This is literally what I have pictured my whole life when hearing "underwater basket weaving". I know logically this could not be the case but in my head there's always a person like 15 feet underwater for some reason surrounded by sea plants and fish just weaving away [holding their breath no less] with a few little bubbles blubbling up from them every now and then. I have wanted to see someone actually attempt this fully submerged since always. You have Fulfilled one of my life's dreams and I will forever be grateful to you for your service. I laughed so hard I cried and was so giddy and happy the whole way through this. The christmas movie in the middle was pure gold as well. Thank you so much for your creativity and the joy you bring to my life!

@@dbseamz Ability to float is influenced by the amount of body fat. The more body fat you have, the easier it is to float.
My mother discovered this while taking a WSI (Water Safety Instructor) class. They had a water survival technique that involved curling up into a ball to reduce heat loss, then straightening up to get your head above water to take a breath. My mother would curl up into a ball, but wouldn't sink. She was able to breathe normally because she floated so well.

This took me way back to my time at Reed College in Portland, OR during the early ’90s, as I think that Reed College might have formed the origin of the phrase Underwater Basket Weaving, which was taught in the college swimming pool. They historically have a yearly festival called Paideia where both faculty and students can offer short courses in areas they have knowledge about (such as Tarot Reading) but one course that was always offered every year was-you guessed it-Underwater Basket Weaving. Now to be certain-given the unusually quirky sense of humor displayed by Reedies-it’s possible that they just decided to take the common term and turn it into a literal course, much like you did with your video, but given that Reed was the first time I had even heard of it, I naturally assumed at the time that they originated it. I got the sense that the course had been taught there at least as far back as the 60’s, but I could be mistaken, as I never saw it detailed in a history of the college. However, I can assure you, it wasn’t for credit, and there wasn’t much charged as a course fee.

I love this energy, they are so fun and talented. I totally recognized Underwater Basket Weaving from my childhood and I'm 60. It then meant taking frivolous college classes to get an easy A. Now we know it's not easy at all! I wonder how old long that phrase has been around.

According to Wikipedia, the phrase started commonly being used (as a pejorative, not as an actual process descriptor) in the early-mid 1950s.
