      They need an efficiency breakthrough, but it will happen. A combination of that and better batteries will really help make these mainstream. Independent power like solar or even a home wind turbine charging a power wall will help ease range anxiety. The biggest bugaboo is still the overall cost. $2500 per unit would do it.

    Nice, informative, fast-paced video! A couple comments... You quoted a price of $33,000. This is for the Launch Edition (full solar, AWD, 42 kWh battery/400-mile range). The base model is currently priced at $25,900. Also the pinapple leather console (and "funky net cup holder") was in the Gamma prototype but is not in the production model (replaced by an elegant metal assembly for the cup holder). See the Launch Edition render videos (or 7:48 in your video).

    A couple of corrections: Starting base price for Aptera is $25,900.... the $33K applies to the initial Launch Edition vehicle. Charging rate is 40-60 Kilowatt Hours, not kilometers. Great video otherwise and well researched!

    Nice overview of the Aptera. I like to point out that is not the fact that it is solar powered that is true advantage of Aptera, it is that it is so efficient. This efficiency is both because it is extremely aerodynamic, and that it has three wheels. It is also extremely light, but it could not be this light without being this aerodynamic, and the three wheels works with the light weight to make it even more efficient.
    The composite construction helps with the weight too, but the battery is a good portion of the weight, and the more range you need, the more the battery becomes the major part of the weight. So the aerodynamics is the most important part.
    With 10 miles per kWh, solar charging becomes functional and not just a way of trickle charging a few miles here or there. The Aptera CAN'T run on solar forever, that's impossible, but if you drive less than 40 miles a day, you don't need to charge. And if you drive more that 40 miles a day, well you still don't have to pay for a lot of it.
    There will be an option to take off most of the solar cells, and it will still be incredibly efficient and cost way less to drive than other EVs.

    I became aware of Aptera around 2008. Many thousands of people put deposits on them and in 2011 the company dissolved. I had seen the same thing happen with Elio motors. Then in 2021 Aptera was back and over 10,000 deposits were taken and every year since 2022 the production is pushed to next year. If next year we’re hearing that production will begin in 2026 I would conclude it’s never going to happen. I think the corporate officers are probably making a nice salary, and if the new company doesn’t make it they won’t be indicted for a ponzi scheme because they tried. I hope that they do succeed and that my concern is invalid and that everyone who gave them money will get a vehicle.

    • @gljames24

      Well, the preorders are in escrow, so they literally can't touch that money until they deliver the vehicles. Also with the current production intent vehicles finally being built, it's looking way more likely. The carbon fiber and fiberglass shells look great!

    @TB-up4xi หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    $33,000 is way overpriced for a hyped up sub compact 2 seater, 3-wheel autocycle.
    Hub motors have been around forever, despite your incorrect claim in the video, not only are they less efficient than inboard motors and a reduction gear they are also much more susceptible to impact damage and dirt and grime intrusion and require much more maintenance.
    You won't get anywhere near 8.9kwh a day from the solar panels - the maximum you can put on an Aptera are nominally rated for 700w total capacity and 610w effective charge capacity = around 3.9 to 4 kwh of charge maximum on the 22nd June on a sunny day in Yuma Arizona good for perhaps 40mi of range, the average year round in a sunny climate is 2.8 to 3kwh per day or 28 to 30miles. To acheive this requires the car to be outside in the elements from sunrise to sunset every day of the year, never in a garage, covered carpark, under shaded tree - assuming full sun 100% of the time.
    So you generate around 1000 to 1100kwh a year in absolutely ideal conditions with the panels, at 20c per kwh = $200 to $220 in generated electricty - the panels add around $3000 to the cost of the car - that's around 15years payback it's a complete gimmick, with all the hassle of making sure your car is in the Sun - meanwhile adding 3kwh to my Tesla model 3 takes around 15min at home and costs me 24c, Around 1min 10 sec at a DC fast charger and around $1.00 what a total waste of time and effort on the panels.
    A 1000 mile Aptera with current battery technology would require a 100kwh battery - I'll believe it when I see it.
    Finally the icing on the cake ....the maximum Level 2 charging speed is 3.3kw and the maximum DC charging speed for the Launch edition will be 40kw - that's completely unacceptable these days when the benchmark is 350kw, your average Tesla is 250kw and even the cheaper Chinese Evs are at 150kw, your 60kwh launch edition pulls up to a Supercharger and takes 1hour 15min to go from 10 to 80% meanwhile 4 Teslas have come and gone in the stall next door and the 5th is 1/3rd of the way through their charge to do the same thing.

    • @rchender
      @rchender หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oh you mean like a Porsche 911? or a Mazda Miata? or a Chevy Corvette? Oh I forget, they all have four wheels for extra weight and drag. And i'm so glad you've contributed your expansive expertise on the problems with hub motors. I'm sure Aptera has completely forgotten to consider those things....yeah, that's the ticket.

    • @artboymoy
      @artboymoy หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Do you hate getting something for free? If the sun is out, the Aptera will be able to charge. As far as charging goes, right now they're limiting the charging to 50kw, because honestly, the efficency of the vehicle is what makes it great. You will be able to go farther on a shorter charge and won't have to worry as much about cooling with the higher speed chargers. It will be nice not to have to install a high speed charger in the house as well, because a 110v outlet will be able to charge it at about 13 miles an hour. Car sits outside during the day and charging at off peak at night is the way to go.
      Seems like IWM are more efficient and better than just having an internal electric motor and I think the thing looks sealed up well enough to keep the dirt out. th-cam.com/video/RjISvISOW5Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Pkc2Asy4c4PORiV5

      Aptera have built prototype solar panels that met the desired estimate. I saw a video where one such panel was producing 80 Watts, and that was near sunset. It would have normally been producing 180 Watts. Just to do the math, that's at least 1.08 kW or 10.8 miles over the course of a day's charge. For one panel.
      More recently they have finalized their solar panel design and verified that they also work as intended. I'm assuming these are the same panels that will be used in production.
      The majority of the Aptera's power will come from it's hatch. That holds about half the total cells.

I also have an Aptera on order and am very excited (but patient) to get what I believe is an enormous game changer in the personal transportation arena. Some of the evolutionary steps that Aptera might take or could take are exciting, novel and may lead to some amazing developments both within and external to the vehicle industry. I'm a big fan of Six Sigma / Lean development and manufacturing and I see Aptera doing all the right things as Sandy Munro has stated. Room for improvements? Yep, but as we've seen with solar cells, battery tech and even electric motor tech, improvements will keep coming with the appropriate tech stimuli. To those who only look back or cannot see beyond the tips of their noses or who have zero patience, I say: "Don't buy one if you aren't convinced.
