For those of us with Native blood..this was more than a movie. It touched our heart. It was a reality check. A wake-up call. And a reminder of how strong our people are..and how much we have suffered and endured. It doesn't matter if you're a full blood native or a 10 percenter. This movie is a lesson to us all that in the end..after all the tears..and anger..and bullshit..we are brothers & sisters. And we must stand together..or fall divided.
@@JusticeFortheSilenced Struggles come in different forms..but are just as painful. A native who isn't part of a tribe and doesn't have their brothers and sisters to back them up and protect them suffers greater at the hands of their enemies when they are alone.
@Nightbird Really? Because my Grandfather was kidnapped from his tribe when he was a small child by the US government when they decided the answer to the "Indian problem" was to "Christianize" them. They cut his hair, changed his name and beat him for speaking his own language. Natives today mostly live in poverty, they suffer with all kinds of issues from being marginalized. What have you and all the Elizabeth Warren's in the world suffered?
John Trudell taught us lots he was a reality humanbeing being very human, his whole life through understood by a few known by many. Who’s gonna teach the next generations? Are we lost? Time will tell. 🙏🏽
I love this scene. As Ray sits down , he's trying to come to grips with who he is , and you can see a headdress surrounding his head as he reaches for the pipe , beautiful : )
Fkn great scene✊ Watching this movie again now that im older makes me realize it really is like this in many nation communities. The tradish grassroot Natives versus the sellout Indian agents and oppressors.
One of my all time favorite movie scenes. And one of my all time favorite playwrights is playing the corrupt FBI dude. GF and I saw this movie on big screen at a dollar theatre, just before was released to video (at the time). We were so pleasantly surprised how good a movie this one is.
This movie and the Documentary "Incident at Oglala" came out withing months of each other. Both directed by Michael Apted, both featuring John Trudell.
John got to write his own lines in this part of the movie. In the beginning he turned the movie down because they wanted to cut a sweat lodge in half and John said he doesn't want anything to do with this movie if they do that.
The old man in this clip, (chief ted thin elk) playing grandpa sam reaches is playing a character that was based off Frank Fools Crow aka Grandfather Eagle Bear. One of the greatest holy men/healers/medicine men that ever lived. Breaks my heart when I see them crush his sacred turtle rattle. The younger Native playing Jimmy looks twice is real life John Trudell. One of the greatest Native activists ever. If you don't know who either of them are, look them up! Gives this scene so much more authenticity knowing who's playing the roles and who their roles are based on. Also nice that real life Native Americans were cast in this movie. This is one of my most favorite movies and its loosely based on true events. Lots of videos on YT with John's speeches! The force was strong in him!
I love it “They have to kill us” my mom was adopted out of Alaska and I grew up away from my people but that spirit is in my DNA! I fear no one! My grandfather grew up with the US military pointing guns at him in Alaska but everyone tries to say this happened four hundred years ago! No it didn’t!
The white put fire to his house with his pregnant wife and 2 children inside....what a terrible drama to go through He paid the high price for his resistance RIP John

Hope your journey here and it's hard lessons had led to your entrance to the Spirit world and fellowship with the Grandfathers..with humility I hope to see and follow you there Brother... There is a greater purpose in the end of our paths here in this world with its many man made atrocities.. I pray you have found the end of the old and beginning of your new path..and can walk in peace with Taku Wakan and those who have gone before and pray you wait for our arrival..the true family and one tribe..

True I'm fortunate to be one of the few full-bloods left, our population does grow but now carry more european blood these days. Lived both in the city and my rez, now I'm going back to my rez!
Is this a deleted scene? Because I dont remember watching it last time I watched the movie on TV, I just remember the old man saying "they broke my TV". I know that some TV channels remove scenes that involve violence, or for other reasons.
If people would stop looking at color and cultures maybe we as a people could get along. It's not right to treat a person different because of the person that they are.

I wish EVERY AMERICAN would listen to Mr Tudell's comments about WHO is really free!
Spoken by John Trudell, so real, nonfictional
"we choose the right to be who we are! we know the difference between the reality of FREEDOM! and the ILLUSION of freedom"
White Oklahoma Indians 😂😂😂 Idek what that even means
@andrew let me apologise , could you imagine a so to say "western world profiled" mind feeling highly intrigate by these spiritual experiences ?
@andrew are you talking to a deleted comment again? Because otherwise this doesn't make sense.

I've always loved this movie. Helped me face my feelings about my dad, who died when I was very young from the same cause as Ray's.
@andrew Yeah but the tribes were massacring each other all along though.
@@luvfreedom1470 That is what history is telling us right? But how do we really know. I doubt it was as bad as you describe it to have been.
My aunt dated John when I was a kid. He made such a lasting impression on me.
