    You're showing the same patience with the W123 as you did with the Rover convertible and its an inspiration for all us car tinkerers out here 👍
    Your E-Class could one day turn into a desirable drivable classic if you carry on plodding away with it.

      @gosportjamie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I decided that wasn't such a great idea a while ago. Usually I drop screws like that when I've got work to do underneath the car as well, and then I end up sitting on them, usually pointy end up. At least when you're under the car you can't launch yourself into orbit, and you definitely know where the screw you dropped is, but overall it's less than ideal. Now when I'm working on fiddly things in the engine bay before working underneath the car I put a large magnetic parts tray underneath in an appropriate place to catch anything I may drop. Of course, sod's law being what it is, I generally don't drop anything then, and it's pretty much guaranteed I'll end up sitting in the parts tray, but I'm an idiot so that's not really a surprise to anyone...

    • @tonys1636
      @tonys1636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gosportjamie I was always being berated for keeping old carpets and sheets of old shuttering ply/particle board as often worked on vehicles on a gravel drive or unmade track to a barn/garage, often with a clay or cobbled floor. Dropping screws onto a gravel drive, invariably lost forever.

I have in the UK a W212 E class ( with engine management problems ) and like this example i am putting together my R129 SL its hard going but worth it. Ive had to repair the same area on my W123. The holes in the bulkhead had all started around the screw holes for the plastic wheel arch liner. Instead of using screws again I drilled the new holes and and used M5 bolts which I welded around the heads from the inside of the car to stop water penetration.

    Based on the horrors i've seen on these lovely old cars, how rust can be well hidden and only revealed when the rust proofing is gone, i don't like that you're spending so much time on one small part of the car, without knowing if the rest of it is even close to being okay. I guess it could serve as a cautionary tale for others if this blows up in your face, but i hope it doesn't. Would be lovely to see another 123 back on the road.

      I tell you guys.. I've known four people who've taken on a many years off the road 123. Three of them gave up after years of frustration and feeling bad over not getting their rusty cars fixed, and the last one paid a welder and a mechanic to fix the rust on his 240D, that he'd owned for quite a number of yeears. They did the work after hours and in a vacation, no taxes aso, friend prices. At the end he paid close to the equivalent of 3000£ to have the rust fixed, and the car dragged through our version of the MoT. This was back when a 123 wasn't even worth 3000£, and he then still needed a new cabin, all the outside trim, and a complete respray to have a decent car.
      I love these old mercs, but man you have to be careful when you consider taking one on. They are SO good at hiding how bad they are.

    • @peterdevreter
      @peterdevreter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meeh, from experience I know that a full restauration takes A LOT of time. 4/5 years when also handling a day time job. If you want this car properly restored you have to remove EVERYTHING. subframes, interiour, windows, the lot. Doing it this way he can enjoy driving the car while fixing small issues. After restoring 3 cars I would rather buy a descent one than sacrificing all that time. Anyways, nice merc and good job keeping it on the road.

    • @jo05dk
      @jo05dk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My theme/worry is "make sure that there is enough of a car to build upon, before investing hours upon hours in doing up one corner of the it". It's not about in which order which part of the job is done, to what standards aso.
      The financially smart thing usually is to buy as good a car as you can, no doubt. I suspect that this is a bit of a charity project. Matts eyed an oportunity to save a car, knowing that he'd have support for it through views and Patreon. To my eyes this car wouldn't otherwise be worth the hassle.

    Judging by the colour of the rust, it looks like this car spent a lot of its life close to a very wild coastline. The registration only revealing the county of registration, the dealers, may have been miles away from original owners place of abode. The usefulness of the old log books in having all the previous owners details in them, unless an exchanged book, was very helpful when buying a used car.

There have been a lot of Mercs at work - all under 12 years old, that are economically written off as the electrics have gone and components have failed. Rust may be gone but the overall quality is absolutely rubbish. Great video!

Also some has side fabric and for others some tarp could be improvised to shield the car from elements when it sits for longer unattended. You'll be surprised how easy this can be if you stop doing things to make it difficult. Stop cutting odd shaped holes in your car, your grinding disc is straight so cut a square out. Secondly make your patch first, lay it over the hole (making sure it meets with clean metal) the shape of your car still exists so it can be bent and hammered to lay flat. Mark round your patch then cut section of car out to suit. Much much quicker.

    Rust is a Bastard, ( once it starts and gets a hold ) very VERY Difficult to get Rid of!! And if there is any the testing station MOT ( WOF ) will find it for sure!!
    Probably would pay to check the same areas on the other side before going for MOT!
