    I remember the Voronezh incident being an item on the national news here in the UK. It was one of those 'And finally..' light hearted sections but they added that TASS, the Russian News agency, had maintained it wasn't a hoax. Whatever it was, I also recall that the story was even more chilliing with the trio taking an indiscreet and unchallenged walk around an urban area. They were accompanied by a giant robot that witnesses reported was occasionally looking into second floor windows. Brrr.

    You say: The majority of the UFO sightings were documented in the US. But as a Hungarian, I would like to break the silence. One of my ex-collegues told me one of his experiences, when he was a conscript in the People's Army of Hungary back in the Warsaw Pact era. He were patrolling at one of our military airstrips at a moonless night (maybe in Kecskemét, but I'm not sure), when a very bright, elliptical object has fallen on the sky, hovering over some MiG-21. He became frightened, but when some of the passengers (small slender figures with relatibely big head compared to their small size) of that... THING, he was panicked, and ran back to the guard's booth. He was signed a contract he will not speak about the incident to anyone - but still, he could. The People's Army of Hungary became obsolete, so he could break the silence. He told his story in a hungarian UFO magazine years later.

    As a Russian I'd like to point out that the Voronezh incident contains such a *vast* amount of well recognisable tropes and stereotypes from the Soviet science fiction media of the 1960s to early 1980s (well prior to the incident) that to me it immediately felt like one giant inside-joke. I'm not contesting anything but take every story of this nature with a pinch of salt.

      I'm wondering if it was because the beings weren't inherently hostile and may have assumed humans wouldn't be stupid enough to attack them, leaving themselves somewhat vulnerable. Their retaliation seems like self defense to me, and afterward they did whatever was needed in order to vanish. Many UFO reports involve craft and occupants being intrinsically connected, so maybe they were able to quickly repair it or maybe they dipped out of our dimensional plane.
      It's all speculation but fun to talk about.

    If you search for Moskva Times article “Little Green Men: A Look at the Official Soviet X-Files Investigation” you’ll soon see there were way more official involvement than one is led to believe. There were also unofficial UFO researchers active during the Soviet era working in secret, who went public after the fall of the Union.
    A fun fact is that science fiction was huge in the Soviet Union. Both in literature, film and TV. It was namely one of the very few ways to covertly criticize the regime. But the state owned media also produced a lot of sci-fi for propaganda purposes.

    In 1977, after the Petrozavodsk phenomenon, at the suggestion of scientist Anatoly Aleksandrov in the Soviet Union, a state program for research into UFOs called Setka (Net) was created.
    The program was officially established in October 1977. Two research commissions were set up to carry it out:
    Setka MO on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, which consists mainly of military personnel, and Setka AN, on behalf of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and consists of scientists.
    The first group was tasked with studying the military aspects of the problem, such as the possible influences of UFOs on the malfunctioning of military equipment and facilities, while the second group was tasked with studying the physical effects of UFOs and trying to understand the causes.
    The first commission was coordinated by Colonel Boris Sokolov, the second commission by Professor Vladimir Migulin, flanked by Dr. Yulii Platov as deputy coordinator.
    The work of the two commissions began in January 1978. Initially, it was decided not to use the term UFO, but the more neutral terminology of "anomalous phenomena of the atmosphere and space".
    Work continued through 1990, examining reports of about 3,000 sightings and interviewing witnesses. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, work resumed at the Russian Academy of Sciences with the aim of studying and integrating the available data; this phase lasted until 1995.
    The results of the Setka program were disseminated by Sokolov (Setka-MO coordinator) and Platov (Setka-AN deputy coordinator) with an article published in 2000 in the Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
    According to the conclusions of the Platov and Sokolov study, 90% of the anomalous atmospheric phenomena observed on Soviet territory could be explained by the impact of human activities (mainly rocket launches and meteorological balloons), while the remaining 10% are unexplained.
    For these latter cases, it has been suggested that the cause is to be sought in rare or as yet unknown natural phenomena.
    However, no evidence of UFO landings or crashes, or of close contact or alien abductions has been found; moreover, there is no evidence of an extraterrestrial origin of the UFOs. [Герштейн Михаил Борисович (Редактор): Судьина Н. Издательство: АСТ, 2007 г.]

