But her voice is so dominant and refined that Vani ma could not modulate as greatly as Janakiamma did,to suit all the genres of music in Film playback. no one could raise to the expectations of music directors like Janaki ma did, as Ilaiyaraja once mentioned. Vani ma's negative aspect was her voice which is unromantic and not suited to film playbakc, thatis the reason why she concentrates more on bhajans these days.
Though I am a diehard fan of Vani amma, I agree with ur comment. But we can't simply say that her voice is not suitable for film playback, film playback is not only melody songs, her voice suits for semi classical, carnatic, devotional and sad songs in films. Even Janaki amma's voice not suits for many heroines. Her voice never suits with bhanupriya and kushboo. But for them she recorded many songs. When Janaki amma sings people accepts without any second thoughts but when Vani sings people r always there to find mistakes. No one can reach Vani's high pitch. In high pitch Janaki amma sounds shrill and screechy. Listen to her Kannada song Shiva Shiva Ennada nalige eke, then listen to Vani's Aanathi neeyara. U will realize my point. As u mentioned Vani's voice is heavy and nasal which is not fit for romantic melodies. But still she is a best choice for other genres of film music. Ilayaraja is the only music director who used Vani's voice for all types of songs. All those songs r super hits. MSV, KVM and Sankar Ganesh used her only for classical and melodies
