    ÖBB with their Europe wide network of NIghtjet trains is now correcting all the mistakes that the other European train companies made during the last 40 years. One can't congratulate ÖBB enough for their wise decision, and I really hope that sleeper trains will be a regular means of transport soon.

      This makes transport options extremely convenient especially among EU member states.

      @@rescuemod Maybe I don't understand your comment. I know that Nederlandse Spoorwegen runs a really great rail network - I travel it a lot and i like it. My comment to this video was just about night trains - and I think that ÖBB is the leader in this business in Europe and I hope that the other companies will follow them or even excel.

      I kinda disagree as someone who has now taken exactly this train a couple times already. It's expensive- especially if you want some privacy. It requires booking well ahead of time. And the quality is really not that good. If you have any predisposition to motion sickness, laying on a bed perpendicular to direction of travel is killing. It doesn't help that nightjet uses 'refurbished' 25-45 year old coaches. While I agree that airline experiences aren't comfortable either (especially with the issues at Schiphol as well as across Europe now...), I'd say daytime trains are a good contrasting alternative.
      There's a big market gap for a more modern, streamlined experience here in Europe. Japanese/US style night trains would work much better for so many people. And nightjet has realized this. 30 new trainsets with single sleeping pods are apparently going to be introduced as early as next year.

      No thanks. As a Dutch person myself I would rather skip traveling with train from Amsterdam. Getting there from the South Netherlands is already a pain with extra costs outside train tickets, full trains and with alot of pickpocket between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It's pure hell traveling with bags. Rather travel to Brussels and jump to trains from there and its cheaper too.

    I use this exact train at least 3 times a year to get to Vienna to travel even further to Slovakia. It's relatively cheap for the comfort you get and they are pretty much always on time. The staff is always very helpfull and meeting new people there on every train ride brings so much fun along with interesting converstaions. I can truly recomend doing this trip since going to bed and waking up in vienna is such a relaxing way of traveling.

      Thanks for your post on this sleeper train journey that you and Paul have both taken. Can I ask if you find it easy to fall asleep on the train during this journey? i.e, if there is not too much 'sway' and ambient rail 'click-clack' noise that enters the cabin? It looks like a wonderful way to travel while being mostly asleep.

    About 40 years ago, we did a trip with my parents and 8 year old daughter to Austria and used Continental Motor-ail over night from

    3:17 just to precise: that might be specific to Amsterdam, usually you can access lounges with sleeping car tickets, no matter what class the base ticket is. That is definitely the case with ÖBB lounges.
    10:20 of course, these are all quite old cars, more than 30 new Nightjet trains with new concepts (like single sleeping pods) will be introduced next year featuring all modern amenities.
    11:00 Actually, you can lay the seats completely flat to be quite comfy as a bed, so it is an option if you are young and sharing the compartment with people you know.

    • @gilles111
      @gilles111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a Dutch Railway case, they specifically set the lounge access to first class international passengers only, you can't enter with a first class domestic ticket either.

    • @uncinarynin
      @uncinarynin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gilles111 All lounges in Austria are accessible to sleeping-car passengers. However their opening hours aren't always convenient: While it's fine in Wien or Graz, the lounge in Linz closes well before the last nightjets depart so you have to spend the time in the common waiting area of the platform or go to McDonald's.
      To make the NS lounge accessible I guess ÖBB would need to make a contract and pay ....

    @11:00 the seats do actually pull out/fold down to form a somewhat flat surface, covering the whole compartment. You can book a whole seating compartment for up to 3 pax for just 99€ total, so it's actually quite a good deal for youths or even families.

    CityNightLine (1995 to 2010 or so) used to have dining cars (the impressive "1000 stars restaurant") but they were only occupied in the evening and morning with several hours without business in the night. So they were abandoned even before the end of CNL. ÖBB never had dining cars in its EuroNight and nightjet trains, instead offering compartment meal service. The meals are warmed up in the little office compartments at the end of the car. It is one of the measures to make the nightjet make not too much of a loss. Another measure is to give the staff many different roles: The same person checking your ticket and taking your order is watching the departure of the train and even doing technical tasks such as coupling/uncoupling where required, cooking your evening meal and preparing your breakfast. The beds are pre-made during the day before the train departs.

    One important piece of information: if you are going to buy (as I stupidly did...) the flex option, very expensive for a peace of mind in case something happens and you want to change your plan DO NOT REQUIRE THE TICKET PDF until the very last moment possible. If you obtain the PDF you can't change the ticket anymore, and you've paid a very higher price for nothing! This information is not immediately provided, I find out when it was too late...

    Great video. Will be doing the reverse trip from Innsbruck to Amsterdam in 4 weeks time (only the fourth booking since the start of the pandemic so hopefully, this time I will actually get on the train). Is the final leg of an Interrail trip taking in Holland, Germany, Czechia, and Austria.

    Your train tickets & accommodations seem like "Business class" on planes, very nice & much cheaper than 1st class.

    7:41-7:58 All Brussels/Amsterdam to Innsbruck/Wien Nightjet trips use Main Spessart Bahn Aschaffenburg Lohr Wurzburg section via the Lohr Connector Line. Wien/Innsbruck-Amsterdam Centraal used to Terminate at Dusseldorf Hbf that's why when it had Autoracks Dutch Licence Plates are a common sight on them. Excellent Job Lucas

    I remember doing this exact same route back in autumn 2022 on the seats coach. You can actually turn the seats into beds, which I was able to do for we were only 3 people on the compartment.

    I agree with the comment about the booking info. I remember booking train rides from Graz to Vienna, years ago, and while I had some German, I never was sure what I booked. Certainly had no idea what the various options were because the words had no meaning. This was years ago, before Google and maybe it is better now, but I am not confident of that. Again, thanks.

    Great video Paul!! I took the nightjet two years ago, from Amsterdam to Munich. Just had a seat and it was occupied with six people all the way. So there wasn't much sleep on that trip (I found out that, I'm not the backpacker from 20 years ago😂) but it was fun!! This summer I will take the deluxe sleeper, to Austria!!

    I took the deluxe nightjet just over 2 years ago from Venice - Munich. It was worth every penny! The only downside is that we were woken up at 3am for a German passport check as we arrived into Salzburg.
