    Can’t watch in full right now, but to answer the question; I have it as tight as I can get away with, but once I feel that first run, I open it up a little and then work it back in. If I feel the fish wants to go directly away from me I open it up, when I feel him having a look over his shoulder I tighten up again and pull the rod in that direction. I want the fish to feel like he has options!

      not from normal use. I have never worn out a single drag disk. But if u go saltwater fishing and hook some big fish on small reel and he takes off it can overheat and damage the felt. But freshwater fish don't run like that. All in all the user needs to do something stupid to damage it

    • @ifishcatfish

      These things have zero reasons to exist today. All they do is break down and ruin the entire reel. When u disassemble the reel that little spring there is a MAJOR pain to deal with. Also it adds cost to the reel. Small cost but cost. And of course it is one more entry point for water to go in. The drags today are so sophisticated that u can make ur drag to do anything u want.

  • @12345B
    @12345B 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Maybe this is irrelevant, but sometimes I take other considerations into account as well, such as short bites from trout, as well as to give shock absorbsion to the head shakes.
    (yeah i get more line twist reeling in with the fish but I fish with at most 20-30 feet so it doesn't matter I just trim it off at the end of a session)
    I guess in some ways drag setting is a forgotten skillset, mostly because of the bass fishing culture in U.S, even on a bass spinning rod you can horse fish up to around 5lbs pretty easy with the grossly overrated 8lb lines in the U.S, and on baitcasters I dont think anyone sets the drag for freshwater fish lol

  • @jimmywilson1388
    @jimmywilson1388 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You’re exactly right, reeling while they’re pulling drag is creating line twists. I prefer my drag a little bit heavier than yours but we’re pretty much on the same page. I also adjust my drag depending on the fish… We were crappie fishing recently and I landed a 6lb bass on 4lb test…😅 That was a freaking battle. Normally if you can grab the line near the reel and pull pretty hard and it doesn’t break you’re good. It’s just years of experience for me. The experts say 20%-30% of the line strength. Which would be 2 or 3lbs for 10lb test. I’ve never actually checked myself to see how close I am to the 20-30% but I don’t break fish off very often either.

      @@ifishcatfish Yes sir, exactly… I love hearing that drag sing…😃 I’ve got a tip for you also if you do have really bad line twists or if you put new line on a reel and it’s twisting up… Take everything off the line, just a bare line with nothing on it. Pull a few feet off and let the line dangle in the water while you’re trolling with the spool open… Let it pull a good bit off, at least as far as you’ll be casting but I let it go a little farther. Then close the spool and put a little tension on the line with your fingers and reel it back up. That will get rid of any twists and save you a lot of headaches…😅 I normally do all my spinning reels that I put new line on… I hope that helps you, it sure helped me several times.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes, i've seen that on youtube. I have a faster version of that - just cast very far, hold the line with your fingers tight, and reel it up. At the end turn the rod upside down and let it untwist. All the twist will be in front of your fingers
