Dude so I'm from the general area and my grandmother is around the age of the people in the story. Country people who grew up in the woods of Kentucky would have known an owl. I'm not saying that it was aliens but I guarantee you they wouldn't have mistaken owls for little green men. Also, I asked her if she had heard of this story and she hadn't so no extra context.

I am from Ky, have lived here my entire life. I've heard so many different versions of this story. I've also heard that they wasn't aliens, they were creatures that lived in a abandoned coal mine. There is a abandoned mine close to the old homestead so who knows. Makes me want to check this out more !!
My uncle was from Tennessee, told me back when I was 19 (that would be 31 years ago) that he kept a rifle or shotgun in every corner of his house you lived out on a country farm outside of Watertown Tennessee.... He said he would be sitting in his living room and would look outside and see things staring in at him and my aunt.... They had glowing eyes, he described... But he said it happened all the time... That's why he had a shotgun or rifle in every corner..... Back when I was 12 years old here in Ohio, we were visiting at my other aunts house down in the city of Lebanon out in the country... Me my brother sister and cousins all went to the neighbor's house next door we chat about 8 people there at the time but anyway we are in different parts of the house just doing whatever I was sitting on the couch talking to somebody and all of a sudden the mother of the neighbor starts screaming she seen something staring into the kitchen window big yellow eyes all the men in the household started pouring out the back and front door with the womenfolk following behind and me being 12 years old I was the last one out.... They followed it to the edge their property where they describe it as jumping over a 6-foot chain link fence..... When we went around back of the house to wear the creature would have had to been standing the tallest man in the bunch was six foot seven.... And from the back porch with him stretching as far as he could he was 3 ft shy of the window so another words the creature would have had to have been at least 9ft tall.... Whatever it was they chased that day hurtled a 6-foot privacy fence....I remember that night and it was absolutely terrifying we were all terrified and the men were on edge all night just like my uncle was on edge when he lived down in Tennessee... These are true stories I swear by.... By the way my uncle was no conspiracy theory guy and he wasn't into UFOs or nothing like that...
I grew up in the 70's hearing that story, and it scared the crap out of me. If it was aliens who crash landed maybe they wanted help, and all they got was guns and hostility. However, some beings may have evolved without war or personal conflict or hostile action being taken towards them by predators maybe due to an evolutionary process that made them toxic to eat. It's at least a couple of explanations as to why they wouldn't expect to have hostile action being taken towards them. Not every being is automatically hostile, as in the case of beings that have never seen humans sometimes either just flee from or ignore us when entering their territory.

