    Here's a pretty insane fact I learned recently: it takes 4kWh of electricity to refine a gallon of gasoline out of crude oil. This means the Apetera travels 40 miles before the gallon of gas even gets loaded into the ICE car !

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      Yeah when people argue that EVs don’t actually help the environment, they forget this fact. Reminds me of that terrible Conway Ted Talk.

    • @gehrigornelas6317
      @gehrigornelas6317 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      And that doesn't include the energy it takes to find the crude in the ground, drill for it, pump it our, transport it multiple times, power the associated infrastructure, including the pump.
      I've heard a bunch of numbers for the kw for each gallon refined. Do you have a source on 4kwhr? I'd like it for a research paper I'm working on. Thanks.

    • @battery_wattage
      @battery_wattage หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gehrigornelas6317 looking in academic sites would benefit you more if you have access to those. Also it’s not literally using ~4kwh of electricity to create that gallon, it’s only about small fraction from electricity. The rest is generated from oil.
      A more accurate explanation is that it takes around 4kwh of energy (not so much electricity) to refine a gallon of gas. In other words, it costs almost 4kwh of crude oil to create about 30kwh of gas (estimated energy of one gallon of gas at 100% efficiency). That might seem like a lot, but remember that gas engines are only about 30% efficient, so it takes 4kwh to create about 10kwh of useful energy once you reach the tailpipe.
      All estimated information I provided can be found with easy google searches.

      @@gehrigornelas6317There is a study on the efficiency of US oil refineries that has an (upfront) conclusion of ~90%.
      Put together with the 40 kwh energy content of a gallon of petrol the loss at an average refinery equates to 4 kwh.
      For the study I will try to post a link, but it might get blocked.
      The study is called "Estimation of Energy Efficiencies of U.S. Petroleum Refineries" by Micheal Wang at the Center for Transportation Research, Argonne national Laboratories.
      You may also want to look at the other stats further down, which estimate a lower refinery efficiency (and thus higher energy input) for petrol fuel, but (slightly) higher efficiency for other fuels (including diesel and LPG)

    Thank you for this fantastic video. There are many cool facts and innovations about the Aptera in just this video alone. Well done asking all the right questions!
    * Lithium 12v battery located in the rear
    * Every 30 pounds added to the Aptera reduces range by 1%.
    * Aptera utilizes an SMS system for remote management, (similar technology as house electrical meters, gas meters and pagers etc.) using 3-4% of the energy compared to competitors' live data streams. (leading cause to phantom drain in other EV's it seems?)
    * No 4G-5G modem; internet needs are streamed from the phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto with the ability to connect to homes wifi.
    * Aptera's interior is 1/5 the weight of a comparable sized vehicle's interior with many less parts
    * Aptera owns the code for all individual systems throughout the vehicle allowing seamless communication, reducing bugs compared to traditional outsourcing.
    * Winter driving is not much of a concern when it comes to traction control or heating the Aptera because of its thermos like construction. Biggest concern is snow build up within the wheel pans.
    * Belly pan cooling vs. traditional radiator: A traditional radiator is a little lighter but it’s a little less efficient than belly pan cooling so its a give and take on efficiency between the two (early Aptera’s will have a traditional radiator)
    * Break-even point: 6000 vehicles/year; higher margins expected at 20,000 vehicles/year, with local body production planned.
    * Targeting 15-19% margin on each vehicle long-term.
    * Hood opens to access cabin air filter.
    * Mechanical latch inside for emergency door opening; no external mechanical access.
    * Aptera theoretically more efficient than e-bikes at highway speeds
    * (Possibly) Around 150 Wh/m at 80 mph.
    * ‘NACS’ originally named by Chris through petition in 2022.
    * Plans to gamify solar charging performance among Aptera owners in a 100-mile or so radius.
    * Separate removable glass SMC cover for serviceable parts; electronic latches, logo lights, knock knock sensor, window mechanisms etc.
    * trunk hatch has rain management with drain holes.

    Dude! What a great interview and showcase of the BINC! Great questions about the wheelpans, because I was thinking about the snow and if they have some engineers working in Europe on that, I look forward to seeing what they come up with. Maybe something that has some sort of venting out the back? Who knows. Would have liked to have heard what they plan on having for Drift-X. Will they have a display or will it just be Chris and Steve going out there and having presentations to see if they could line up any backers. So the belly cooling is being put off for the launch. That's fine.
    All the talk about taking out weight and having a more efficient system reminds me of the space program where they really needed to watch how much weight they could push into space. That's pretty neat.
    On another note, I was thinking that my garage faces south and is light in color, so I should be able to just back it out of the garage and with the reflected light off the garage, I shouldn't have to orient it in a East West direction. And if need be I can always plug it in at night. I hope that will be a feature as well and you can schedule the time it will charge when plugged in to take advantage of the off peak hours, but I'm sure they already do. And it's great to hear the software is coming along inhouse and with the contractor for the UI. Also great to hear about the way it will link to your phone and use that SMS? system that pagers used to use. Very efficient!