    It's not that the US has the most UFO encounters, it's just that the US has both the press, as well as the freedom of the press, in order to report such things. Some of the best ones come from Central and South America, in my opinion. When people do bother to report such encounters, they have no issue sharing everything about it. There's no fear of humiliation when they do bother to share these encounters. If it's rare, it's only because most people don't report what your average farmer is up to in those areas.

    The problem with the 'mass hysteria' theories, is that there has to be something to become 'hysterical' about.. It never just 'happens', SOMETHING caused them to react, or see, what they did.

    • @genericpersonx333
      @genericpersonx333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You might want to spend some time looking at the works of people like Phil Zimbardo. There is a long history of experiments showing how relatively easy it is to convince people of something that literally never happened. Memory is amorphous and the "something to become hysterical about" need not actually have been anything but a single thought in the mind of one person that was able to spread throughout the group, conducted by the instinct of people to group together in perceived times of threat.
      An example would be the experiments done where there were two objects in a room with some difference. A dozen people would be sat in the room and asked if the objects were different from one another. The trick was of the twelve, eleven were told to claim the objects were in fact identical and to be adamant about it if challenged by anyone else in the group. The experiment was to see what the twelfth person would do when confronted by eleven other people convinced that there was no difference in the objects when the twelfth person's own senses could clearly see a difference. Long story short, a LOT of of those people left that room convinced that they must have been wrong about the objects being different because they couldn't believe that eleven other seemingly rational people could all be wrong and agree with each other. In other words, you can convince many people the sky is red if you get enough other people to convincingly say the sky is red, even when it is objectively blue. Mass hysteria, in many ways, is this same process only spreading quickly between sincerely convinced people, rather than having to have a bunch of people knowingly deceiving others to start the process going.

    • @jesusknight1
      @jesusknight1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@genericpersonx333 As far as that experiment goes, it just showed how badly peer pressure can make someone rational change their mind in public. The 'something' in this case is peer pressure, or public opinion. No one wants to be seen as nuts.

    I find it curious that whenever I read a report of a violent confrontation between humans and aliens, it is always us who shoot first. What's interesting about this particular confrontation is that the Russian force "determined that the alien craft was hostile", and used this as an excuse to open fire. What evidence did they have that showed the aliens were hostile? Personally, I think the troops where scared and just started shooting. We tend to behave like frightened cavemen when we're faced with something alien.
    The aliens shot the soldiers with a weapon that didn't seem to kill the men on the spot, but instead 'froze' them into the form of some kind of 'suspended animation' statue. Given the proper technology, it is possible we could reanimate these soldiers. This technology would most certainly exist with the aliens we provocatively first shot at.

      There was a more recent incident involving a train and ufo in Kentucky, where the locomotive crew saw some strange thing sitting on the tracks in front of them, and they hit it right when it was leaving the ground.

    Skeptical about the first one. My father is a railway historian and, from what little I know anyway, steam locomotives were all but phased out by 1985, as they all should have been replaced by diesel-electric (which were introduced in the 1920's/1930's)? If it is true that the engineers *were* operating a steam locomotive: my only logical guess would be that the USSR was trying to use anything at their disposal at the time, being that the inevitable collapse of the Union was on the horizon. (If they could not afford it economically, they'll use anything--even if it was outdated by half a century.)
    At least in North America, steam was already considered "historical" by 1985 and they only ran them for nostalgia purposes. (But hey, I might be totally wrong about Soviet trains lol)

      Most steam engines started being withdrawn around 1956 and some where still active to around 1980

    Whoa, I would like to see your source for the final story. I have heard this encounter detailed several times pervious to this one, and I have never heard mention of the aliens having any type of weapon. That's not how the story goes, I'm going to try to give you the benefit of the doubt and hope that you just found more info than anyone else has. Please send me a link to this source.
    Also you guys are great, please stick to a high standard, and stick to the facts as reported. These stories don't need embellishment. Thanks! Keep up the good work.
    P. S.
    In case anyone is curious the story normally goes that the aliens join hands and meditate or something like it until that shockwave is sent out turning everyone to Stone except for two soldiers who were hiding. And then the alien vanish.

      It sounds similar to an account I heard/ saw on an old documentary. A disc crashed in a clearing & there was supposed footage of the soldiers investigating. Trouble is all of the uniforms were utterly generic "Soviet Army" & one of the vehicles was an American jeep so the footage was clearly fake. However it could be that fake was inspired by this genuine incident.
