - Zürich), so that's less an of an option anyway. The one thing it's missing is a good waiting area. People are using the food tables to wait for trains and it's often quite hard to find one to eat in the evenings because people sit there until their train is available, even if they don't eat. (Or I suspect some also just go there to use the free Wifi.)
Very nicely presented, when working in Germany I was fortunate enough to get down to Bodensee ( Lake Constance) on the German side of the lake and it was absolutely beautiful and by bus and train travelled up to Dortmund through Ulm and along the Rhine, great description of the refurbished cars looking forward to seeing your next post
honestly, this is the first vid i've watched on your channel and I love your train reports already. especially the voiceover, it legit sounds like asmr
Great vid with excellent and informative voiceover. Gonna have to stick that one on an ever expanding list. As you say, the cost may be high for a single passenger, but it is certainly good value for two or three people.
I paused and thought about the cost for a while, and it's a bit expensive for a single traveler but it's not hard to justify the cost. What's the alternative? Spend half a day driving (which also isn't free) and then stay in a hotel overnight? So let's say that would cost about $200. While you're driving you're not working, or relaxing, or admiring the fantastic scenery, so there's also some value in being able to do those things instead of driving a car. A coach seat on the express train might be a bit more practical, but for a nominal extra cost this train seems much more relaxing and fun.
Feldkirch is an adorable town btw. I spent a year living there and know this route between Feldkirch and Vienna quite well. The best bit of scenery I think is when the train makes a big S swoop on the track east of Bludenz as you're entering the Klostertal (east bound). If you time it just right you can get a great shot of your own train and engine with the mountains in the background (provided you're sitting in a rear carriage).
Thanks for the great video and commentary. As an old person who tires a bit quicker now, the Night Jets will become a more restful way to travel round Europe.
Great video! I really enjoyed your use of Google maps to show the route of the train.I've never seen it done this way in other videos. This was my first video of yours, and I'll watch more. Good work!
Nicely detailed video. As someone who doesn't much like new trains I'm really impressed with that interior. The blanket instead of a duvet is a massive plus and the deal sealer for me! And thanks for showing the menu - useful to know. Nice way to get to Lake Constance.
I just LOVE these refurbished trains. ÖBB is really transforming the night train industry! The only thing I'm even more hyped for are the capsule single-mini-compartments ... 🤩 After seeing how outstandingly well-designed these refurbishments are, I cannot wait for the brand new carriages! I mean, just an example, but think of the top-bunk table and the control panel including even the toilet occupancy - isn't this outstanding!? Thank you for this awsome video! 😁
Vienna-Bregenz-Vienna. My old RJ or NJ route from studing to home. This is by far one of the most beautiful train rides. Through the plains of the donau valley and through the mountains. And cheap too compared to CH and DE. Back then it was mainly from the (still beautiful) Westbahnhof - but still a great ride. I miss it even.
The problem of the main station is that they built it too small with only 10 platforms. Original plans included a separate commuter station underground. This is especially problematic for night trains as they usually arrive during morning peak hours and need longer stopping times, so they need to be slotted in between the daily commuter and domestic trains. If overnight train travel continues to rise they might need to run some trains out of (or probably into, as evening departure times are less crowded) the old Westbahnhof again.
... which wouldn't be too bad for services that terminate in Vienna anyways. Even for passengers who need to change to other international trains there are decent connections between Westbahnhof and Meidling/Hauptbahnhjof (or Hütteldorf and Meidling/Hauptbahnhof). But yes, during the rebuild of the main station, unfortunately the underground car park was more important than a proper commuter station 😞
The picture you show from Götzis, shows platform 2 and 3, the actual building that belongs to the railway station is located on the other side of the train (platform 1) But you made a nice and informative video! I like your content! In Dornbirn you actually caught the weird CityShuttle, that exists because the ordered Talent3 fleet from Bombardier didn’t get delivered and the ÖBB tries to assure that they still provide the service of available trains according to the turntable… (so these old carriages are kept operating until the new/longer version of the CityJet (Siemens Desiro) will get delivered… The new/longer version of the CityJet should start operating in Vorarlberg in December 2022 (shorter versions of that train are already operating in other parts of Austria) Thank you for showing me, how i will travel through Austria in the future!
A few years back i came back to Budapest from Zurich in a 6 birth compartment on the NightJet.. it was definitely a "sardine can" experience. looking forward to traveling in one of these upgraded 4 berth compartments.
Lol! I was surprised to see a CAT coach at the other end of Austria, but then I remembered they used them for other routes during covid period as CAT train wasn't operating. It also surprises me that the train didn't go to Zurich, as they usually do.