    This company is very transparent. I've seen many "startups" that talk a lot and probably have good intentions but never really show anything. Aptera is a serious company. I hope they start working on a four wheeler version of their car, as I believe "visual appeal" is 50% of marketbility. Okay, I just made up a word. But markeability, or the ability of creating a market for this product, has a lot to do with appeal.

    I have two ideas you can share with Aptera. 1. For greater heating and cooling efficiency. Hang a drape behind the seats to keep the conditioned air up front. 2. Head room is never rrally an issue on most cars. My concern is my eye level compared to the rear view mirror/screen. I am 6' 2" and sit very upright in cars. My idea is to move the mirror/screen to behind the steering wheel and in-between the left and right side mirror screens.
    In my many trips to the aito shows. I have not found a single vehicle the didnt have the rear view mirror blocking my line of site. I have come up to intersections with the mirror preventing me from seeing a semi truck coming from the right.

    With regard to the bike efficiency discussion - the calorie thing is funny and worth thinking about- however from a climate and 'pure energy use' standpoint the greatest source of emissions and energy consumption for cars is building roads and construction of suburban sprawl. The car (even an aptera) will always create vastly more carbon as long as there are car-sized roads and single family home construction. On the plus side, Aptera cars are a lot better than Teslas for city-dwellers without home charging.

      My Hope is that Aptera will have luxury models in the future to rival that of luxury brands.

    Some food for thought on efficiency: The most lightweight electric vehicle you could possibly get (and likely...would ever be made) is a self-balancing electric unicycle. An electric unicycle carrying one person going 25mph consumes about 25 wh/mi. If you think about that as the "ceiling" for electric vehicle efficiency, and the aptera is at 100wh/mi now...there's not that much more you can improve on!

    • @gbpg2016
      @gbpg2016 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One of those was built and confirmed at that efficiency.

    • @n.brucenelson5920
      @n.brucenelson5920 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not a ceiling for efficiency, because the energy lost due to air resistance can be greatly reduced and Aptera does so, even if it has a little more rolling resistance at low speeds.

    Next couple of days are the make or break it to find out the extent of our discretionary allowance this period. Prayers we can do the $2k more investment for the $1k off the price. That will make the case for upgrading as well to the 40 kw model.
    While I don't play the lottery, if I did won, I'd fund Chris and Steve's best dreams for this vehicle in a minute, but far, far better than a single gut busting millionaire would be a million buyers putting cash down for the vehicle.
    The pride the Aptera folk have for their child is palpable! Remember - it takes a village!

    The calculations for 85 mph with driver & passenger weight of 370 lbs, shows 164 Wh/mi or an approximate range of 302 miles with a 5% battery reserve.
    Something that doesn't seem to add up is the battery pack for the LE. Chris has said more than once that there are roughly 2,900 cells. The best combination I have found for 2,900 cells is 18s 27p / module (2,916 cells). If my math is correct, a 6 module pack will be 53.217 kWh. That doesn't match the 46 kWh that has been said is in the LE. (Each LMN-811 cell is rated at 3.65V & 5.0A.) If someone has better information / calculation, please let me know.

    For me efficiency is paramount so that is what attracts me to Aptera. So overall I love what this company is doing. I am disappointed in the decision of not using a heat pump which should be part of the efficiency strategy in my mind. It is not a deal breaker, but I really wish they would reconsider. I wonder if it would be too complex to add it post market?

    • @TailosiveEV
      @TailosiveEV  หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I ask about that in my previous interview. They want to but they’re much more expensive and not available off the shelf. The HVAC they chose for the launch edition is fairly efficient and very cheap. Long term they want to switch to a heat pump but if they wanted one on launch the wait would be longer

    • @KrinkenRohleder
      @KrinkenRohleder หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TailosiveEV Thanks! I still am curious about an aftermarket retrofit of a heat pump but I think that might be too complicated. I live in Southern CA so it is not that big of a deal unless I take it on a trip to the mountains. I was thinking about a camping situation where it got very cold.
