  • As a Canadian living in England, it was only a matter of time before moving back home to Canada (even if it's only temporary). This week, I wanted to share some reverse culture shock moments with you - weird things I've noticed about Canada after living abroad for so long!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

I remember visiting the US and seeing those medical adverts for the first time, I found them amazing. My favourite was a medication for people that have sore feet and one of the side effects was "sudden premature death"
I couldn't help but think I'd rather just have a sore foot.

The reason why (and Tom Scott has an excellent video on it) is that in the UK it is illegal to recommend medicines unless you area Dr *and* you have proof of what you are advertising.

The book is his reverse culture shock upon returning to the US after being away for 20 years. (He has other humorous books about living in England.) Advertising prescription medicine is illegal in Canada too. No Canadian television channel will have them.
Advertising prescription medicine is legal in the United States. Since a large number of American television channels are available as part of Canadian cable or satellite TV packages (or even via antenna reception since most of us live close to the border), we get to see the American ads. Each country regulates their own networks.
Most Canadians don't care for the pharma ads to say the least and it isn't unusual to hear people mock them. We're on the same page as the U.K. and Europe on this issue. The neighbours aren't.

Reverse culture shock is far more than those "little differences", it can be emotionally painful. Once you have moved abroad and returned home, "home" is never quite the same place as the one you left - you have changed and so your relationship with your home country changes. It is actually far more disturbing that the culture shock of moving abroad in the first place. Some never totally recover and end up returning to the place they left.

@Evidence based analyist Yep, same here. I spent a few years living and working in The Bronx. By the time I decided to come home to the UK I found I had had two home countries, and missed NY as much as I missed the UK when in the US. I can be homesick on either side of the pond!
One does find that one is a novelty overseas, and in the US people always ask us Brits if we're Australian (or at least that's what I found, a year or so after Crocodile Dundee had taken the country by storm and introduced Americans to an entirely new concept: Australians. You probably find Alanna that the British announce to you confidently that you're an American, unless they hear you say "aboot".
Please could you tell me if you have an NHS in Canada, or something similar? I heard that you do, and that Americans pop over to use it occasionally. When I was in the US people spoke disparagingly of our 'socialized medicine', as though it was a Soviet concept, despite the fact that American police, fire service, roads, street lighting, meteorology, parks, military and a hundred other things are 'socialized'. I was surprised how negative many people in America were about our system, and how staggeringly high their medical insurance payments are, the poor things. I'm not even sure about the quality of healthcare they receive, having been on the receiving end of it a couple of times. Maybe though I was just unlucky. I hope so given the cost of their healthcare. I love America and American people, and truly feel they deserve so much better. Ah well, hopefully after this Covonia (or whatever it is) is done with Americans will realise that they have been badly treated by medical companies etc, deprived of a generally humane system, and join the civilised (or socialised, ha ha ha ha) medical world.

Were I the kind of nationalist (ie supremacist) you are, where I found myself, my country, and it's people, were being far better represented before the world by someone who would rather live in another country.
