  • This week I wanted to share my experiences as a foreigner using the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK. Specifically, I've been living in England for the past 4 years and here's how I've found the NHS so far as an expat living in England.

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

Let's settle this once and for all: Doctor or GP?

The UK has a health service, the USA has a wealth service.

Im my experience the majority of NHS healthcare employees are amongst the most caring, dedicated and hard working people you will find anywhere. If you ever have an issue with the the NHS blame politicians and management, not those on the front line.

You gain a whole heap of respect for the NHS when its saved your life-twice and cost you very little.

I'd like to see free movement between the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. It's ridiculous to me that you have to have a visa to be here.

mt 3yr old granddaughter was admitted to a local hospital with necrotising pneumonia with a hole the size of a golf ball in one of her lungs. She was so ill she was bluelighted in an ambulance with a specialist doctor and nurse by her side during the journey to a specialist London hospital. She spent over a week on life support and one to one nurse 24/7. another three weeks were spent there with a drain in her chest. She recovered ok and was discharged, being seen several times back at her local hospital by paediatricians for routine check ups. The cost? nothing, zilch, zero. My daughter was distraught when she was first admitted to hospital and the last thing she would have needed was an enormous beill at the end of it. The NHS is far from perfect heaven forbid the day it`s abolished. Regarding the NHS surcharge: just come across the Channel in a dingy and your`re done.

The NHS is not really a national service, it's a series of trusts. Some trusts are run better than others and different trusts put emphasis on different things. For example, I live in Sussex where the mental health care is pretty bad. One of my brothers is a schizophrenic and lives in Gloucestershire in order to get good mental health care. He now has the proper diagnosis, proper medication and even a social worker to look out for him. I get angry that he has to live so far away from his children and the rest of us to get proper care but that's just how it is.

In Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 all our prescriptions are free. Even the £10k a year injections I need for my arthritis. Also 911 does work in the UK. I know in my local hospital it costs about £1200 a day to run one bed on a ward. A lot of people don’t realise how much it costs to run a hospital. I also know (mostly for the welsh people) that if you go to your GP or hospital and ask for a prescription of paracetamol it’s about £20 it costs the NHS. So stop it and go and spend a £1 and buy some.

Canada here. I am extremely happy with our version of NHS. The care I receive is exceptional. However it is under attack from the Conservative Right who would prefer a "for profit" system. I needed to use NHS when I visited back in May 2018 and I was very happy with the service. The one difference between Canada and the UK is the use of letter communication between doctors and patients within the NHS system. Here in The Colony, we never receive such communication. It is always face to face. I could not imagine (for example) receiving a letter from my Doctor telling me that I was diagnosed with a terminal illness - I think that is so cruel and impersonal. Just sayin.

The only tiers on prescription are free for certain items and for certain groups (old, young, unemployed etc) and the £9 standard fee. The £9 is a flat fee no matter what you need, or how expensive it is.

The number 999 was chosen because, in the days of "proper" phones with a dial, it was difficult to dial accidentally; also, it was easy to dial in the dark or if you're blind, say.

Just like in Canada, you will never get some health insurance official deciding whether you live or die, I love our health service.

I lived and worked in the USA for 14 years. I am now back in the UK, retired and very thankful for the NHS.

August 2019 I suffered a heart attack and if it wasn't for our fantastic NHS and staff I would have been sat here today watching your video. I'm sure it's the envy of the world.

So good to hear such rounded review of our NHS - and reminds me that even though it has its wrinkles it is amazing. And even more so at the moment. Big shout out to all of my former colleagues in the NHS who watched this!

I’ve had two kidney transplants(both failed 😢), three stints in intensive care, eight years and counting on dialysis and recently a heart valve replacement. Total cost £0. Gotta love the NHS. They’re keepin me alive to see my daughters down the aisle. Special mention for all the nurses out there. The Consultants might make the decisions and the Surgeons may do the ops but it’s you nurses who get us through it. Always trying to keep us positive with a smile on your face regardless of whatever shit might be goin on in your own lives. Absolute Angels every single one of ya. Thanks so much. PAY RISE! 😡
