Next improvement would be a fence jig for your drill press so you don't have to mark each one individually

As I have just acquired some handle templates and some walnut, your hold down clamps for the jig is a great idea. I'm going to utilize it for my templates as I agree this is far superior to attaching the template to each individual piece no matter what you use.... Thanks for sharing a great idea.

Since you are running a business here are a couple of tips. Keep hardwood off cuts in cardboard boxes. These are easily sold on Craigslist, adding to your income and subtracting from the cost of handling and disposal. Same goes for sawdust. Gardeners and farmers use this as compost. Put it on Craigslist and someone will take it off your hands. Alternatively, heat the shop with a small sawdust stove. To put it in perspective last year my offcuts netted me 870.00.

Some wood species are toxic to gardens and livestock. Walnut shavings and sawdust will cause problems to horses’ hooves, for example. Please research which wood chips are safe for organic gardening too. Be safe.

Thanks for posting this (and the 1.0 version video)! You guys are my muse and inspiration for my own attempt at starting a table company; I've been following you from the beginning and jumped in a few months ago. I'm building three of this jig, each with a different handle, for my own boards. Like you, I find that taping templates to the stock and shaping is a huge time sink. I hope to see the same success that you are creating!

    Three things.
1.if you're doing batches that are all the same width, I'd make the bases, where the toggle clamps are mounted, so they would be the exact width of the board. This would make squaring it easier
    2. I would change the shape of your handle entirely. More of a rounded end with a narrower neck leading to the board
    3. Build a jig for the drill press and stack boards there to drill two or three dowel holes at a time.

Love watching you progress and sharing your journey. One suggestion that I might have is that on the bandsaw you could use magnetic stops ( I recently started using MagSwitch) and I love mine, but it would act as a stop so that your workpiece would register against that and thus possibly optimizing your process.

Now, figure out how to stack two boards at a time for drilling pilot hole and bandsaw... and bam 22 boards in 1 1/2 hours (just guessing). in other words, the jig should hold two boards and then make so the jig with the boards fits into another jig on the drill press for the pilot hole (no tracing) and then slide the jig with the boards along a fence on the bandsaw for the two waste cuts. Then your only hand guided task is the routing! Hope this helps. P.S. You've inspired me to start a channel... Life Happens Let's Fix It.

Nice job, it's a huge improvement over version 1.0.
It would be cool if your handle template consisted of 3 pieces, rather than the 2.
    1) Lockdown sled.
    2) Bandsaw cutting template (also keyed as you have it).
    3) Routing template (also keyed as you have it).
The difference would be that you could have multiple different handle styles that would all attach to the same lockdown sled.
Then for each handle style, you'd just have 2 templates (1 for the bandsaw and 1 for the router).
Or I guess you could just have a different jig for each handle style, but this would be a little more flexible to allow you to quickly design and implement a new handle style.

So I'm seeing this right after I watched your 1.0 video. For the hole drilling, it might be better to just build a positioning jig for the drill press, assuming the boards are the same width. Or really, just a fence set to the appropriate depth and a stop block to the proper width and you can just toss up a board, drill and move on. No need to measure and mark. Loving these vids.

To help with placing your makers mark, place it on a jig that has the iron in a clamp style arm. I thinking like a drill press type system with the iron taking place of the chuck.. That way you don’t have to hold it by hand and with the proper placing of the support pieces each mark will be in the exact same place.

Connect the toggle clamps on each side with a wooden bar then instead of four toggle clamps to push down you can clamp both sides at the same time.

Not sure if this was brought up or not in your past videos. But can you make a video on how do you deal with taxes at the end of the year. What do you do for health insurance. How do you guys put away money for retirement. I'm right on the edge of taking woodworking fulltime. Just want to know how u guys go about it. Would be helpful to me and I'm sure others. Not trying to ask for your private information. But just how u do it. Thanks

We set percentages of our income aside for those things. Look at your YEARLY expenses, then set aside a proportional amount of profits from every job. For example, we set aside 30% of income for taxes, 10% for health insurance/emergency fund, etc. If we need more money, then it's time to pick up the phone and make some sales!

I have a jig where I can cut 20 boards at one time with my tablesaw
Flip it 90 degrees that the handle is on the downside and cut it like that as one stack. You just have to rotate it four times and you are done.
I have a old industrial Felder tablesaw with a cutting depth of 200mm. But you can use your bandsaw an build an stack of 5 board or 6 at once.
Than try a complete different router jig.
The jig ist fix on the router itself like Stopblocks on your saw.
I would assume that I need for 20 boards 15 minutes cutting and routing and boring.
Boring is the last part an I have a jig an make 3 boards at once.
I love your content an your improvement's so stay sharp an think twice.

Why are you using such a wide blade in your band saw? The narrower the blade the tighter radius you can cut. I normally have a 1/4 or 1/8 inch blade in my band saw. Unless you do a lot of resawing then you need a wider blade. Also, if your boards are all the same side why not make a jig to hold the boards at the same spot for drilling the handle rather then having to mark the spot for the hole on every board. Just some thoughts.

    • @jennieanddavis
      @jennieanddavis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1