Woww, great review my friend, really liked it! Travelling in Romania a lot as well with train, just been on my vacation in Vienna and a short stay in St.Polten. Enjoyed reseeing where I've been. Have a good one and good luck in the future, cheers!
Thank you. Nice overview, so far I have only seen photos/video of the stationary carriage, not in motion. The design is now with 4 fixed berths to save the staff the work of rebuilding the compartment. Technically everything should be working fine, considering they have just come out of rebuilding. Are there just the two toilets or also any washrooms? Other couchette cars have washrooms in addition (just a small room with a faucet) so you can brush your teeth even when the toilet is occupied. Sleeping cars don't need this, having a tiny little sink in each compartment. The newly built trains (to go into service next year) should have 4-berth compartments of the same design, plus mini-cabins, regular and deluxe 2-bed sleepers and some seating.
What a huge improvement, wow! Really impressed by this design. Sadly it'll not be for me, motion sickness is probably still an issue as the beds are still oriented the same relative to direction of travel. But this will be a game changer for nightjet and its brand. Now to change those 80s compartment seating carriages to modern open saloon reclining seats carriages and you really have a full train that'll feel premium and classy.
Very cool train! Though I'm amazed that in Austria there's no barrier between the train system and outside world. The parking/transit is literally in the front of the carriages.
I don't know if that's specifically Austrian, but it becomes especially apparent when using lesser-frequented, slower routes. My grandma has a railway line basically framing one end of her garden. They started to sell plots in this part of the village in the 50s and whoever moved there would quickly set up hedges to ward off the noise of the semi-hourly trains passing by. No other noise-prevention has ever been taken. In fact, the streets there didn't even have crossing gates until about ten years ago. Up to then, trains would whistle three times before passing a road. Interestingly, you just get used to it. After a few days you don't even notice the trains passing by anymore. In fact, there weren't even many accidents until tourism started to pick up in the region. Locals would just know when and when not to cross (or even walk on) the rails.
great video. look forward to trying the new ones soon.. have taken the night jet between vienna and zurich many times and am now frequently taking the one between vienna and amsterdam.
I am working on sleeper train services from the Netherlands to destinations like Prague, Budapest, Vienna and Stockholm etc. I have the 'pleasure' to still work with the 1960's carriages tho. Happy to see that it's slowly changing tho
Hi. Nice video! Well done. I just kindly would like to correct you: the vienna main station replaced east and south station (ostbahnhof and südbahnhof) but not Westbahnhof. The Westbahnhof still exists although it is less important now. Just to let you know…
Great video & impressive carriages. Curious: while fairly obvious why services between Vienna & Belarus/Russia are suspended, might you have an idea why Monaco services are also not operating..?
As Marko said, it was a Russian Railways train that connected the South of France to Wien, then onwards to Minsk and Moskva. France was not connected to Austria at all for a while, until the introduction of the new Paris train.
actually, the hauptbahnhof replaced the südbahnhof and the ostbahnhof (south and east station). west was never replaced, it is still standing, but with the opening of the lainzer tunnel from meidling to the west, trains from western austria are either terminating at hauptbahnhof or even passing through (since only westbahnhof is a head-railwaystation, süd and east were head stations too). oh, and north? it's now called praterstern.
Great Video! One very minor tidbit: I loved that you showed the stations via Google Maps, but unfortunately only connected the stops with direct lines. So for example, did the train follow the Westbahn route all the way, or did it cut through Germany between Salzburg and Innsbruck? The ÖBB website has a map feature that shows the actual route, if you ever plan to do another ÖBB vid. Great work!

I think Meidling should be rebuilt though to offer similar comfort.
@@astra1360 I don't have hard measurements, but get the feeling it even takes longer from U3 to the trains on Westbahnhof than U1->trains on Hbf.
Thank you so much for including the Taurus with the music scale!
Thank you for your train trip review. Nice ride through the Austrian Alps.
Glad you enjoyed pal! :)
Thanks, sounds beautiful, it's a lovely place. More like this to come soon!
honestly, this is the first vid i've watched on your channel and I love your train reports already. especially the voiceover, it legit sounds like asmr
Welcome, and thank you very much! :)
Excellent, intelligent commentary and editing. Enjoyed your journey!
Thank you very much, more to come! 😁
Great vid with excellent and informative voiceover. Gonna have to stick that one on an ever expanding list.
As you say, the cost may be high for a single passenger, but it is certainly good value for two or three people.
Thanks! And yeah, I think sharing with your friends is the way to go here!
@@FaradayBananacage team up with others and share the cost.
