  • Tom Clancy, Pat Clancy, Liam Clancy, and Tommy Makem were three brothers and a close friend who left their native Ireland in the mid-'50s and came to the United States. All four had some experience in the theater in Ireland, and came to New York City hoping to find work as actors. However, they were also gifted musicians and strong singers, and they soon began performing traditional folk songs from Ireland in Greenwich Village nightspots. Their fame quickly spread, and the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem brought the music of Ireland to listeners all across America (and around the world), sparking a new interest in folk music in the process. The Story of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem is a documentary that looks at the remarkable career of this musical foursome, featuring interviews with the boys (and footage from a reunion show at New York's Lincoln Center), as well as thoughts from their friends and contemporaries (including Bob Dylan).

My father, Irish-Scottish decent, loved Irish pub music especially the Tommy Makem & the Clancy brothers. I love their style, and how they capture that Irish spirit. It begs a response 🍀

I was blessed to see Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy in concert several times and their concerts were amazing and magical. I got to meet and talk with them a few minutes, I found they were both nice, genuine and gracious people. The four of them have now joined the heavenly choir but luckily their music lives on.

One evening I was in the John Barleycorn on 43rd street near Third Ave. I turned around and here’s the Clancy Brother’s and Tommy Makem. They were not appearing, just bouncing around. Wound up drinking with them. It was memorable, indeed!

Those singers will be forever in our hearts❤ theirs songs were able to touch the human soul like no one else did before 😊 I'm a french student in journalism and, for me, the Clancy brothers represent all the wonderful things in Ireland, a rebelious and independent mind, a wonderful humour and a real sense of witty ❤

"When we sang a rebel song in those days it wasn't to present any political point of view except to show that there were interesting songs about what people were doing in Ireland. You know, because it was an interesting human expression...I think the folk songs always told more truth about history than the history books anyway. As somebody said, 'written history is nothing more than the propaganda of the victor'."
