Penny Farthings aren't just museum pieces. They still race them, though they're still uncommon of course.

You forgot to mention Kirkpatrick MacMillan who invented the first pedal driven bicycle in 1842. It used a rod system that dove the rear wheel.

Funny how you don't give credit to Great Britain for the invention of pedal driven bicycle.

It’s too bad that DW ruin this story by being so nationalistic as to simply omit uk invention of pedal bicycle completely , are all their reports so wrong? You don’t see us denying Karl Benz and the motorcar....come on DW , credit where due please!

Wow, so we had literally nothing before the 1800s... Millions of years of not much.

They were the "precursors" to MOTORCYCLES... NOT "E-Bikes".

They were the precursors to both.

    • @Apis4

They were precursors to neither. DW got it wrong, that sim-le.
The first 'electric motor cycle' patent was issued in 1895, and in that year, the first production motorcycle, The Wolfmuller and Hillerbrand, had already been on the market a year. The bikes pictured here were all from around the First World War era.
      Thus, precursors to nothing.

Sorry! But the first bicycle was invented by a Scottish Farmer in Dumfriesshire in the late 1700s