In Austria you can travel with your car on certain night trains
Feldkirch is an adorable town btw. I spent a year living there and know this route between Feldkirch and Vienna quite well. The best bit of scenery I think is when the train makes a big S swoop on the track east of Bludenz as you're entering the Klostertal (east bound). If you time it just right you can get a great shot of your own train and engine with the mountains in the background (provided you're sitting in a rear carriage).
Thanks for the review! Currently planning summer holidays so this will be super useful as I love rail travel 😊👍
Awesome, I hope you can give it a go in summer then! 😃
@@SuperalbsTravels Thanks very much! I hope so too 😊
Thanks for the great video and commentary.
As an old person who tires a bit quicker now, the Night Jets will become a more restful way to travel round Europe.
Thank you! :)
Excellent video & very professional. Great inclusion of the Google map to show the route.
Thank you! :)
Loving the new commentary dude. Really sets the vibe off!
Thank you! More like that to come. :)
Great video! I really enjoyed your use of Google maps to show the route of the train.I've never seen it done this way in other videos. This was my first video of yours, and I'll watch more. Good work!
Thank you very much, I'm glad you like the feature, and look forward to seeing your comments in the future. 😃
12:24 Wow those views are amazing! Great video! I hop you had a nice stay in Bregenz.
Thanks! It was a pleasant short stay. :)
Excellent voice-over. Very informative. Nice journey.
Thank you very much! :)
Nicely detailed video. As someone who doesn't much like new trains I'm really impressed with that interior. The blanket instead of a duvet is a massive plus and the deal sealer for me! And thanks for showing the menu - useful to know. Nice way to get to Lake Constance.
Thanks, it seems like a well thought out carriage to me. :)
I just LOVE these refurbished trains. ÖBB is really transforming the night train industry!
The only thing I'm even more hyped for are the capsule single-mini-compartments ... 🤩
After seeing how outstandingly well-designed these refurbishments are, I cannot wait for the brand new carriages! I mean, just an example, but think of the top-bunk table and the control panel including even the toilet occupancy - isn't this outstanding!?
Thank you for this awsome video! 😁
Thank you, I am excited too! :)
ÖBB rules Europe !!!
And I wish them well; a daring step in a niche-market have payed off.
Let this service be a vast money maker and ever lasting.
Tracks 1 and 2 are underground for commuter trains (Schnellbahn), though you have to walk some distance to reach them.
The picture you show from Götzis, shows platform 2 and 3, the actual building that belongs to the railway station is located on the other side of the train (platform 1)
But you made a nice and informative video! I like your content!
In Dornbirn you actually caught the weird CityShuttle, that exists because the ordered Talent3 fleet from Bombardier didn’t get delivered and the ÖBB tries to assure that they still provide the service of available trains according to the turntable… (so these old carriages are kept operating until the new/longer version of the CityJet (Siemens Desiro) will get delivered…
The new/longer version of the CityJet should start operating in Vorarlberg in December 2022 (shorter versions of that train are already operating in other parts of Austria)
Thank you for showing me, how i will travel through Austria in the future!
Thank you for the information and kind words! :)
A few years back i came back to Budapest from Zurich in a 6 birth compartment on the NightJet.. it was definitely a "sardine can" experience. looking forward to traveling in one of these upgraded 4 berth compartments.
Great video! Really well done and enjoyed the narration, hope you keep doing it for future ones
Thank you, I certainly will be!
Lol! I was surprised to see a CAT coach at the other end of Austria, but then I remembered they used them for other routes during covid period as CAT train wasn't operating. It also surprises me that the train didn't go to Zurich, as they usually do.
Amazing loving every second of the clip
Thanks so much!
I really like these trains, I enjoy travelling in them when I do. It also helps that I don't have to pay because I work for the ÖBB
That sounds great, haha!
First night train was the older, 6 person couchette, 2 days later had one of these, it was like heaven compared to the older ones
Yeah it's such a difference!
Wow what a modern train to travel on. I’d love to ride on that one day after covid times 😊😊👍👍. I love it bro
Thank you! I hope you get to ride it soon. :)
Very well done, informative and detailed!
Woww, great review my friend, really liked it!
Travelling in Romania a lot as well with train, just been on my vacation in Vienna and a short stay in St.Polten.
Enjoyed reseeing where I've been.
Have a good one and good luck in the future, cheers!
Thanks for mentioning bike onboard facility. It would be great if you mentioned this in every video. :-)
I will try where I have the footage.
Would be nice to know what the rules are for travelling with a bike. I know ICE trains don’t allow it. But every operator is different. :-)
Very nice trip with this train, its nice expirins 👍
It was, thanks! :)
Excellent video, very informative & professionally presented.
Thanks! :D
Thanks! It's just the two toilets in this carriage. I can't wait for the sleeper pods in the new stock.
Sad to hear, but it really is a nice experience now! Thanks for watching.
