3 Days Alone In The Woods - Solo Woodland Camping with my Dog - Shelter Furniture & Cooking A Feast

  • Having completed the roundhouse with Mike from Ta Outdoors, I decided to spend a few nights camping alone in the woods with my dog Amber. I used an axe, saw and a knife to build some furniture - a couple of tables - and sorted out a few things around the camp whilst feasting on some great food. On the first night I cooked some food over the fire (lamb kebab) using a piece of fresh hazel that was sourced locally. Dinner for the second night was fresh prawns cooked my favorite way - butter, parsley, garlic & hot sauce. Was it tasty? Let's just say it was amazing!

WE were taught in Scouts to never use soap on a cast iron pan. it strips off the protective patina and opens the pan to rust, and will allow the food to stick to the pan. Always wash with hot water and some plain unsoaped copper wool.

    • @FreezyAbitKT7A
      @FreezyAbitKT7A 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sometimes you do use soap. What if you dropped your pot in a vat of liquid cattle manure? Or used as a commode, spittoon, emesis basin...? Scrub with soap/hot water, rinse really well, boil, re-season.

The pine cones on the table is what attracted me to Mike's videos.. it sets the mood against the firelight. Great touch! It almost felt like I was sitting with you two with the clear quality from your new camera.Tyler (my 9 yr old) was watching with me. I ran my hand across his forehead while he lay in my lap watching... I said "Ewh your forehead feels warm." He said " What do you expect Mom? I am laying by the fire!" What a great little memory made to this video. Thanks for the Beautifully made food, ambience and company. Loved it Dustin, as always... kisses to Amba!

I usually stick to steak with red pepper and onions/garlic and bacon & eggs for breakfast. If there's enough bacon grease, I cube up avocado and fry it in the bacon fat before I drop the eggs on.

When I was in the Scouts (BSA), we used to make a recipe we called "Blind Boy Eggs". To this day I always make it at least once while camping whenever I get out, even if just for one night. There are a ton of other things I enjoy, but that is the only one I do every time...

We do a family reunion kind of camp with about 20 of us. Some have RVs or pop up trailers. My wife and I like our tent with a large queen size air mattress. We have cooked marinated chicken for everyone but with covid it was only a few of us this past year so I took porter house steaks. My cousin made her au graten potatoes. Last year I took my smoker and did ribs for all plus a big pot of corn on the cob. So we feast at camp. Love your videos!! Keep them coming.

@@IamBATMAN2024 Ever tried using a greenhouse to get a earlier start on your melons? We used to make these make shift greenhouses in Alaska. The green houses were only 2-4 feet high and made of 1/2" PVC piping and clear plastic sheeting. Basically a mini greenhouse. If you need to tend to the plants you just prop up one side of the greenhouse with a stick. The side benefit is it keeps bugs and birds off the plants besides keeping them warm.

Gotta love Amber stealing the scenes! A favorite meal for the first night is shrimp pasta in garlic cream sauce, I make it up at home, vacuum bag it, freeze it solid, then just boil the bag in water at camp. I often will vacuum bag several meals and freeze them to help keep each other cold during the trip. If the weather is warm I'll freeze a giant porterhouse steak and it thaws perfectly just in time to throw on the campfire. Mostly I do a lot of canoe camping so I can carry a cooler which doubles as a seat when there are no handy logs around.
Count me for another who loves that ax!

My first bush camp was at a Lake Suzie in the Eldorado National Forest in California, USA. It's a 2.5 mile hike in from the trailhead. Now in those days we didn't have freeze-dried or dehydrated foods. What you carried in came in a can, which is to say our packs were substantially heavier than today (besides the fact they were canvas sacks on a wooden rack). Anyways, my grandfather would fix a meal made from a can of Beef stew, a can of potatoes and a can of mixed vegetables. He called it Gobbledy-Gook, Cooked in a cast iron pot over an open fire, it was Good Grits! Now, 61 years later, it is still a staple for every time I venture out into the wilds. every bite reminds me of of my first trip. Yep, camping is all about cooking. That is what I love about your videos.

Great Video man. Good Meal. The Prowns. Prowns and Lamb are may favourit after Deer meat. You should try to ad some limon juice and ginger to it. A tasty sensation in your mouth. When I go camping I bring salted fish. Cut op some garlic, some sjalots, tomato, ginger, and some parsley. Some spring onions as well. First coke the fish in hotwater to remove the salt. Than bake all that I cut up, in olive oil, than ad the fish. After I cookup the fish in hotwater i wash it with cold water, remove the bones and then break the fish and squese it. So bake the garlic, tomato, sjalots, spring unins and so, ad the fish. Ad some limon juice, a bit of soy sause, ad some pepper. You can use chlli sause if you like. Let it sudder a bit And then eat it with rise or bread or wraps.
Enjoy. Cheers. Vince. Redman in the Woods.

Dustin, I'm in Canada. when we are at our shelter, the first thing we do after we unload is set the snares, for rabbit. We also trap wild bush turkey. Not a fan of Coons and Squirrels. We have picked up duck eggs and had those with bacon for breakfast, that doesn't happen often. We also do a fair bit of fishing, and crabbing. By the way, the crabs here are much bigger than what I saw on your video.

You always do such a great job with your food. Simple but completely enticing. My mouth was watering over the prawns. You asked what we cook in the woods and no trip for me would be complete without baked goods from a Dutch oven, reflector oven or dry baked in my cook-kit tins. Fresh bread, biscuits, cobbler, coffee cake and the like are so good when your in the woods.

Awesome coffee table. The pinecone candle holder reminds my of Mike's pallet wood cabin, I love it. ❤

You know if you do multiple layers of white wash on the walls and the Inside of the thatch it will also somewhat fireproof it along with making it lighter Inside making it better for filming

You know what would be cool? If you leave somethings at the round house, on one of the rainy days make yourself a bigger cutting board. When we went camping it was in the Gulf of Mexico just off shore of Florida no one around but us, and we would fish and cook fresh fish fried in butter. Best tasting thing you can put in your mouth. And hello from Florida.

Usually have some fried eel, hophouse 13 beer, venison burgers with guelder rose berry jelly, home made champagne, coffee, double decker chocolate bars and a cigar.
