Yea it's a loan but there are multiple ways to look at it. Every loan comes with different perimeters. Home loan, car loa, credit card loan, student loan, loan shark lol they are all loans. but they are all very different.
360 deals aren't knew those were the standard deals in the 50's and 60's, they became out of date because the label had too much control over artist lives that they could work you damn near 24/7 because they had the power to use you likeness however they please. That's why so many acts would put on 3 albums in a year which meant you stayed in the recording studio for long periods of time and then you had to promote the album so you were on tour for 10 11 months out the year, many artist were exhausted and drained so that's a major reason why 360 deals became obsolete