Very nice video nice to voiceovers again you should try the sleeper varient of the OBB Nightjet
Thanks! I have a video of the sleeper deluxe filmed to come soon...
@@SuperalbsTravels thats good then can't wait!

Fantastic mate I will do it in my quest to tick off all the nightjet routes
Oh good to hear, you must be rich? 😃

Why would that be a problem in civilized country?
great video. look forward to trying the new ones soon.. have taken the night jet between vienna and zurich many times and am now frequently taking the one between vienna and amsterdam.
Sounds great! Thanks for watching. :)
Interesting change of narration, from hard-coded text to voice over!
Hope you like it! :)
love the commentary
Thanks! :)
These look much nicer than the old 1960s one
They are a little bit more modern hahaha.
exactly the video i need. thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Investing in railways and trains would be greener than any other mode of transport
Love it! Great video!
Thanks!!
Woah! Superalbs face and voice reveal?? i like this new style of video as i had to keep pausing the video to read what you said, i like this better 😊
Great video !!
Thank you! :)
I am working on sleeper train services from the Netherlands to destinations like Prague, Budapest, Vienna and Stockholm etc. I have the 'pleasure' to still work with the 1960's carriages tho. Happy to see that it's slowly changing tho
"European Sleeper"?
IN the review of the bed, it would have been nice to know how long and wide it is.
Hi. Nice video!
Because it was the same train, Moscow - Vienna - Monaco - Nice.
@@markoobid2005 Ah! Thx!
As Marko said, it was a Russian Railways train that connected the South of France to Wien, then onwards to Minsk and Moskva.
France was not connected to Austria at all for a while, until the introduction of the new Paris train.
Services to Belarus and Russia were actually suspended due to Covid, but I find it unlikely they will return for a long time.
Taking the nightjet Innsbruck-Amsterdam soon, looking forward to it
Perfect! What type of room will you travel in?
@@SuperalbsTravels your vid has convinced me to book a 4 person Liegewagen. Looks nice n spacious :)
great video, love austria
actually, the hauptbahnhof replaced the südbahnhof and the ostbahnhof (south and east station). west was never replaced, it is still standing, but with the opening of the lainzer tunnel from meidling to the west, trains from western austria are either terminating at hauptbahnhof or even passing through (since only westbahnhof is a head-railwaystation, süd and east were head stations too).
oh, and north? it's now called praterstern.
Great work!
Unfortunately there's no way for me to do that without tracing the exact route by hand. I'll try and add a few routeing points in future though. :)
@@SuperalbsTravels Travellers can purchase the wonderful European Rail Timetable in print (preferably) or digital top have far more detailed information. It's a 'Bible' for rail users, and frequently updated. It's by six gentlemen who previously worked for Thomas Cook Publishing.
Hope to see these coaches in Italy someday
They can only go to Germany Austria and Switzerland. There'll be railjet like sets for Italy
I'm excited for the new sets!! :)
I think most travellers will find the mattress uncomfortable. Too firm and too thin. The power and usb sockets kept cutting out so come the morning, our phones and computers had barely been recharged. The reading lights for the top bunks are mounted in the ceiling and are non-adjustable. They're bright and point directly at the occupants in the bottom bunks.
On the plus side, our trains ran on time, the tasty hot and cold snacks were surprisingly affordable and the attendents ranged from good to fantastic.
Overall, I'd still recommend Nightjet. Next time I'll either pack a roll-up foam mattress or go for the full sleeper option.
Please try the new single person sleeping pods.
I guess they'll be selling well
Excellent video!! It will help us,because we are going to travel from Brussels to Vienna night train in August.

Is there any coup for the three person only?
I would love to know what photograhic equipment you used to make this very nice video.
Amazing trip.

Great report, thank you.
Just one little thin I’d like to mention: Hauptbahnhof replaced Südbahnhof and Ostbahnhof. The terminus Westbahnhof is still in operation but has been downgraded

Ciao!! Grazie!!
I booked a 4-litters couchette for our next trip on May 2023 from Wien to Milano, and I don't think I can experience these new wagons. It's a pity that we probably can´t travel on these renewed cars and have to face the older ones, much less modern and confortable. May be next time...
Sadly these carriages are prohibited in Italy, instead brand-new ones will be introduced in summer.
Very well made video 👍🏻👍🏻 you explained everything perfectly. What are the pricing for one full cabin? Thanks
Thank you! This varies, you'll have to check the ÖBB website.
"The deafening announcements" subtle British put down lol
How did you identity the train and the specific coach that was modernized? Are the modernized coaches listed in timetables?
It says when booking, you can choose 'Comfort-Liegewagen' or Comfort-Couchette'.