Yep, it sounds like pretty advanced tech, which would be necessary to achieve this level of space travel. Might even explain the floating, depending on just how advanced it is. But that could also be a difference in gravity? It could be stronger on their homeworld.
NASA says they are trying to create a prototype of a "skin suit" astronaut suit, which would be a lot less blulky than what we have now. If aliens are visiting us I wouldn't be suprised if they were wearing some kind of high tech skin space suit, after all it's not like Elon Musk is just going to go strolling across the surface of Mars in buisness leisure.
The 20 gauge shotgun might have been more effective, but its comparison to the 4-10 shotgun, while greater than the smaller gun, best thought of as a starter for children, is only good for smaller game. The .22 is notorious, a well placed shot is lethal, as the bullet bounces off bone and can ricochet inside a body, its not known for stopping power. If the goblin were human they still could have run off from shots from these guns, though they'd be needing medical help fast. The family was woefully under armed in this encounter. Its reasonable to say the shots could be survivable, and therefore not proof of alien intrusion. Still... Intriguing. GSW's would have been reported by healthcare workers, as outlined by law, and would have pointed to human incursion by even a quick investigation. I'd need more evidence before drawing a conclusion. I am from Ky, have lived here my entire life. I've heard so many different versions of this story. I've also heard that they wasn't aliens, they were creatures that lived in a abandoned coal mine. There is a abandoned mine close to the old homestead so who knows. Makes me want to check this out more !!
My uncle was from Tennessee, told me back when I was 19 (that would be 31 years ago) that he kept a rifle or shotgun in every corner of his house you lived out on a country farm outside of Watertown Tennessee.... He said he would be sitting in his living room and would look outside and see things staring in at him and my aunt.... They had glowing eyes, he described... But he said it happened all the time... That's why he had a shotgun or rifle in every corner.....
Back when I was 12 years old here in Ohio, we were visiting at my other aunts house down in the city of Lebanon out in the country... Me my brother sister and cousins all went to the neighbor's house next door we chat about 8 people there at the time but anyway we are in different parts of the house just doing whatever I was sitting on the couch talking to somebody and all of a sudden the mother of the neighbor starts screaming she seen something staring into the kitchen window big yellow eyes all the men in the household started pouring out the back and front door with the womenfolk following behind and me being 12 years old I was the last one out.... They followed it to the edge their property where they describe it as jumping over a 6-foot chain link fence..... When we went around back of the house to wear the creature would have had to been standing the tallest man in the bunch was six foot seven.... And from the back porch with him stretching as far as he could he was 3 ft shy of the window so another words the creature would have had to have been at least 9ft tall.... Whatever it was they chased that day hurtled a 6-foot privacy fence....I remember that night and it was absolutely terrifying we were all terrified and the men were on edge all night just like my uncle was on edge when he lived down in Tennessee... These are true stories I swear by.... By the way my uncle was no conspiracy theory guy and he wasn't into UFOs or nothing like that...

I grew up in the 70's hearing that story, and it scared the crap out of me. If it was aliens who crash landed maybe they wanted help, and all they got was guns and hostility. They seemingly didn't try to harm the people in the house, if anything they were pranking them by appearing at the windows etc. I'm looking forward to part 2 :-)

One even reached down from the edge of the roof, and grabbed a handful of one guy's hair. Basically, what started out as "We come in peace" became a game of "Let's fuck around with the primitives". Of course, the people in the shack didn't find it amusing.

Do some proper research on the flatwoods monster and you'll find out it was just a barn owl reering its wings up and staunching its head low, they do it to scare off predators.

Thinking like you has also done pretty great things like science fiction and alternate reality books; Art etc. But in conjunture with something like this (cryptid sightings) after awhile it's just a little sad. Everything that happens has a logical explantion, but sometimes science just needs to catch up.

@Lakers fan From our perspective (as in the human perspective), you're absolutely right. However, some beings may have evolved without war or personal conflict or hostile action being taken towards them by predators maybe due to an evolutionary process that made them toxic to eat. It's at least a couple of explanations as to why they wouldn't expect to have hostile action being taken towards them. Not every being is automatically hostile, as in the case of beings that have never seen humans sometimes either just flee from or ignore us when entering their territory.

Yep, it sounds like pretty advanced tech, which would be necessary to achieve this level of space travel. Might even explain the floating, depending on just how advanced it is. But that could also be a difference in gravity? It could be stronger on their homeworld.
NASA says they are trying to create a prototype of a "skin suit" astronaut suit, which would be a lot less blulky than what we have now. If aliens are visiting us I wouldn't be suprised if they were wearing some kind of high tech skin space suit, after all it's not like Elon Musk is just going to go strolling across the surface of Mars in buisness leisure.

The 20 gauge shotgun might have been more effective, but its comparison to the 4-10 shotgun, while greater than the smaller gun, best thought of as a starter for children, is only good for smaller game. The .22 is notorious, a well placed shot is lethal, as the bullet bounces off bone and can ricochet inside a body, its not known for stopping power. If the goblin were human they still could have run off from shots from these guns, though they'd be needing medical help fast. The family was woefully under armed in this encounter. Its reasonable to say the shots could be survivable, and therefore not proof of alien intrusion. Still... Intriguing. GSW's would have been reported by healthcare workers, as outlined by law, and would have pointed to human incursion by even a quick investigation. I'd need more evidence before drawing a conclusion.
